I've almost 100% moved to Ars for tech news now. At least there's an article to read. I still come here to follow the comments, but it's less and less all the time.
I came here specifically to say this. It's cluttering bullshit that doesn't belong there. Might as well have linked to a story about the bus service in Brazil.
For a brief moment when Slashdot changed hands, I thought we might be on to a winner. But no, here we are suffering a fate worse than Dice. Just pure unadulterated shite on the back of promises to sort stuff out. We don't REALLY care about UTF8 that much, what we DO care about is the integrity (hah) of the news and information provided. It's what we comment on, it's what we come here for.
Unfortunately we always have to pick holes in something about every story.
I turned off Adblocking for/. in the hope I was seeing a change. Now i don't like that change I'll vote with my blocker.
This is definitely a large part of the problem. There's not a big enough noise coming from non Microsoft related news outlets to tell people how to sort it.
It's like geeks have discovered a cure for dirty diesel but instead of getting the word out, they're arguing about how terrible the engine manufacturers are.
I'd like to see some evidence of it not stopping the nagging, again I have nothing but anecdotal evidence of it being 100% effective but if someone has actual proof of it failing then I'll stop peddling my snake oil.
I've had multiple machines with those registry keys set for at least 6 months, none of them have shown any sign of a Windows 10 upgrade since.
It's tried, it's tested, it's permanent.
Guess what? It's yet another fuck up in the summary.

Yeah I've definitely heard it mentioned somewhere before...
B-b-but, I was so sure...
I'm going for a lie down, this has all been too much.
At least this time it was vaguely related inasmuch as it's involving the same companies. Otherwise, I concur.
Tacking other stories onto the end of summaries is just fucking irritating.
BeauHD, why do you keep ignoring us when we tell you to stop?
No one cares about related news, stop doing it.
"Sorry, non alphanumeric characters and spaces are not supported in passwords"
Where's the vaguely related link about the price of wheelchairs going through the roof?

Any other suggestions for decent nerd news?

You could always move, I don't think it would change the way you are though.
The last piece of hardware I had to install in a Linux box (was a media server) was a DVB-T2 TV Card.
Not only were no drivers included with Debian for it, I had to go off and grab a firmware then COMPILE my own drivers.
There's nothing to stop them.
Thanks for the clarification.
No, just the upgrade
I'm yet to experience anything like what I would expect hell to be like.
What hell am I going to go through? Educate me.

Thanks.
Whatever works for you dude, you're preaching to the wrong congregation though.
It's not the nerds that need to know, it's all the other people that don't want Windows 10.
Why not just apply 2 registry keys?
If it's as simple as "Why not..." then why is anyone still suffering this problem?
Because any mainstream news coverage this get's is 100% negative Microsoft bashing with zero advice on how to sort it out.
I'd like to see some evidence of it not stopping the nagging, again I have nothing but anecdotal evidence of it being 100% effective but if someone has actual proof of it failing then I'll stop peddling my snake oil.
Fair enough. I'll shut the fuck up now because clearly this is a solved problem. Thanks for helping.
So go tell Grandma how to do sort it out.
Alternatively just talk about grandma on the internet and how bad Windows 10 is.
Fair enough.
So if 3 technicians know the answer, why do all the 6 figure engineers struggle with it? Why aren't they telling more people about it?
I never said it did, but good point well made.
