The only reason for the long box was so that record stores could put CDs in the same bins where they used to put 12" vinyl. Since many record stores have changed to new bins, there is no reason for long box.

As for Rush and Tool, (1) they are hardly representative of "these days," considering it's been 4 years since Tool released an album and 9 years since Rush did. (2) Just because you don't like Tool and Rush doesn't mean there aren't other artists somewhere who you will like.

When buying a next-gen system, the last thing in my mind is backwards compatibility. You can play PS1 games on a PS3? Who the hell cares! I can barely stand to play the poor graphics of PS1 games on my PS2 now. Most HDTV owners think the PS2 is unplayable on big screens because of poor graphics quality. Who really cares if it'll play PS1 games? If I want to play a PS2 game, I'll put it in my PS2.

If I want to play XBox 1 games, I would buy an Xbox 1, not an XBox 2.

Well, you shouldn't use the generic term "IP". IP encompasses many different areas of law, including patents, trademarks, and copyrights.

There is a separate exam to become admitted to the Patent Bar. You can get more information at the PTO website. You do NOT have to be a lawyer to take the Patent Bar Exam. If you pass it and are not a lawyer, you are called a "patent agent." If you pass the patent bar and are a lawyer (admitted to practice law in any state or D.C.), then you are called a "patent lawyer." In order to take the patent bar exam, you must have a technical degree (engineering, science, etc.) Detailed info is linked to above.

To file a patent, unless you are the inventor, you have to be admitted to the patent bar (patent agent or patent lawyer).

There are no such restrictions on copyrights or trademarks. However, you need to be an attorney to file trademarks on behalf of another. (I don't know about copyrights).

For litigation purposes (suing other people for patent infringement), you have to be a lawyer, but you do not have to be admitted to the patent bar. You only need to be a patent lawyer to prosecute (obtain) patents.

I HATE companies that auto-renew, especially for a year-long contract. I had a lot of trouble with a home alarm company. No up-front fee, but it's an automatically renewed contract, unless you notify them 30 days in advance. If you don't notify, they will renew the contract and there is no way to get out of it. I moved out of my house 9 days after the year period began. But because I didn't notify them ahead of time. I had to pay for a whole year's worth of alarm service, even though I didn't live in the house.

Someone told me that California has a law that forbids auto-renew contract with year-long terms. If true, I wonder if it would apply to Amazon.

Building in 120GB, 160GB or higher capacity drives, for example, will mean miniature PCs able to match larger machines in storing large numbers of MP3 files or even digital photos.

Oh come on. Not many people have enough photos and MP3s to fill even 10GB nevermind 120GB or 160GB. I am still using a 10GB HD in my XP machine.

I bought a machine with a 30 GB hard drive 5 years ago. Since then, I've added (not replaced, added) a 40 GB hard drive, an 80 GB hard drive, and a 160GB hard drive. So just because YOU don't use hard drive space doesn't mean that NO ONE needs hard drive space.

Yeah, my music is stored elsewhere but it's still less than 7GB of MP3s and 10GB more for SHN/FLAC (which most people aren't into). I want to know how many regular computer userse have 100GB of music and photos. Geeks are in the minority when it comes to computer purchases from major vendors that would be hurt by this "gamble". I'm sure it won't be anything for them to worry about.

As others have said, DV takes up 13 GB per 60 minute tape. Many professional photographers (and advanced amateurs), can easily fill up a 1 GB memory card on a single, one-day shoot. Just because they aren't your definition of a "geek" doesn't mean they don't use computers.

However, the availability of firewire and USB external drives makes the lack of hard drive space in the Mini a moot question. So it's not a gamble to only include small hard drives.

You had a pretty serious qualifier, but brushed it off like it's nothing. The biggest plus of a CC is that you aren't out money if it is lost/stolen. The biggest minus of cash is you are SOL if it is lost/stolen.

Are there good reasons NOT to use a credit card? Of course:

    • It's easier to lose track of how much you spent if you use a credit card. If you take a credit card with $1000 credit line left, but you promise yourself to only use $500, it's a lot easier to shoot past your personal $500 limit than it would be if you had $500 in your wallet that had to last until your next pay check.
    • Related to the first reason, if you run out of cash, you're just out of cash and you stop spending. With a credit card, the companies will just keep increasing your limit, making it easier to get into financial straits.
If you have fiscal discipline, credit cards have it all over cash. The problem is that you can lose financial discipline without even thinking about it when you have large credit lines.

Doesn't hurt you in the slightest? Huh? If you have $100 in your wallet and it is stolen, you're out $100. Sounds like being hurt to me.

There are plenty of good reasons to use credit cards instead of cash:

    • If you return merchandise, you credit card is immediately reimbursed. No waiting for checks or dealing with store credit.
    • If your cash is stolen or lost, you're SOL. If your credit cards is stolen or lost, you call the credit card company and you're not liable past a certain amount ($50, IIRC).
    • You don't have to deal with bills that stick together or clerks that "inadvertently" give you the wrong amount of change.
    • After a day at the mall, your pockets won't be full of heavy change. With a credit card, no change.
    • Tips in restaurants can be calculated to the exact penny.
