    I was just wondering the same thing... why hasn't the standard /. elititist correction storm began. I'm pretty sure if they were an actual seed box instead of just a search engine they would have some serious legal problems.

    If anything, this law would help create jobs. It demonstrates that the Texas government will actually clarify ambiguity, which in turn provides businesses such as webhosts the ability to operate in clearly defined guidlines. This encourages businesses, it says "host your servers here, we won't screw you with an outdated tax law."

    Because they have NO other choice. It's a "stay and play with the new rules" or "get out of the game" market right now. They no longer have a unique competative advantage other than their established userbase. Setting up a blackberry app that runs within an Android environment could setup a system in which people can bring their own device, but not have to deal with complete Corporate-IT lockdown of the phone since BB runs in it's own little sandbox.

    I pirate because I'm cheap... If my solution to allow me to pirate movies costs me an additional $20 a month, then I'll just lower my tier of bandwidth and use netflix and redbox. I don't care how I get my media, just so long as it's the cheapest possible way. Currently that's fast internet w/ uTorrent using RSS feeds for my TV shows and Piratebay for my movies. I only need crazy fast internet to make my torrents go faster. If my ISP discurrages that, then I'll bump down to the minimum required for streaming. Their loss, netflixes gain.

    Problem is, Limeware isn't the infringing material, it is only a tool commonly used by infringers. CNET can argue that their only a service provider, but with the state of the US legal system it will still cost them a fortune to end this.

    If you want to get fancy with it, you can VLAN the workstations from the printer and the servers, then setup some ACLs. Thats the ONLY reason I say it's diffrent than a cable router.

    Actually, if they have a PKI setup as using smartcards may suggest, then this email account will likely be their most secure communication platform. It would only depend on how secure their private keys are. In any case, its more secure than an unencrypted mailbox that ANY law enforement agency or ISP employee can peek into like traditional email accounts.

    This whole Ask Slashdot is bullshit flamebait. Anyone who reads /. knows this request is absurd. Someone that knows enough to install and configure the listed apps knows that requesting a rouge server to have open internet access and no management it NOT going to happen.

    1) Girlfriend, I have a fiance, trust me buddy they're over priced. There like a backhoe, you're much better off just "renting" the equipment. If you know what I mean.

    2) Under arm fragrence, yes this is a natural defense mechanisim, It must work, you are still alive.

    3) Ants, If they're the cute kind that don't bite, let them be, they are the poor mans maid, they will remove all the stale food from around your desk. and for god sakes man, you should know better than to let your self run out of Mountain Dew

    First off what are they trying to get signed... I hope not the kernel... because then how am I gonna recompile it. Basicly we need a boot disk that we can pass paramaters to.

    M$ gets a per copy royalty don't they. So this couldn't be a free "download an iso and go" thing it would have to be a disk we would buy, is that going to cause GNU/GPL problems?

    As for the prize... Microsoft shouldn't get it, whom ever pays to get this thing signed should get it since they payed for it.

    Just some food for thought.

    Someone still controls the original project. Going open source just means that the software will have a broader developer base, thus more features quicker.

    These e-sales taxes don't bother me... Most venders have a toll free number you can still call your orders through. I think I can deal with talking to a phone jocky long enough to avoid a 5-7% internet sales tax. Guys.. theres always a way to win.

    Pandoras box has already been opened. All monitoring will do is have the P2P traders just encrypt the connections, thus adding more overhead. In addition the personel the Univ. is going to hire is going to be the same students that are transfering the files.

    The only way they will stop it is to get involved in the file sharing and start going after people. People have the 'I won't get caught' mentality.... actully is it even illegal yet? Since no one is charging and all.
