Not as big a deal as you'd think. Even years after being out of the US Army, i get phone calls asking about my mental well-being. They seem to take good care of their own, as if the government still feels possessive or responsible for an in-active veteran. It's terrible if a civilian goes batshit insane and kills people. If a Marine goes batshit insane it becomes an event that books are written about.

If you want to install an up-to-date system you would use the net-installer. This will download and install your OS with the very latest of everything, no post install updating is required.

If you prefer to install a six month old version then update it later, you can do that too. But net-install is far better.

Might as well hold onto your books. I've been trying to sell mine and it's a waste of time. The used-book store offers a quarter a book (about 3% of the price i paid). Online sales are better but you have to factor in packaging costs and fuel. Sounds silly that packaging costs would matter but if it costs 20cents for packaging and 60cents in fuel then that 2$ book sale only made you 1.20$ (15% of original price). If you add up all the hours you'll spend managing them and shipping them one by one.. total waste.

My suggestion is to donate them someplace that really needs them. A school, a prison, or a deployed unit in Afghanistan.
