Because the definition of overbooking is BOOKING too many passengers on a plane. Those employees weren't BOOKED, they were tossed in because someone screwed up, and the airline wasn't willing to pay up handsomely to just mitigate the issue and move on. They may lose millions for want of a few grand.

I bring this up because it seems to me a possible better approach to this nonsense is to simply state that if you miss your flight due to no fault of the airline, you will be charged the fare

Um, they already do that. For decades now, you have to pay a huge fee to have your ticket be transferable.

  5. Re:Numbers on Why Do Airlines Overbook? (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

Yeah, they're counting heads on all flights, ignoring the fact that many of those people fly several times a year. The total number of travelers is much, much lower. If 46,000 Uber/Lyft riders were kicked out of their rides, it would be the top story every day.

$1,350 is the MAX. Here's what I found:

If you are bumped involuntarily and the airline arranges substitute transportation that is scheduled to get you to your final destination (including later connections) within one hour of your original scheduled arrival time, there is no compensation.
If the airline arranges substitute transportation that is scheduled to arrive at your destination between one and two hours after your original arrival time (between one and four hours on international flights), the airline must pay you an amount equal to 200% of your one-way fare to your final destination that day, with a $675 maximum.
If the substitute transportation is scheduled to get you to your destination more than two hours later (four hours internationally), or if the airline does not make any substitute travel arrangements for you, the compensation doubles (400% of your one-way fare, $1350 maximum).
If your ticket does not show a fare (for example, a frequent-flyer award ticket or a ticket issued by a consolidator), your denied boarding compensation is based on the lowest cash, check or credit card payment charged for a ticket in the same class of service (e.g., coach, first class) on that flight.

  7. They must have been hoping to catch someone retired so long that his last job paid less than that.

"Hey Gladys! Someone wants to pay me $30K a year! WE'RE RICH!"
"Edgar, we get more than that from social security. Did you forget to take your meds this morning?"

I would take $30K/year if it was for a 16 hour work week. Or maybe they meant $30/hr. That would still be a little low on the coasts, but decent in flyover country.

I didn't know the duck's name was Ben. But if AFLAC reconciled with Gilbert Gottfried and got him to do the voice, I would be waiting in line to see that one as well.

Oh, are we going to have the government step in, because you're too stupid to keep a reasonable work/life balance and negotiate fair compensation? Ultimately, you're going to want to progress from the tier of self-employment to owning your own business, because in the long term owning your own job means having no paid vacation or sick days. But self-employment is often the next step on getting out of the employment scam. You know the one: the claim that if you can just get a college degree, you'll get a safe, secure job and work until your comfortable retirement.
