Open does not mean free. They could have banned all competitors' clients from entering the network, instead they are letting them in for a fee. So, as a matter of fact, by giving other companies formal access to the messenger network, Microsoft are making it MORE open, not LESS.
I wouldn't be surprised if AOL followed with a similar move, actually...
Fair point. Mind you, European politicians are still very mindful of Europe-wide protests since they are a relatively new trend and, since they get a lot of coverage over here they appear in the news a lot. However, unless a "big" site decides to close for the day, this will pass off as a joke.
How the fuck is this offtopic then? If Mikey is content to force upon everyone his trivial problems of installing an ADSL line on every post posted on the front page in the past hour, why the hell not comment it?
You are very correct about the multiple desktop thingy. It is one of the things I love in Linux desktops. I cannot understand why the hell they don't install it as standard...
Look mate, it's easy. Put the cd in. Choose upgrade. Wait. You have XP. I mean, pardon my total exaltation but if you have a licence for XP and you are using 98 you are subjecting yourself to a torture. Unless you are trolling, of course, in which case I salute you.
Pardon me, but if you couldn't be arsed to click through a couple of control panel windows to put Windows back as you like it and instead of heeding the advice of the tens of slashdot users who are pointing you to how to change XP to how you like it you continue to bitch about what a pain it is to find your way around one of the arguably most user friendly out there, might I ask what the hell you are doing reading slashdot? Are you here for the girls? 'Cause there aren't any.
Install printer: Connect printer, wait, print. You might need to install drivers, in which case insert cd when prompted.
Alter network settings: Control pannel, Networking, Right click, Properties, Click on TCP/IP, adjust values.
This works on EVERY Windows machine. The control panel has not changed that much. The cosmetic change that happened in XP is easily overcome. So, your first words over the phone would be "open control panel, click "show classic view"...
What the hell are you talking about? Display Properties / Desktop / Themes. Change to classic. Instant Windows 98 interface! If you went back to Windows 98 because of this you really should invest a couple of minutes to learn your operating system.
Windows has changed aspect exactly once, when Windows 95 was introduced. Even then things did not break - you could stil close a window by double-clicking on its icon on the top left of its window. Almost ten years later you can STILL close windows like that. The changes made in XP are purely cosmetic, a bit more color here, a bit of a curve there - that's all. I have not met one person who looks at an XP desktop after using Windows for years and gets lost. Ever.
Gnome and KDE on the other hand is another story altogether.
In every global company there is this thing called EMEA (European and Middle Eastern Area). It has become global practice in multinationals to count EMEA earnings, as opposed to European, EU, Middle Eastern etc. It has nothing to do with geography and everything to do with management practices. In short, the middle east is too small a market (monetarily speaking) to warrant its structural independence and whoever gets to manage Europe manages the Middle East as well. I have actually never met someone who worked for a multinational in such a capacity who was a European area manager as opposed to EMEA. Sony, of course, might be an exception but I somehow doubt it.
No way interfere with their cashflow? Bollocks. Everyone knows, even though slashdot people are blind to the truth that the freecraft project allowed everyone who did not have a valid serial number to play online outside battle.net. That is the fact. Now if you want to make a huge crusade out of it, fine, but the bottom line is that it WAS hurting the cashflow, whether you accept it or not. I know this kind of reasonable thinking is hugely unpopular in slashdot but I guess you can't please anyone...
The problem, I think, is exactly that there are plenty of good controllers in the market and not one "standard". How many buttons does a "standard" joypad have on the PC? Hell, how many analog sticks, if any?
Direct X has standardised the drivers, so you can plug a joypad and play but there is no guarantee that the developers of the game took the time to see that the game would be enjoyable using the controller of your choice. I can especially see why fighting games would be a greater problem than most other game types.
...but wasn't there anothere source than "Radio Free Europe"? It is laughable that whenever slashdot posts a nyt article the "privacy freedom fighters" that plague this site don't tire to say what has already been said a thousand times, but when slashdot posts a link to a CIA funded news source originally projected as a psy-op all is good.
And you are the proud parent of how many children?
Fact is that violence affect children not because of games or TV shows or movies but rather because it has become acceptable as a means of resolving problems. I don't think that slashing monsters or stealing cars in a computer games makes me a more violent person. I think that the fact that all media glorifying such behaviour makes violence the problem that it is.
I am a proud parent of one and I can tell you that TV has its uses, as well as video games do. Don't live under the illusion that "proper" parenting can avert all dangers of violence / bad behaviour. As your offspring grows up, your influence diminishes. If that was not the case with you, consider yourself a part of a very fortunate minority.
Also, did your toilet not have a lock? Most unfortunate...
Well, he might not answer, but I will. Bush is hated outside the US by most people because he has shat upon the UN, US's allies and basic international agreements so he can get his way with "Shaddam". He is hated because, quite frankly he is slow witted and obviously inept at conveying complex thoughts (assuming he has any). He is hated because he, along with apparently many other Americans, he likes talking about "freedom" and "democracy" while trampling on these ideals with his every act. He is hated because he is the embodiment of modern fascism (in the dictionary sense of the word) and because, frankly, it is because of him that all the feelings of solidarity after September 11th that almost everyone in the world felt about what fell upon your country disappeared. He is hated because he has created an air of suspicion in the whole world, destabilising the process of peace as well as the extremely volatile Middle East area by lying about Saddam Houssein's offensive capability.
These are some of the reasons I hate your idiot president, hope it's rational enough for you - although, to be frank, with a sig such as the one you're sporting I'm sincerely doubting whether I should have bothered.
This is NOTHING like what MS are saying. What they are saying is that the future products that ATI are designing are closer to what Microsoft want the next Xbox to be. Note the use of the world "technical" there, that's what they are talking about. True, one of the factors for choosing ATI must have been, without a doubt, financial but this is not what the article is about.
How is Star Fox Adventures a travesty? OK, fair enough, it is not the embodiment of gaming perfection but it was an enjoyable game. Not very original, but it copied Zelda admirably. I don't really think it is fair for Star Fox Adventures to be put in the same league as, say, Daikatana.
Bollocks. You are probably too young to remember when winmodems came out, more or less when the Pentium did, but they were CHEAP! We don't mean cents cheap but 50% cheaper than everything out there. And they were pretty reliable, I don't ever remember a connection falling because of drivers or bad modem behaviour. Sure, when they came out they ate about 5-10% of processor power, but when the PII came out there was no reason for these old modems and expensive modems.
Oh, and what kind of "standards" does a WHQL signed driver violate exactly? I mean, I'm all for bitching for winmodems, have been hearing it since '96 or so but EVERYONE has known even since that time that if you want your modem to work with Linux, you don't buy a Winmodem. So, the question remains, why are you bitching about "junk" not working with Linux? Buy a proper modem (spending twice the money, nowadays) and get over it.
OT, I know, but even though it has been some years since I last read the Illuminatus books, the memory of reading the part refering to the civilisation of Atlantis is the book is vivid as ever. It is one of the few times a book has managed to amaze me so...
Deus Ex, on the other hand had, indeed, a mediocre story. I guess it is to be expected, after all there are people out there thinking the Solid Snake games have a good story. Sigh...
Pity the idiot moderators did not appreciate your humour... Excellent nick, as well!
Ever heard of Tolls? You know, as in paying to use a public road?
I wouldn't be surprised if AOL followed with a similar move, actually...

What a pathetic little turd.

And what is wrong with the Illuminatus trilogy exactly?
True enough, but the certification in question is intended for servers, not workstations / clients.
