XP is a desktop OS, and hardly needs security certification of that level. Windows 2003 server just came out a few months ago. Give it time. I bet the Linux configuration that was certified was not exactly 2.5 kernel material running debian unstable.
I mean, look at all the other level 4 assurance level OSs
here . Of course, Windows 2k has had this certification since last year AND Microsoft has prepared a nice guide for ensuring compliance to the common criteria guides for the Windows Sysadmin. I'm very glad that Linux will be able to compete with Windows on a bureaucratic level as well as on technical merit, but perhaps there is a slight overreacction from the part of the/. editors?
I happen to speak 4 languages, and no, English is not my mother tongue. Working in a company that makes money translating, marketing and distributing foreign books gives me an insight into the mess that these people are creating. And, have no doubt, the local publishing houses WILL, at the request of the copyright holder go to every length imaginable to get the people responsible for this mess or they will lose the right to publishing the books. Can't read English properly? Wait a few months for the translation!
Could jamie please explain why this is censorship? What the hell gives you the right to translate a book (for which the local editor has paid a pretty high price) and distributing it without caring for royalties and profit loss for all parties involved? Is anyone by any chance prohibiting these fine Czech and German people from buying the book in English and reading it at their leisure? Or has the state censored the book to remove parts of the it?
Write your own book, make it freeware and be happy. Harry Potter is not freeware, it is protected by copyright laws and international contracts for localisation / translation. It is, in the least, stupid, to be advocating what is, indeed, piracy.
Let me assure you, lots of banks STILL use OS/2 and they will do so for the foreseable future. The fact that you don't use os/2 does not mean it is dead. It is as dead as Fortran and Cobol.
I think everyone who so far has responded to my message has missed my point completely. I was not advocating the use of pirate software, I was merely pointing out the wide availability of such software for people who are obviously too cheap to buy them. Also, for people who think AVG is great, well, I suggest you download a trial of McAfee and see how many viruses you already have. I used to swear by AVG until I decided to follow the advice of a friend who is in the know and install McAfee. I apparently had 10 infected files (don't remember the virus...).
I mean, buy an antivirus, how bad can it be. Download it off kazaa, for fuck's sake! Blaming Windows and Microsoft for viruses is stupid, if you have to blame someone blame stupid users without current antiviruses. Or, here's a novel idea: blame the people who write the viruses! I know, makes the mind explode...
I do mean hibernation. When in standby, your computer is still functioning, it is not off. You have suspended a lot of its functions but you can, for example, still hear the whir of the fans, which means that the processor is still working. Standby is ok but hibernation is a lot superior - and fast. The 5 secs figure was for my second machine with 256 Mb RAM. My main PC with 1.5Gb boots in 11 secs (just timed it for you). I think it is pretty acceptable... Not exactly "instant" but I think it strikes a pretty good balance. It does, however, take quite longer to write the RAM to disk, about a minute...
A CEO talks about a non-existant game, making exorbitant claims with absolutely nothing to back them up, no beta, hell, no alpha even, not even preliminary designs and we are told that this is the big hit that will make XBox users ecstatic. When they actually have something that people can play, please let us know, until then this is not news, it is CEO drivel.
The feature you are talking about exists in Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It is called hybernating and works marvelously. I don't know what the state of affairs is in Linuxland but last time I checked there was no such feature.
I have mapped the on off button on the case of my pc to the hybernate function for the few times I turn it off to minimise the noise in the office. It takes about 5 secs from pressing the button to turn it on to a perfectly functioning Windows desktop, fully loaded. Most of the 5 seconds are BIOS checking and checking for CD-ROMs to boot from... Not bad at all...
I usually don't give a fuck about the ocasional spelling error but TWO errors on one submission? There is "original" and there is "apparently". I mean, I would think that the EDITOR would at least run the text to be published through a spellcheck but that's illogical I guess for a publication that is purely supported by advertising and is not begging everyone to contribute - oh wait...
For what's worth, the kernel patch is totally transparent and does not involve recompiling. What basically happen is Win4Lin downloads a Win4Lin enabled version of the kernel you are using (depending on your distribution) and installs that one. You still have the option of booting your old kernel in lilo, even. Very well done, very impressive...
I see the psp as the next generation of minidisc, a technology that, unfortunately, few people are aware of. I have been a minidisc user for years and I believe that with the netmd sony got it right. Excellent sound quality (compared with mp3s, at least), lightweight, and acceptable drm. The psp will be the minidisc of the video age. It will have music, video and games, all in a convenient package. I don't understand why the editors of/. (simoniker might be the only exception) and most other "online journalists" fail to see both the psp and the psx for what they are: multi-faceted hardware that does well in a variety of tasks. I don't care about the gaming capabilities of the psp myself, but I can't wait to have an acceptably good, truly portable format for movies. And do not doubt that Sony will permit recording of movies on those disks - maybe non-css encoded only (home movies, for example), but it is trivial to de-css a movie and mount the iso as a virtual disk in all modern OSs.
The only thing I think is stupid is the region encoding. That rules out sales of movies at airports for long flights, but I guess that a way will be found to overcome this limitation.
I'm using the "2.4GHz" label to distinguish them from older technology, IR based wireless. Please read reviews of said wireless controllers, you will see they were tested quite thoroughly by people who were expecting them to be quite crap (like you seem to do, for example). I do accept that YMMV but I think that at least the Wavebird, a controller that was engineered to be functioning up to 50 ft away from the console will fill your needs. Also, please don't compare phones with controllers, it is very painful.
I have a Wavebird and a Logic3 wireless controller for my ps2. I have never ever EVER noticed any lag. No interference either with absolutely any appliance, including my wireless pc keyboard / mouse. I suggest you give it a try, having wireless controller has cleared all the clutter from my living room. You are actually the first person I have ever heard making complaints about latency. Have you even tried out a modern 2.4GHz wireless controller?
I bought it the day it came out. I played it for about 10 hours TRYING to get excited about the game and find a purpose. I read articles, "how-to"s and various tips in forums. At the end I realised that I spent most of my time trying to get to a battle where, after a couple of minutes, I would get killed. Frustrating, to say the least. I cancelled my subscription and I really don't think Sony can fix this mess up, no matter how many updates they put out. Truly a waste of good money.
Council of Europe is NOT a "quasi-governmental" entity. Indeed, it is an intergovernmental one and is the closest thing there is to a central, federal, European government. Calling it "quasi-governmental" is a gross inaccuracy. More info here
Totally true. Especially the second MGS. Utter and complete shit. The story was not only horrible, it was intrusive and, I swear, at times I thought that the writer just wanted to see how far he could take the bullshiting until players gave up. I almost did and, frankly, after having played through the final battle and seeing the HORRIBLE fmvs that came before it I regretted having bought the game. While the first one was truly an excellent game, the second was too shallow, too patronising and had a shitty, shitty story. You also did not get to control Snake in the second part, I mean whoever took that decision deserves not to work in games ever, EVER again. Maybe they were banking on surprise there, I don't know, but it was a disappointment...
Can't wait to get the Gamecube version of the first one though!
There are millions of people who have lost weight and actually LOWERED their chollesterol levels and blood pressure because of that diet. I am one of them. I had been trying to lose weight for years, tried almost everything there is out there and, indeed, Atkins seemed a bit over the top. I mean, a fat-based diet that makes you lose weight?
You can throw all the analysis articles you find on the web on why Atkins does not work. They are mostly written by hapless individuals who cannot accept the main fact: done properly, Atkins not only works, it is the only diet that provides you with the know-how to keep the weight down. The lipolysis stage, which most such analysis seem to be obsessed upon is but the first stage of the diet and is there to switch your metabolism.
I, in fact, have more than a stupid article to base my belief that Atkins works. I have done it under proper medical supervision. I have lost 40 lbs, gained muscle mass and lowered my cholesterol levels and blood pressure. I have not eaten a slice of bread for 4 months now and I don't feel the need for it. I advise Atkins to everyone who has a weight problem and no preconceptions.
The only thing I found annoying about Atkins is the whole "motivation" angle and the super-annoying promotional web site but I guess some people might appreciate it...

Yes, if by "slower" you mean "faster". RTFA.
The bible and all accepted translations thereof are in the public domain and have been so for thousands of years. But yes, I agree with the rest.

You are obviously confusing "normal" md recording to lp, minidiscs don't record lossless.

Your troll is too late. Move on please.
Can't wait to get the Gamecube version of the first one though!
amazon.com has a running promotion of no s&p if you order more than (I think) 30$. That's 3 cds...
Ever heard of buying online?
