As a Londoner I'm pretty sure there was no gun involved. This guy was the victim of the classic 'banana in the small of the back' scam as portrayed in so many movies. It can be scary if the guy looks mad enough. Happened to me once, 5 years ago and I never saw the gun - just a 6'4 crackhead. In the end I just walked away with half of me just waiting to be shot in the back. It didn't happen fortunately.

As someone else said, if you've got a real gun in London you're not jacking iPods with it - you're doing something a little larger in scope. However, I'm not sure that this isn't changing with some younger people - gun crime is certainly increasing.

What a shame the UK disarmed their citizenry

Point 1: We were never armed to start with - this is largely an American idea "the right to bear arms" and is not seen in other parts of the world as a good thing.

Point 2: Technically we are subjects not citizens. (We have a monarch as head of state not a president)

No, evolution does not work that fast. What you're seeing is an image-obssessed society spending and working more on their appearance. I tend to share your opinion - people today are better looking - but it's mainly presentation. But also good lookingness (to get a bit Blue Steel here) is closely tied to evolutionary fitness (healthy=attractive) so perhaps people are generally healthier. Evolution would only have an effect if the least good-looking were not able to breed because of it. Although this may be the case for a small number of men (insert slashdot joke here) I don't think it's going to be evolutionarily significant.

On a similar topic, have you ever noticed people from 50 years ago looked different to people now. I used to think that was due to presentation (ie, fashion, hairstyles, grooming etc) but now I think it's down to dietary differences and developmental factors. People in the UK, increasingly look younger than they used to too due, I suspect, to better living and working conditions.

Yes, I agree with you. I have noticed this myself a fair bit recently. The troll/flame system ends up being another label for 'thoughtcrime' and it really isn't fair or egalitarian a lot of the time. Especially happens with the political arguments and discussions like this which have serious political overtones.

However, I don't think it makes the system biased or broken - it is reflecting what seems to be out there in 'meatspace' from my experience. I try to use my mod points to right wrongs if I can.

I hate it when people go on about their new phones as if it was important and the like. The web still fascinates me - but only because of the human communication side - the technology side I don't find so interesting. It's funny because we now are in the promised land that I used to dream of, fascinated by every step along the way, and somehow I don't really care.
