I hate this Western arrogance and ignorance, treating Africa like one giant homogenous mess.
The charity-organisation are to blame for that. They've been presenting Africa as a giant homogenous mess instead of the diverse continent it is.

I agree that handheld should have "instant-on", but IMO the games don't have to be that simple (as in 1985 arcade games) as long as you can at least save at any time, or better, put it in stand-by without losing anything (My laptop with a modern OS and numerous applications can do it, why should it not be possible for the simple OS and single application running on a handheld?).

I don't think the minute it takes to boot really matters. I've been using a laptop on the bus for the last few months and IMO the bit of time it takes to start isn't really that terrible.

I haven't heard of any ...-killer for anti-theft stickers and things in the news so far, these have exactly the same vulnerability.

I agree. I don't understand what Linus' issue with specs is. Anyone can decide how detailed his specs have to be, nobody says you have to write out every aspect of your project down to the smallest detail. IMO at least document your interfaces (on every level that you could expect someone to (re)use your code or software), the implementation is your own problem, but the interfaces are the problem of everyone who has to work with your code afterwards. You just can't rely on reading the code as only documented interfaces can be seen as somewhat static (and even that depends on how well the writer understands what exactly he's building).

Better get them to farm there own food so an increase in population will also lead to an increase in food production, otherwise you just create more hungry people.
Besides even if every one in the world has 3 meals a day, there will still be sufficent people to hate you simply because you have a TV/car/whatever and they don't.

  20. Re:You do not need a hard coded ID for the clicker on Building an Open Source "Clicker"? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Why make it so hard? Give each clicker a unique ID, store them in a box, let each student take one at the beginning of the class and return them at the end. No way to know who had which clicker and secondly you can keep an eye on those clickers and prevent them from disappearing.

The ID is necessary, how are you otherwise going to prevent a student from voting multiple times (intended or not)? Normal RCs toggle a particlar bit in the code they send each time the button is pressed. This way a receiver can know if you pressed the button again or are still holding the button down. But a receiver can't distinguish between differend RCs.

If the ID is noted on the clicker in a human-readable format, the ID can be matched with a student at the beginning of the lecture if the teacher intents to hold a test.

This way provides more options than generating random IDs and posses less problems as well (how to make sure the IDs are unique and anonymous?).
IMO it's possible to do even with a standard IR-DA port. A classic IR-DA port supports up to 4Mb/s or 500KB/s. Let each clicker send out its byte at this rate, then wait a relative long time and resend. Timing can be random. With a bit experimentation such a system can run reliable.

Using paper is fun you know. I've been to theme weekends where we used paper to write letters. Just like in the middle ages, before the internet you know. Pretty intresting thing you know, there were strict rules on how to write, each word had only one spelling and different kinds of words had to be placed in a specific order. They called it "grammar" or something. And the really weird thing is that you had to use special symbols at specific places in your sentences. Punctuation as they were called.
