It can't be illegial, it's just a cover of a song, thats done all the time. As long as the author is the artist of the song, it's leagal. Although I still prefer the origional, it just sounds better:-)
In even more real terms what is the impact of the mac mini, aside from the fact that at the moment there is no way of building a PC with same performance and price. It would seem that this could cut into the iMac and eMac market share too. Sure it's not a G5 with a superdrive and the beset graphics card.
BUT.....
It could be portable enough to replace a laptop, at a fraction of the cost. (it's portable enough). Since consider how most people now use laptops. They will have KB / Mouse / Screen at home and office, all they are really transporting is their work environment.
It can be rolled over (upgraded to newer model) with no heartache (again more so than a ibook or Powerbook.
It has a sweet spot on price, so it would be more attractive to people who don't need all the power of a G5, or the screen / kb / mouse.
I think it will go a long way on people who like me have the older PowerMac G4's and B&W G3's, so we already have USB periferials and a screen.
I also very much doubt that it will fall into the same problems the cube had of being an expensive non upgradeable unit. This is a cheap and powerful unit which allows people to set it up as they like, with things they already have.
Anyway, just my 2 cents. Personally I like it, but I don't think i will be getting one for a while yet.
Why would I waste my time playing with Avalon when running my Mac I can use Aqua now, or try and get my hands on Looking glass from Sun. One of which is current real world kickass and the other is a research project by sun. 3d desktops are going to be more interresting than the next MS fad.
Solaris and Linux are used for servers yes, but Linux has much more applications than just the server market, it's also used as a pretty sweet desktop OS. I highly doubt that Solaris has the embedded support that Linux has. This sounds so much like when people said that OSX would take over linux and solaris. Also I am not sure how many people have tried to install Solaris but..... ouch it does not have the greatest driver support at the moment as opposed to linux. But also if Sun really wants to kill linux then they will need to be not only open source but maybe it would take GNU to knock Linux of it's position.
With comments like this sun is going after the management types who are not even sure what linux is but are worried that this sun thing might take it over. But then I guess only time will tell:-) .
As if it is not already easy enought to erase all the contents of your hard disk i am not going to intrust all that information to a computer & a company that i will never see and don't even know. Can anyone say BIG BROTHER.
What will become of 2nd hand computer sales the world over if every time I run a machine with a Pheonix BIOS I can run the risk of destroying my hard disk. What sort of authentication does it take to set a machine to be erased? I could do my friend a favor and remove windows without even telling him. Sounds like someone has been talking to Microsoft.
This has got an expensive "just because i can" and useless coolness factor to it like, renting a suite in a nice hotel, getting a buggy when playing golf or using a Palm handheld
I must say that is is a shame that the appleseeding programs all have to stopped like this. It is a great program allowing the people who use the software to make input on how it runs. But perhaps they could have run 2 bata. One for stable and the other for unstable. But alas it looks like this will never come to pass.
I don't think that i am better than anyone, such a complex is what leads to mass confrontation. On/. i am sure that you will find people which scores much higher than mine. As far as I am concerned everything on the internet is a level playing field.;-)

That is a real worry, connectix was has already implemented the start dock icon, but MS could compleately shut out other os's in which case we would be relegated to using software such as box or other open source programs to emulate the x86
If you don't agree with the OSX being unix'ism then you can just as easy RUN unix on your mac, I am extremenly happy with my dual boot system. But if you still want to run unix will virtual pc is not only a windows emulator and you can just as easialy install linux.
There are alternatives to OS X, you can run Linux (Debian,Yellow Dog, ect..) or BSD in almost all varients. As for the hardware As for hardware there are alternatives to getting a G4 form apple such as TerraSoft which can be built and configured to run any linux / BSD or apple's Mac OS X (stories have been on slashdot not too long ago). The main reason that people buy apple hardware is due to the superior quality, design and performance. As for it being a cartel, apple needs to advertise to compete with popular ideas of a macintosh and the current 95% of advertising out there. So I don't think that you are forced to run OS X or buy their hardware. It is a conscience decision made by well informed people for what ever reason. Or are we all suffering from some form of mass delusion ?
So this is like Steve coming out of the closet? I think the main reason that apple is in attendance is to say, "..hey were not Microsoft..." and frankly OS X does work pretty darn good with linux. But Steve has been pushing Unix in general since NeXT. So he really came out ages ago(on unix that is). But also look at apples recent release of X11 for OSX, they are really trying to push unix in general and if they can attract some Linux people to the platform all the better.
We have already seen with Apple that a company can sell an operating system on top of a open source base, but is it really worth it. Apple's has imposed many restriction on it's Darwin projects which have kept many in the free software community out of joining the project. The beauty of OS X is that it brings Unix to the masses and does have a solid foundation. But at what cost would this be implemented through Microsoft, their sole reason for such a move would be to convince people to stop using other implementations of Linux. What would be the advantage in having Linux running as a base for Windows, just the same as BSD/Darwin is the base for Aqua. Unless companies fully agree to the open source mind set there is little to no point. Running X11 on top of Darwin can be done yet people still opt for the Linux alternative despite the fact that a lot of open source app's will run on X11/Darwin machines it's still not the same. Also Microsoft is more than likely aware that selling a windowing system in it's self would not work and what possible reason would they have to give up such a revenue generator as Windows which allows them to fight in other market spaces. They have already used windows to support the destruction of Netscape and now it is more than likely funding the push into game console markets and everything else that is being slapped with a Microsoft sticker. If they were to build Windows on top of Linux they would then have to stop campaigning against it, and if they tell people to now embrace Linux, people will opt for the cheaper alternative and slowly the Windows and Office empire would fall and they would have to rely on the quality of their product and the ability to generate revenue in other key markets which they are currently driving into, which could be hard given that [I believe] many are currently running at a loss (xbox).
I have been using OSX since the public bata, and have been impressed with the system as a whole. But the only justification to paying for the hardware (which is the real reason I use Macintosh) was that some of the OS X apps came free. Of late I have been dual booting between OS X and Debian. But if apple is going to start charging for some of thse iApps, it might be time to make the full switch to Debian.
I think if apple is not careful they will see a whole new breed of 'switcher'.
It seems the main argument against making the leep for most people into open source software is compatabality. I used to be controlled by the microsoft only mantra, but found that once you make the perminent switch finding ways to work with MS compatiable software ain't that hard. The point was put to me when i was starting out saying "...but where this and that....". How long have you been using windows ? Now imagaine that you spent even half that time learning Linux you would be able to pick it up. After an insperational talk with this person I compleately switched and have not been back since. Learning all the new tools is hard and it requires a differant mind set but IMHO it is worth it. Just quit it cold turky.
Then i stand corrected :-)
