I just called and thought peo[ple might like to know that the Tampa Florida area is also currently being brought online. There are 3 large areas of the city currently live with the eastern suburbs (Brandon, Seffner, Riverview) being brought online in the coming months. I was told the delay was not technical but the fact that they need to train new techs to install and maintain the service. The eastern suburbs should have access starting in December.
Maybe the copies are another form of control... Give us a grainy low res version to excite us and then grab the $8 admission to the movie.... The matrix has us!
Dont worry about what he says. This is the guy that has been trying to replace PC's with Dummy terminals (well maybe smart terminals). The software industry may get worse because of outsourcing to 3rd world countries where the labor costs are lower but it will not just die.
I think you should reward the people that have high karma by droping the rates, say someone with above a 30 gets $1 off the $5 rate, 40+ gets $2 and if you are maxed out at 50 you should have it for $3 off. That way you can reward the people that really use your site and are not just trolls.
The test was a lot easier than the SAIR cert tests of the same level(Install and Config and Sys. Admin) but there were a lot more hardware specific questions (SCSi, LVD, RAID, Fibre Channel, Hard Disks, Video Cards, etc). I guess that is from there A+ people, maybe. I have not yuet recieved my results from the Beta exam but I am 99% sure I passed it. It is nice to see that a major certification company like CompTia has a linux certification for people to get. I have the SAIR cert but I thik this one will help a little more when I leave the military and go looking for a Linux (or Unix) sysadmin job.
Just think about it. Linux has the potential to take the market theat Solaris, AIX and HPUX have had for years. If Intel and AMD can get Linux apps to perform as well or better than the properitary OS's then they stand to make money because it will be there hardware in the boxes, not Sun HP or IBM. It would just seem to make sence to do what they are doing.

I am living in Germnay right now with the US Air Force and SuSE is very big here. Just about every computer store and almost all department store computer sections sell SuSE Pro. or Personal. I use suse on my desktop and the DVD install of Pro. is great. I wish other distros would do the same. SuSE has a very polished YaST online update that works excellent and the distro is very good. It would be a shame if this distro went belly up.
IBM should make a list of items that i thinks Linux would need to improve in order to be as good as AIX, in there opinion. They could then open up some of the managment tools or port the tools over (not so easy, but I am sure it could be done). Any kernel work could be identified and would be completed in short order (those kernel hackers seem to LOVE a challenge). That way clear objectives could be established and work could begin.

No matter if it is a DOS attack or a worm or any other kind of attack. No matter what OS you are supporting and using if you as an Admin dont have the proper service packs and updates installed then your OS will be a victim sooner or later. Having competinent people running the shop is where it is all at. If you look at the latest worms, Red Hat's and MS's, they could BOTH be avoided by updating software.

a way to beat anything that is thrown at it. I dont know if we will be able to ever beat them by using the legal system. They have to many lawyers searching for ways to stall things so that by the time they do get into court, the item is already obsolete. Look at the whole Netscape IE thing. By the time the court ruled they were a monopoly Netscape had shrunk to about 15% market share. And now the appeal has gone there way (somewhat) and the next judgement will not be heard for years. The legal system is to slow. We will beat them by making a better product. They seem to find ways to shoot themselvs in the foot, look at all of the bugs in IIS. I think the legal system is a waste when it comes to microsoft. XP will ship on time, I would bet on it. But we will have a better desktop OS in about a year or two (would be sooner if KDE and GNOME could work things out) and we already have a better, more stable server OS.
I have been a slack user for about 3 years and I am VERY happy that Partick and comapny kept the project going. Slackare is a great choice for a server distro. I think that a bit to much was included in the 8.0 distro but it is an excellent project and I hope it continues for a LONG time!

It is good to see something with Slack installed by default coming off of the profuction lines. I think Slackware is one of the best (toss up between slack and debian) server distros out there. Slack does not get enough attention with Red Hat and Mandrake and Suse targeting newbies. I think it is great to see slack pre-installed. If they only had an option for Debian... Then we would have the 2 best server OS distros avalible.

I dont see why anyone would need he source to Solaris. It cost $75 to look at it and you couldnt do much with it anyway. I guess for a learning experienceit would be o but you have the BSD's and Linux to look at (and also Minix) if you wanted to learn something. I suppose a company developing apps for Solaris could use it to find out some better design techniques for there apps to work with Solaris but to license it and then have to pay to access it, I am not suprised it was not a big sucess. Why pay for something that you can EASILY get for free from the alternative Unix's?
I am not sure if this will actualy help anything. Open Source fanatics will never come to terms with the corporate software environment and the corporat software people will never come to terms with giving away there "property" for free. Some companies that can afford to open up some software to gain a new market for there hardware will come around and see the light of open source software but I dont see companies like Microsoft ever coming around. It is very good to discuss the differences but I dont think much will come out of it.

It is kinda funny that CompTIA would have any problem with Open Source software since they have a Linux+ certification.

The RHCE by Red Hat and the CCIE by Cisco are both lab based exams where you have to do actual hands on work to earn the certification.
