I think the blackstone code was a port of Sun's code, under a license that gave Sun the rights to the code. So this should be legal, although still not right. I can't get through to the article, so I can't be sure of this.

The playstation 2 is generating a lot of interest because it is new, not necesarrily because it will kill pc gaming. I think they will both survive, most pc gamers I know also use a playstation/dreamcast/n64/whatever

I realize I can get the binaries after christmas, but where am I until then. I may be in the minority and have a misconfigured system, but I get 3 frames a second @ 320 x 200, 16 bit color(as reported by cg_drawfps) on a P3 450 with 256 meg RAM and a TNT 2 Using the GLX module for TNT 2s, slightly faster results were obtained when using the XFree 3.9 snapshot (5fps). This aint gonna hold me over for a month. Maybe if I thought I'd be able to get a friends copy of the Windows version to use till I could dl the binaries I'd think differently, but that is unlikely for me. I'd like to support Linux, but I also want Quake.

I for one will probably not wait, why? Because the Linux version will not work for me. I've been unable to get my video card to run the demo at a reasonable speed, so I will use it under Windows where I can get damn good speed at 1024x768. I could buy the linux version when it finally makes it to store shelves, only to have to wait another month or so to be able to play it under windows. Now if someone finds a way to make my TNT 2 perform like it does under Windows before the I buy quake 3 I may change my mind

I'm no lawyer or GPL expert, but I remember reading that driver modules do not have to be GPL, I think it falls under the exemption that Linux added to the license for the kernel. They could probably write an essential module that the system can't, maybe the display and input drivers, properly work without, and make it proprietary. But you would be free to use the kernel till hell freezes over. That would definitly violate the spirit of the law, but might be within the letter of the law. Just IMHO

USB support, dvd, scsi, 3d accelerators. Yep pretty ancient. Seriously, Linux was written in 1991, and has been regularly updated ever since. I wonder how much original code is still in the kernel. I also disagree that MS operating systems are dated. For a desktop system NT, and what i've used of 2000, is a pretty decent platform. Even under moderate usage it is fairly stable. It's good enough for most people. As for the PDP11 environement, well if it works why change it. I;ve got plenty of GUI tools that work with the text configuration files. Works fine.

We have the right to view the disks that we have paid a licensing fee on, using the drives we have purchased, and decode with the cards we have bought. Network card companies have been shipping drivers for a dozen os's for many years now. Now I admit network cards are used on linux more often than DVD decoders and drives would be if the software is available, but it shows that it can be worth the money to make hardware usable on different platforms.
