I cannot dispute that this guy is a complete asshole and should certainly be punished in someway. Deported at a minimum. Not so sure about prison though. I have a hard time believing he envisioned the room mate killing himself. Either way, he gets to live with that.

For me, the real question is fundamental. Why, in the modern "free" world does being outed as a homosexual cause one to prefer suicide rather than live with the shame?
As a society, would it not be better to address such a fundamental social problem than to simply treat the symptoms?

I do not think that anyone is saying that big pharma has a cure already and that they hold it back to make more money. I am reasonable sure they don’t have a cure.
I am also reasonably sure they would not make much profit on a cure. After all, you can only cure someone once.

I sat next to a very interesting woman who was responcible for certifications at one of the big pharma companies. Until that day, I had always imagined it was expensive to bring a drug to market, but I never imagined to could be getting close to 1 billion by the time the trials were finally over.
A cure is no cheaper to produce than a treatment.
Think about some of the rare diseases. Lets say only 100k people in the world have it. If big pharma invented a drug to cure it, but it cost them 500 million to develop and approve it, how could they sell it? It would be 5000 bucks a bill just to break even.
If you could “manage” the disease however, where you need to take pills for years, you could sell the pills for much less money and still make tons more in the long run.
Of course, there are loads of people with cancer so you would still make a lot of money. Just imagine how much more you make though when the patients, all however many hundred million of them needs pills for a few years to manage it.

Perhaps, you say, a small company could put this on the market. I say, no chance. Not for lack of want, but for lack of money.
The way that the FDA is setup, it costs hundreds of millions to bring a new medication onto the market. No small company could foot the bill.

Perhaps someone else knows of a way for a small firm to do it, but I cannot think of it. Still, I hope I am wrong.

If you look at the numbers, China is currently the number one buyer of luxury goods in the world. Putting 1 million people to work as IP cops will not change it. The only thing it will do is hurt so many of the low income folks who make their living selling to people like me, who, to be honest would NEVER allow the purchase of a real 1000 dollar hand bag.
