    First of all, $250K a year doesn't get you into the 1%. You need a bit more than that. The top 1% earned an average of $717,000 per year. The lower limit for a "1 percenter" is $386,000/year.

    So, why the hell are the Dems/Obama shouting so loudly that they need to significantly raise the taxes on the folks at $250K and up? Why not start with those making over $1M a year or closer...?

    Lots of people with subchapter "S" corps in that $250K range that have much of that 'income' as business money coming to be taxed at fall through personal rates so as not to be double taxed.

    That money is most often re-invested in said company....the higher tax will harm the small businesses like this...

    I've never installed the Oracle database, but there's usually a command-line option on commercial installers, even if it's not properly documented. Try running with -help, --help, -h, etc and see if it will tell you.

    There is a rather poorly documented 'silent install' method you can use...but it isn't as feature rich as the GUi, and if I recall even reading docs from Oracle, they don't recommend you using that method.

    Not to mention...if you try usinig/installing some tools, like Oracle, which forces you to use a java GUI to install and other configs....you have to have X running.

    Command line only, is often not a valid paradigm, depending on what you want to do with Linux these days, especially if using commercial software on it.

    Or as I've said in certain occasions, some days you can work OK, but you don't want to be outside of a 15 foot radius of your own toilet. TMI, perhaps, but it happens to all of us from time to time.

    That is about the ONLY stage of sickness that will keep me home.

    Employers don't give enough paid sick time for me...and I don't want to burn my vacation time, which is MY time...so, if I can make it to work, I will.

    If working from home is not an option, then they should give sufficient sick leave...one week can get burned quickly in a year, I mean some of that is just for days you are well, but have to get physicals, eye appt, etc. Those Drs don't do business on weekends, so you burn a couple of days easily of a one week sick leave allocation, and you are left with only 3 days worth roughly.

    So, unless I'm hemorrhaging from the lungs, or explosive diarrhea, I'm coming in to work.

    Dunno if a letter will help...but, I'll sure send one...this move sucks.

    I don't think this is just a R problem...I think both R's and D's up there are so bought and paid for that no reform will likely happen that will benefit you and I, but I'll certainly send a letter about this....

    Nope, the "apps store" is a separate entity and separate application to run to install apps.

    I don't know... every time I go into a restaurant and see the prices on the menu I choke, so the food doesn't go down nearly as well as it ought to.

    Not a problem down here....most of us in LA can cook. Actually, it used to be part of the state entrance exam.

    It's the definitive Batmobile to me also. I was old enough to still enjoy the (first rounds of) re-runs, and see it in an "antique" auto museum close to the area I grew up. I remember making a point of touching it, to see if it was a real car. Ah, the good old days.

    Hell, I still have around somewhere my old (Corgi brand?) Batmobile and Batboat from what I was a kid. Cast metal, solid toys...I think the batmobile had the chain cutter that would flip out the front when you pushed a button, and little plastic rockets could fire out the back pipes behind the cockpit when you spun a little wheel on top of the car.

    I also had the old James Bond car from Goldfinger they put out..THAT was cool...had a working ejector seat, pop out front machine guns, bullet proof metal plate behind the rear windshield...and little saw blades (plastic) could be pulled out of the wheels...

    Do they still even make cool die cast metal toys like that anymore? Wonder if mine are worth anything....?

    You are correct.

    But there are WAY more law abiding citizens, should we limit their rights just because a much lower number of the population are criminals or nuts?

    I mean, we are already doing more and more to base our laws and society catering to lowest common denominator as it is....

    Trace all the connections to the radical muslim sites....track to destinations, and then send over a friendly drone for a visit....

    Problem of terrorism growing solved, and no need to censor the web/Internet at all.

    Maybe the financial benefits of playing the NFL, which can be passed to offspring, outweigh the potential downside of having a shorter life.

    But, that type of thing doesn't stand up to the new mentality of "social justice"....you can't just make a lot of $$ and give it to your kids, that's just not right, and not fair for the 99%....and....

    Oh wait, if you're a rich sports star this doesn't apply to you...only all those other filthy wealthy folks that make over $250K/yr....gotcha.

    It isn't that so much as...if you don't want them in your country, fine, but it really is none of your business if we want to continue to allow them here.

    For the most part, gun laws only affect the law abiding citizen, the one you don't have to worry about owning a gun.

    But really....if you don't live here, then its just really none of your business, right? Why are you concerned about it..?

    I always LOVED that car, and yes, I'm old enough for it to be the definitive Batmobile.

    I think if the Dems wanted to go after the "rich"..they'd raise their target to those near the $1M mark...bare minimum $500K-$750K.

    $250K is not rich...that's hitting squarely in the area of successful small businesses, usually a S corp of the like, where the income falls through on the owners personal taxes....to get the lower rate for the small business.

    If they exempt income from the business ...then, ok, I'm cool with that tax raise..I know we need a little, but what the Dems are insisting on, is hitting WAY below the belt when they're really targeting the super rich, no?

    And the Dems don't really seem to be willing to negotiate serious federal spending cuts on programs...give and take requires BOTH sides to work...

    A significant factor in US avg. lifespan is that the US has a larger black population. Blacks don't live as long as whites even when controlling for other factors. Some factors are understood such as genetic diseases like sickle cell anemia that kills off blacks much more than whites, or diabetes (which includes a genetic component). This does not explain all of the difference, neither does behavioral differences such as twinkies and crack babies.

    Not to mention...black on black violence, which often leads to death...

    Right now, in the US Rationing is happening in the form of '30+million people getting no health care. Every country with government healthcare has better health care.

    Well, Obamacare does not cover everyone...we're spending a lot of money just to add a few more % people on the covered list...

    And as far as rationing...we've had a number of people from the UK and Canada complain about just this in the past threads on /. concerning socialized medicine as provided in their respective countries....

    You do realize the deficit is going DOWN under Obama right? Funny how 'stimulus' creates revenue and all that.

    Nope, I don't see that at all...Obama keeps trying to increase spending, he's driving the deficit up higher than most previous presidents put together, in only 4 years.

    Near universal health care coverage is somehow bad?

    Not they way they did it...and the amount of new taxes involved in all of this, is going to start really hit the middle class in the next year or so...and this isn't even near "universal" coverage...there are still a ton of folks out there that will still be un-covered. If they want to cut costs, start with medicare/medicade and let them negotiate with the pharm. industry for rates on drugs like the VA does, that would cut a ton of money there alone. I don't need the feds messing in my life, and what is more personal that my medical coverage and tx? I think we're gonna see more and more bad that comes out of Obama care. It could have and should have been done MUCH differently.

    Ending of Don't Ask Don't Tell?

    Didn't care before, don't care now...don't see how this is really a positive for the military, and from those I know in it..they don't seem it as a net positive.

    Bin Laden is dead

    Good job...but any president would have given the "go ahead"...and this hunt was started long before Obama got into office. Not really that big a trophy for him IMHO. Glad he did it..good job, but not the biggest trophy, he certainly had little personally to do with it overall.

    Wall Street Reform

    Needed, but I'm not fully sure what good and bad was done here. Oversight needed, sure, but don't need to shackle with restraints that don't actually address the problems that caused the meltdown.

    Iraq war ended

    I'll be believe that when all our troops are out of there..I think it is ended in 'name only' at this point.

    Not familiar with this, will have to look it up, but didn't we already have equality for women laws on the books? What else is another doing to do that wasn't there before? Discrimination hasn't been legal for a long time already...

    Saved Auto industry

    Sure...gave it a bailout and mostly gave control to the Unions, which were largely responsible for the bad shape the industry was in to begin with, AND bypassed laws that should have paid off people that were owed the debts first...there was a huge snafu on who got paid in what order and who got left out. I would have been better to let them go through controlled bankruptcy, and shed all the old contracts and start afresh. The auto industry is slowing movinig, but still shackled with unreasonable contracts with labor unions. Obama's bailout of the industry was nothing but a huge GIMME to the unions. It also represented a very uncomfortable intrusion of the Federal Govt into private business....bad precedent.

    Increased auto fuel economy standards

    I suppose a good thing...not a huge issue for me personally.

    Reformed student loans saving 10s of millions of dollars a year

    Perhaps a good start. I think a total revamp of this issues is needed...we need to break the vicious cycle of Universities raising prices higher in persuit of 'free' money coming from the govt. If we cut this a bit, prices might come down. I don't know how to address this one really, but I think this is a direction of thinking that needs to be examined, and I don't see that happening any time soon in congress or with the executive branch. Everyone has a right to try to get in college, but I don't think they have a right for me to pay for it...perhaps rather than loans,

    I was thinking the same thing. I work with lots of republicans and even those people don't have anything good to say about g dubya.

    I think in years, the Dems will think about the same thing with Obama...he's really no better than GW it seems...sure does support the same policies, but with an accelerated spending twist to it all.

    Thanks for the info.

    I was considering lasik....they said the newer stuff could help me, and since I have a slightly more thickened than normal cornea that I might be a good candidate.

    Last visit in, they said they just noticed that I was starteing to get some light cataracts. Perhaps I should just wait and if those get worse...look into the procedure you did.

    I'm just very squeamish about someone cutting on my eyes....I've worn contacts for decades and can stick my fingers in my eyes..etc.

    But someone else prying them open while I'm awake and doing stuff...kinda freaks me out....

    But thanks for the info, I may indeed need it.
