Interesting that many of your same arguments would work for the legalization of pot.
I wish there was some chance we could get more of a libertarian govt in the US....go back to more strict reading of the constitution, and less govt. intrusions of adult lives.
While I'm at it...I guess I'll also wish for a pony.
"How does one go about getting movies/videos off the Usenet for free?"
Easily...just like you'd get any other file off usenet for free...provided you have access to a good usenet server.
People have been trading all sorts of files on usenet long before there were any P2P applications...way before they were even thought of.
There is also IRC you can look at too....
Get a good news client...do a little googling...and you'll find out. Take a look at Slyck for a start...look into nzb's and the like, they make downloading off usenet a snap.
"This reminds me of when people used to create a file called * in your home directory at university (which annoyingly under linux, is possible). The amount of people that would be annoyed by it's presence and would inevitable type "rm -rf *" to get rid of it, and delete their entire home directory."
That's cool.
So...how do you get rid of that file/directory called "*"?
Trouble is, there is a huge dirth of good rocking music that everyone knows and wants to 'jam' with on these games.
Sadly...that's why they go for all the older classic rock stuff.
I'm often surprised and sometimes a little saddened when I see 11 year olds....wearing Zeppelin and AC/DC tshirts around. My generations music should, for the most part, have been put aside in place of newer bands.
Trouble is...in the mid to early 90's....no one came out to replace them, to take the torch and move it forward.
Where are the Stones of today? Where are the world wide famous bands that youth can all get behind and have in common? I know there are other reasons things are so splintered.....but, man...it is sad to see there is no really 'generational' music that most all of the kids know and love.
Growing up, I could go to any party...and there would be at least one Zeppelin album and some Floyd we could throw on, and everyone knew the stuff....and this was back when it was pretty new stuff.
"That depends on the P2P network you use and your application. Its certainly possible to download off of some P2P networks with some clients without sharing anything."
Or just get it off USENET.
Frankly....I just have never found P2P faster than just getting it off USENET. I've tried BT, I checked my settings, ports opened...etc. It was just always pretty slow, and I have a decent, non-capped, business connection at home.
Besides...getting it off the newsgroups is less traceable.
"I don't want to get into an immigration debate but aren't the illegal immigrants you don't want doing the jobs americans don't want to do? Otherwise they wouldn't find any jobs out there, and they'd come back."
That's always been a fallacy....they are just undercutting what US citizens need for pay for those jobs...they've killed the house construction industry. Well, at least before the economy tanked.
With the economy the way it is....I'm guessing more and more US citizens are gonna be scrounging for just about any job they can get....which may start to push the illegals out....
"I believe in the second world war, the english government had a large number of road signs removed, to help confuse the germans if they ever managed an invasion, the only result was alot of lost brits."
Hmm...VERY interesting story.
But, it makes me pause to wonder, just exactly WHO are we trying to confuse down here in New Orleans?? The tourists??
I mean...we've been missing street signs down here ever since I lived here...even way back before Katrina.
"Your right to freedom of speech has long been taken away, long before "governments" ever got involved."
The freedom of speech provisions are there to prevent the GOVERNMENT from limiting your speech, not private entities. For instance, the state govt. cannot tell you things you cannot display in your work environment, say your cube. But, your employer, a private entity can have regulations on what is and is not acceptable in their privately owned place of business.
"They actually don't care if models have a small tattoo or two anymore. They just 'shop it out later, when they're already tweaking other stuff."
But, the VS models...aren't JUST for photos, they tour these girls around for shows....and you can't shop out ugly tattoos on them while walking down the runway.
"with so much data sharing and no way to remove things. Their is a real issue here, but the solution is to try and think about how we as society judge people unreasonably,"
Unfortunately, this is just an inherit trait of a society. This has gone on since the dawn of time. The only way to change this, would be to change basic human nature.
"Suing for discrimination agains that would be perfectly valid, unless you can also show an inverse link between people with tattoos, and skills required to do the job."
Well, I'd guess that high end lingerie model isn't a good career for you if you are covered in tattoos.
Not a lot of flaming skulls and roses painted on those bodies of the ladies at Victoria's Secret, eh?
Actually....I would promote that if people want to express opinions on the internet (especially if they might be controversial and hinder a job hire) they should take advantage of just that fact that the internet can be anonymous!!
I have been of the humble opinion that you should pretty much always use a pseudonym, never your real name.
If you post pictures of yourself in college, sitting half nekkid sucking on a skull bong, well, you're just asking for trouble later in life.
I'm thankful that back when I was in school....there were no digital cameras nor internet to publish said images to. Thankfully....I think I have all the negatives...
We can't seem to keep the LEGAL immigrants we want...the educated ones, that followed the laws, and contribute to the system. Instead, we are stuck with the ILLEGAL ones, that...well......generally are the opposite of the aforementioned legal ones.
"Bonham--so good he doesn't get enough praise (and he gets a lot) "
Interesting...if you have time, would you expand on what you and other drummers like about him?
Don't get me wrong...I loved Bonzo on Zeppelin, but, as just a non-drummer listener, I never thought of him as one of the 'greats'....his solos seemed kinda boring and really repetitive and not that flashy. Ok, the kettle drums and playing with his hands were cool, and I must say, once I saw the Zeppelin DVD set out, showing him playing in like '69 or so...I got a much better impression of him that his later years.
I'm not trying to put him down, but, growing up, (and I was and am still a HUGE fan of Zeppelin) I just never thought of him as that good of a drummer as compared to others of the day. He was nice and loud, but, seemed really simplistic if that makes sense?
I'd be looking at a mac mini to serve as a MythTV front end to some tv's in my house. I've been waiting for one to come out that would handle HD content.
"Except for the price tag and the use of overpriced server-class components, yes. The really screwy thing, of course, is that the 24" iMacs all have 4GB of RAM, whereas the hideously expensive quad-core Mac Pro has only 3GB (and you can bet Apple will charge through the nose for more)."
That's why with Macs...you buy the min. configuration, especially with respect to the RAM and HDs....and just add them in yourself when it arrives at your home in the box.
I'm looking to maybe get a Mac pro...I want to load it up, but, I will do it as I described above. The day I order the MacPro..I will order RAM and HD's from a 3rd party store....hopefully they'll all arrive about the same day.
I wish I lived where you did for DMV then.....when I have to renew plates or even drivers license...I pretty much count I'll be there most of the day. 4 hours min.
How does a landlord lose a rental property (unless he can't get anyone to rent from him)?
I wish there was some chance we could get more of a libertarian govt in the US....go back to more strict reading of the constitution, and less govt. intrusions of adult lives.

That's why you never marry them...at the very worst, live with them if you must, it is kinda like living with an option to buy.
But don't marry them...that way, when it is time to trade up to a newer model...you don't lose half your shit...
If you do want to pay...there are ways of doing that anonymously too. One time CC's...send money orders....etc.
Easily...just like you'd get any other file off usenet for free...provided you have access to a good usenet server.

I joined the "Reading Glasses" club myself this past year.....
No..but Pelosi does, and we can now see who is running things for the most part in DC.
So far...Obama does not appear to be the one wearing the pants with the legislation coming at him from congress.

From what we've seen so far...I wouldn't hold my breath.
We can't seem to keep the LEGAL immigrants we want...the educated ones, that followed the laws, and contribute to the system. Instead, we are stuck with the ILLEGAL ones, that...well......generally are the opposite of the aforementioned legal ones.

As a drummer...what makes him a great drummer?
Can you give me a drummer's opinion on:
John Bonham
Charlie Watts (I have often heard he really does have great time? Even at his current age?)
Ginger Baker
Frank Beard
Carl Palmer
