In order to check whether any of the porn files on kazaa (or wherever) are identical to copyrighted porn, all we need is someone who watches all the porn on kazaa and then compares is with their library of copyrighted porn.
Can I have the job?
Yes you are assigned to the scat and watersports division. Enjoy.
Because Microsoft no longer gets new customers, actually they are starting to lose customers, the only way to raise earnings is to squeeze out more of existing customers locked in.
MS Need to move completely to a rental model. Preferably a "low cost" one, as percieved by the end user, so they wont mind being "locked in".
The eventual coolness of wearable computers shouldn't be underestimated. Sure, it will start out with bleeding edgers being able to fire off posts to Slashdot using nothing but an elaborate series of eye movements. Early adopters tend to look silly to the rest of us. No shame in that
Reaction to mobile phone technology may be an interesting indicator. Here In the UK, people started using those headset/speaker phone thingys a couple of years ago. They often looked like "mentally challenged" people muttering loudly to themselves until you heard them bellow "I'm on the train.. see you at 7". Now a few people have the blue-tooth thingys that look like little Galaxian Ships balancing delicately on the ear...
They look mad to me too, but then again I'm not really "into" mobile technology. And if I were a different hue, would visible blush uncontrollably when mine rings on the train because I forgot to turn it off. [whispers] "I'm on the train, Call you later" [Switch Off]
I'd assume, therefore, that it works like any other software firewall I've used - the default is to ask the user on first connection attempt, and subsequently, until they tell you to always do X.
Funny thing about Software firewalls. They are subject to "Social Engineering". A SW firewall is really 2nd level (even 3rd level) defence. Microsoft have done a good thing by enabling it as default and making it a bit more functional, as an interim measure. (I suspect ZA may disagree)
To stop rogue incoming traffic,
it's easier than trying to work out which of the many interrelated default Windows services they can disable, or configure to listen to local requests only... which is the approach I assume Longhorn is be taking.... Security-wise this is the conceptual flaw with Windows. Power without responsibility... A firewall will paste over the cracks for a short time - but for how long?
To stop rogue out going traffic, well usually its too late by then...
Firewall: "Do you wish to allow "Very Important Microsoft Firewall Update to access the intenet?"
For example I use google's Toolbar 2.0, which has a pop-up blocker. More importantly is how will the firewall interact with programs like Zone Alarm?
"This town aint big enough for both of us"
Generally, you should only have ONE software firewall enabled at a time. Some people swear by two (or more) but I worry about them... and their IP stack
The one problem with developing useful 3rd party apps under MS is that its just a matter of time..
Of course this is something that Microsoft had to do eventually, especially now that people are getting infected before they get a chance to download security updates.
3rd Party Windows software companies of basic utility sw can now only protect their investments by (ab)using patent law... (eg The One Click Firewall, One-Click Unzip etc...) or having a better support infrastructure (not easy)
It's a catch-22 situation in which you must supply some good warez that they don't have before you can download any
On IRC its about 50-50 whether a server shares mp3s with leechers. With bigger files trading is expected. Allegedly. (Since I use Linux I have no desire for Appz etc.)
The UK seems to ban making backup copies of music you've bought, and doesn't permit you to copy your own CDs so you can listen to them on your car cassette player. Allegedly.
News to me! References ?
When most people see whats available on IRC, and the general high(er) quality rips, they get excited but when the see the "effort" required to get it they almost all loose interest!
I've had an account with Bigfoot for years. Recently they wanted to charge me premium prices for filtering spam. I disagree with email forwarding companies trying to make a business model and charging the end user for effectively reducing their OWN wasted bandwith on what was their core business. We should not have to pay more to NOT get spam. I think some "anti-spam" people are happy to try to make money off the backs of spammers (sounds familiar?)
All this patent stuff is now out of hand...
General knowledge often provides 95% of the "original idea". Most geeks could probably fill the gap bases on what is known to date if they get a good nights sleep with pen and paper close by.
The problems almost hark back to the invention of the telephone which IIRC was "invented" by
two people at more or less the same time

As the base of common knowledge increases this will only get worse until something gives....
I think its even more of a problem because you dont even have to have a working implementation AFAIK.
Lordy
Oops, I think you misread my post because I quoted it badly! I just was surprised that someone could not be sure or remember correctly which way the immigrants were going across the Chunnel!
When I was over in France I saw a doco about one of the unintended consequences of the Chunnel: muslim & eastern european refuges. It's easier for them to cross in the train. (I can't remember which way they were headed!
Comments like that really dont help to dismiss the "insular" tag some people have.
BTW The UK Is an Island. HTH.
"In order to qualify for the TopTen program consideration, any commercial production database implementation was required to feature a minimum of 500GB of data for Microsoft Corp.'s Windows and NT platforms and 1TB of data for all other platforms. Respondents offered details through a questionnaire based upon their deployment's size, workload and DBMS, server and storage environments."
This is already in Thunderbird and Mozilla Mail
(The Junk button) But IMO it seems to have a much lower hitratethan dedicated systems (POPFile, SpamAssasin etc). Mine has about
70 % hit rate and no easy way to see whats happening with the corpus etc. I could probably better this hit rate with a few simple filters.
Im considering going back to POPFile..

For once a month passwords I use a common cryptic
string + (jan,feb,mar etc )
eg k3wl!jan , k3wl!feb etc.
If the system prevents duplicate passwords then I append the year digit too.
Althoug I read long ago at least one account on such a network is likely to have the name of the month as a password. (with maybe 0,1 or 99 added I guess)
In a big enough company a cracker could probably cycle through users asmith, bsmith etc trying the month as a password
I hope Konquerer, Galeaon et all leave Mozilla behind because, as much as I like Firebird, if I need another Profile Dialog just because I have two screens I'm gonna scream...

Like another poster said .. monopoly.
Try to buy an intel box without Windows pre-installed. It can be done but MS has not made it easy for the vendors
