No, 'gold' in the software world means that it's ready to be shipped. When a beta or something 'goes gold', it's reached its final production version and is ready to be sold to the masses.

  2. Re:fun in school on Making Science and Math Kid Friendly? · · Score: 5, Insightful
Speaking as a 'kid', i'd have to say that that doesn't work; at least, it wouldn't at my school. Kids are so stupid today, it's outrageous. Examples: (1) The people who are constantly bitching about how poor the schools are and how they can't afford good books and computers are the same people who think it's hilarious to smash garbage cans and write on walls and steal school property. (2) A teacher will assign work and give the students class time to complete it. Instead of doing work, the students will talk, incessently. The teacher will say, hey, if you don't stop talking, i'll assign more home work. The students don't even pause. The teacher assigns more home work. 'Awwwwww. BOOOO. What the fuck!! This sucks!!!'

The problem is, kids today think the world owes them something. Teachers aren't people who are trying to educate them and motivate them and prepare them for the real world; they're people who are trying to hold them back and 'cramp their style'. When a student is told that doing something is wrong, and then the student gets punished for doing it, it's never a matter of 'oh, shoot, i did something wrong and i got caught doing it' -- it's always 'ugh, this fucking sucks, this is bull shit, i don't have to put up with this'.

I hate to sound like a fascist or something, but rewards don't work with kids today. They're too 'punk' for rewards. What schools need is discipline. I don't mean dress codes and other 'pre-emptive' kinds of discipline that everybody seems to like -- those just hurt the people who aren't jerks. I mean real-world, reactionary discipline. When you do something wrong in the real world, you're generally get punished by being fired or fined or jailed. School should be the same way. When you call a teacher a 'fucking retard', you shouldn't just get an unexcused absence for that period. You should get a detention, and if you don't serve that detention, you should get suspended. If you destroy school property, you should be fully expected to pay for every last dime of it. Et cetera. :/

  5. ... Great on Hollywood's Rising Fascination With Videogames · · Score: 2, Interesting
Fantastic. Because game-based movies are always top-notch. Have you seen the Alone in the Dark trailer? The last AITD i played was for DOS or something, so i may've missed any pre-butchering done by the latter episodes of the series, but i distinctly remember that there was a guy who was alone in the fucking dark. Maybe i didn't get far enough, but i don't recall any armies or face-huggers or intestinal surgeries or car crashes or virtual-reality simulators or clichéd military lingo at all in that game.

At least Mortal Kombat, while still a horrible movie, stuck roughly close to the plot line. You could even consider the Final Fantasy movie to be worthy of the name (although it did have too much military lingo and not enough fantasy). But i'm so tired of Hollywood putting out 'horror' movies based on games. Every time someone says they should make a Silent Hill movie, i just want to scream. There is absolutely no chance you could do that game justice. They will RUIN it. They will turn it into a machine-guns-and-zombies-let's-lock-and-load-boys gut-fest, like 80% of every other video-game movie Hollywood has put out.

Seriously, i want no part of any games in Hollywood. The quality of games is already decreasing at an alarming rate (ever since 2000 or so, it's been to the point where there are maybe one or two decent games a year) -- we don't need Hollywood milking things even more than they already are (if that's possible). We don't need to start any more Pokémon crazes. You remember what happened there -- the market became ridiculously over-saturated, and it absolutely RUINED the entire franchise. Final Fantasy is pretty close to that, and so are 'survival-horror' (actually just third-person zombie-shooter) games.

Also, once again i have to express my disdain for military lingo in movies. I swear to God, one of those stupid phrases ('back-up'/'lock and load'/'we're surrounded'/'we've lost contact') will ruin the credibility of the entire movie.

Hollywood has made me such a bitter person. :(

Definitely more of a fun hobbiest toy. The PS2 is about (or is about equivalent to) a 200-MHz system, so it's not exactly what you'd call blazing. You can't do a whole lot of desk-top stuff on it without getting pretty annoyed pretty quick. (The Browser Formerly Known As) Firebird takes a full minute to load up on my PS2.

As far as 'full support' goes, i'm not quite sure what you mean, or really how to answer what i think you mean. The graphics chips are about as fully supported as they can get, but the thing about PS2 Linux is that everything runs on top of Sony's run-time environment. That is to say, you can't program an actual game using Linux that runs on the PS2. You can program a game that runs on Linux, which runs on top of the RTE, which runs on the PS2. Other than that, though, it's pretty much open to whatever.

That said, i think i wish i'd waited for the price to drop. I haven't really done much of anything with my Linux kit. In fact, the part i love the most about it is the mouse and keyboard. Best mouse and keyboard ever. <3

You don't need it, though. I zero-filled my drive (so gone was the partition), and then needed it replaced, and Dell had been smart enough to include a disc which contained a bootable diagnostics utility. So... yeah.

Aye, there certainly is some good non-Japanese composing done. I can think of several domestic soundtracks that i've liked (SimCity 2000/3000, MoH, Earthworm Jim, &c....). If i came off as though i don't appreciate North-American composers, forgive me; i was focussing more on the licensed-music issue. Either way, good though American composers may be, the fact remains that most people don't care. There are no 20-inch rims and blunts and thongs in any of this sort of music, so nobody wants to listen to it. Alas~

  20. Re:Even domestic real game sountracks are butchere on Game Music Continuing To Gain Recognition · · Score: 1
Yeah, they sometimes do release chopped-up soundtracks. They did that with Final Fantasy N Generation and Final Fantasy S generation. They had a small soundtrack with Final Fantasy Anthology, as well, and Silent Hill 3 also comes with a soundtrack (which is almost exactly the same thing as the Japanese OST, minus a song or two, i think). The thing is, i don't think it would matter, even if they did start releasing full OSTs to the 'general' public, especially in America. It would end up being a waste of money for them, because most people don't want to buy real game music.

The ones that do are pretty content with ordering them from overseas, i think. (I am, anyway.) It's $10 shipping that way, or $10 over-priced at your local EB. Take your pick. :/

  22. How about no, Scott on Game Music Continuing To Gain Recognition · · Score: 5, Insightful
I hate to be an elitist, but most of this crap isn't 'game music', any more than DMX and 50 Cent are 'movie music'. What's happening is not game music gaining recognition. What's happening is (mostly American) game developers recognising that stealing songs off MTV and sticking them in games is profitable. HOORAY. I would have never guessed that the trash that stays at number one on TRL is the same kind of music that people would like in games!

The real game music artists are the people like Nobuo Uematsu, Motoi Sakuraba, Sound Team jdk, and Yasunori Mitsuda. While the article mentions the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor soundtracks (composed by Michael Giacchino and Chris Lennertz, respectively), which is cool, those are definitely not the focus of the 'recognition' that game music is supposedly gaining. Compilations of licensed rubbish are the kind of 'game music' that's gaining recognition.

The American game developers (primarily EA, of course, but EA probably owns 80% of the American game industry anyway) have discovered that it's not only easier and cheaper to license music, but it's also more profitable, because now they can make money off the compilation albums. When they start selling even the basest of real game soundtracks (like Final Fantasy) domestically, then we can talk about game music gaining recognition. :(
