Many of you would rush condemn GPL violators but some of those same people do not seem to have a problem with Psystar violating the license agreement for OS X. Hypocrites! The fact that Apple is a company rather than an independent developer should not make a bloody difference. Copyright and license agreement violations are serious issues regardless of the parties involved.
When you purchase or download software you are bound by the license agreement regardless of whether that license is GPL or some other license. The ELUA for OS X is readily available outside of the packaging online for anyone to read prior to purchasing an OS X "upgrade" box. The fact that the installer does not check for a previous install is irrelevant.
If the GPL is to be considered a defendable in court, then so must the ELUA of OS X or windows. Nobody is forcing you to use a particular OS and nobody is entitled to software on their own terms.
My AVCHD video camera (HDR-TG1) fits in a Cybershot case and can record over 60 minutes in 1920X1080 resolution on 4 or 8GB memory sticks with 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. The video can be editing on Intel macs using iMovie 08.
Alternatively, you could buy one of the hard disk based AVCH cameras and record hours of video without having to swap any tapes.
I'm seeing an exodus from mac hardware among photographers which as a shareholder concerns me greatly (I've sold 1/2 my shares this year). Unfortunetly apple is the only mac vendor..
I'm hoping adobe ports stuff to linux.
Ok, sorry but you just revealed yourself as a troll. No serious photographer would use linux. Hobbyists maybe but they would not be potential customers for Apple in the first place if they were considering linux.
Post some links to evidence of this great exodus or shut up already.
If you cannot afford a MBP and yet you feel the need to have firewire ports, I'd suggest either looking at getting a raise or setting a budget for yourself where you can "save" the money for one. Alternatively, you could look into getting a better paying job.
A laptop is not a necessity, especially one with firewire ports which most PC laptops still do not have. It might be a good idea to examine whether you actually need firewire especially if you are on a limited income and most camcorders coming out are USB only now.
I'm perfectly happy with my 24" iMac and I'm thinking of getting rid of my 1st gen MBP since my iPhone satisfies most of my portable computing needs.
"Really, it makes sense. Imagine 2 million people download "punch a monkey" via the Google store. The malware, not surprisingly, racks up data access fees for customers."
We had PRECISELY this for Windows Mobile (and for mostly all platforms excluding iPhone) for many, many years. NOTHING of consequence happened. Yes, there was a Symbian worm that would spread itself via MMS and it would rack up your bill but it is only fitting. We had before that windows zombies that would dial-up premium numbers with the same result. Nothing REALLY big happened.
There is something wrong when the trust and the tools provided by Microsoft seem "too much" and "too liberal" to be allowed for our own good.
Nothing really big happened because neither Symbian or Windows Mobile had a centralized app store like the iPhone has and apparently the Android platform will have.
Let's face it, how likely is it that the average Joe would recycle a dead battery assuming there were even any battery recycling facilities nearby?
Replaceable batteries most likely end up in the trash and then the landfill and if a battery is replaceable the manufacturer of the device will most likely look for the cheapest source for those batteries since they assume that the consumer will simply buy a replacement placing the extra cost of a longer lasting battery on the consumer.
Quantas has been in the papers and inordinate number of times this past year for either crashes or near crashes caused by faulty equipment. I seem to recall an incident where a huge hole ripped in the side of the plane because luggage was not strapped in properly in the luggage compartment.
Jobs started NeXT Inc. and launched NeXTStep with a dock in 1987. The last time I checked, 1987 came before 1993. Just sayin'.
Here is a wikipedia page about the dock:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_(Mac_OS_X)
Sorry but the Dock comes from NeXTStep which was demoed in 1987 and shipped in 1989 by NeXT Inc which was started by Steve Jobs after he was forced out of Apple. Later, NeXT was bought out by Apple and Steve Jobs returned to Apple as acting CEO.
Open standards help prevent vendor lock-in, not whether or not you have access to the code. While you could look at the source of an open source application to reverse engineer a file format, users generally do not write code or even look at code so the code would be of little use if the format was proprietary to a specific open source application.
Having said that, most users only pay lip service to vendor lock-in or whether code is open source because it is the in thing to do these days. At the end of the day, they want the cheapest and most usable solution that best fits their needs.
I think open source has a place in software development in terms of pushing open standards and protocols by providing the plumbing for our connected world but I'm not sure if open source is as useful for desktop applications and games where successful games and apps are the result of market research, usability studies and a lot of professional QA.
I could access Google Gmail through mail.app already via the pop interface. This just seems like another case of someone trying to capitalize on the iPhone's popularity and attempting to duplicate functionality that already exists in the base install of the iPhone/iPod Touch OS. I like managing my Podcasts in iTunes and I prefer checking my Gmail on my computer.
As for people mentioning OpenMoko, it's not only the "software stupid" but nobody outside of the nerd community wants to put up with crippled hardware just because the OS in fully open source.
Android also appears to have issues and there is no coherent "app" store for that platform yet. The Apple app store is popular because it is easy for basically anyone to use.
Two words - enterprise functionality. Or lack thereof.
Yes, yes, I know it has push email now, I've also read a lot of reports saying your battery will be gone in 6 hours if you turn it on.
What sort of functionality are you looking for? In the enterprise, IT staff do not want to see people installing unsigned applications from who knows where on their devices.
Salesforce is available on the iPhone as are a number of other business related apps via the app store. There is also an enterprise management UI for enterprise wide deployment which is available for both OS X and windows as well as a web based console.
Install it and 'Google Update' is silently installed along with it with no apparent way of turning it off besides regedit/msconfig. So much for "Don't be Evil".
*sarcasm* Oh no.... they are everywhere. All these "evil" applications either installing updaters or checking on launch for updates to make getting bug fixes user friendly for the average human. *sarcasm*
I'd suggest that you get yourself checked out for Schizophrenia or laying off the reefer for a while.
If you are that paranoid, I'd suggest sticking to a browser like lynx and compiling all your apps from source after a full code audit.
It's people lke you that confuse the general populace about what "real" spyware is.
Where all the content is strongly encrypted with AES. Maybe you shouldn't have bought that iphone if you were concerned about security!
They have a model for the Blackberry in the works. Since this device is designed for forensic investigation by either law enforcement or corporate compliance investigators, I would not be surprised if it hooks into low level OS calls put in place for this purpose. The NSA has a back door into virtually all systems out there.
I've used my MBP with XP and Vista through bootcamp so I can confirm that the optical port is controlled by software. The optical port was always on under XP?Vista until Apple released updated custom drivers to make it behave in the same manner as it does under OS X.
Apple computers have some hardware differences. For instance, they use EFI instead of BIOS and stuff like optical audio ports are software controlled to only turn on when there is something plugged into them. While Intel macs might use some off the shelf components, they are usually customized in a way so that they can be addressed from the OS rather than BIOS level.
Works great here in Canada on Fido too. In fact, now I get the blue GPS blob showing up within a few seconds instead of half and minute to a minute, if at all in most places now.
I have to believe that some of the problems people are having are a combination of receiving the wrong sim card from AT&T or T-Moble Europe, over subscription of 3G cell towers and misconfiguration of some of the 3G towers as well as some bugs in the firmware.
Here in Canada, most people have been having decent service and my local Fido store made a point to ensure that any existing customers received new sim with their iPhone if their sim appeared to be too old.
"After complaining to a manager, Goodman was able to get a replacement unit, but the reception issues persisted. On Thursday, he was told by an AT&T customer service representative that its cell towers are having trouble recognizing the iPhone 3G on the network, and that a fix was forthcoming."
This is the first comment by an AT&T employee where they appear to admit that these issues are partially their fault. Did I call it or what? I bet they decided to call Fido as I suggested on various boards and ended up finding something.
What's the point of using any word, when you could use more simpler words instead?
The only issue is whether or not a word is used correctly.
I suppose it's a really a judgment call people have to make. Do you want to be brief and possibly make yourself less understood by the general populace or would you rather use your own words to describe how something makes you feel? Taking the latter approach is more personable and create the possibly of not only getting your point across on an intellectual level but can also engage your audience emotionally. It has been shown that people often remember what people say longer if they are able to attach emotion to those words.
Why do people on slashdot feel the need to use words like cognitive dissonance, a psychological/clinical term rather than just expressing how it makes you feel?
Although the keyboard issue worries me as even the one in the 02 store was lagging (ive just ordered one of ebay:S),I think the signal problem is down to those countries who have younger 3G networks.
3G has been around in the UK for quite some time, and my mates who work in 02 have not had a complaint about 3G reception. Although I'm inclined to believe that the carriers in the states' are exacerbating a problem with the iphone
It is mostly an AT&T (US) problem. In Canada, we have a fairly young 3G network as well and Fido did have some problems with the iPhone for a few days but it seemed to have been fixed on their end somehow.

For most people, time=money and the more you earn and the less free time you have causes the value of that time to rise.

Dude, both are using the webkit engine. Code to standards and test on your browsers and you should be fine.

When a big solar storm turns off GPS for a few hours or days. I know some people that have become dependent on their nav-computers.
If drivers cannot find their way around the old fashioned way then maybe they have no business on the road and should have their licenses revoked.

It is MSFT's interest to promote their own quasi standards to encourage Windows platform lock-in.
