I'm going to an indie rock concert tomorrow (Saturday) night. AFAIK, it's a bunch of local bands that will be playing only video game-style music.
If you're located in the State College / Penn State area, and you read slashdot (presumably that last requirement is not presumptious) you should come. There are flyers for it all over campus.
I use Firefox with AdBlock, and I've got to say that I only block ads that I think are obtrusive and annoying. I don't think anyone is losing any business from those "IF THIS BANNER IS FLASHING, YOU'VE WON!" things that just give me a headache.
If you don't want us to block your dumb ads, DON'T make them annoying and distracting, make them catch the eye without being obnoxious.
I'll have you know that an Apple Authorized Reseller that I am VERY CLOSELY affiliated with once grew from a single store to three, making it the largest reseller in 5 states. At our peak, Apple started opening retail stores. We were somewhat worried, but then Apple reassured us that our sales would not be hurt in the long run. Less than a year later, they opened a store FIVE MILES AWAY from one of ours, and we had to close down shop. That was 2003. Recently, Apple opened another store very close to one of our existing ones (we were actually advised to open this store there in 1997 or '98, before the first Apple retail store, because Apple felt they were underrepresented in the area, and we could do well). Needless to say, our store is hurting quite a bit. Still, I remain a huge fan of Apple because of their products and MOST of their business ethics.
I don't want to say which chain i worked for, because I don't want them to be any sort of target. I do not represent the company in any way, except that I once worked there.
I've spoken to Apple representatives about this before, against my better judgement, and most of them really seemed to care about our plight, and actually feel ashamed of their company. As a lot of mac-people say, "Steve refuses to be wrong," and that's why the Apple-owned retail stores are getting special treatment. It's a sort of love/hate relationship Apple and I have, but I'd never give it up
... or at least hopefully half like 2. what can i say -- wishful thinking, though these Namco things you hook up to your tee vee are nifty. does anyone have any info on when doom 3 will be ported to Mac OS X??? -- hytmal
the person that typed up this little abstract (as well as a whole lot of the/. crowd) is really starting to bug me, throwing around the term "fair use". Fair use has to do with doing whatever you want with something you own, implying that owning something gives you permission to do whatever you want with it, within some limits (with this, i wholeheartedly agree). however, there is no violation of your fair use rights when someone makes a device that can do less than you want it to; in this case, they are just trying to protect the copyright holders.
On a related note, I think the whole FairPlay/PlayFair thing is kind of ridiculous; when you bought the song (or started using iTunes), you agreed not to circumvent the DRM, which of course many people who use this software are violating, citing that "hey i bought it, i can do whatever i want with it". Just because you can doesnt mean you should -- i agree that the government really shouldnt be stepping into matters like this (and abortion), but while they are, why not just follow the law, and speak out against it, instead of being hypocritical.

i saw roz ho speak at macworld in SF last month. she totally acted like a puppet on a string, all smiles and never looking at whom she is talking to, always the audience. all kinds of freaky, man...
i currently go to penn state, and, though many people do use iTunes, less and less have been using it as of late, as evidenced by the number of shared libraries in iTunes. I believe this is due to the fact that napster provides free streaming music, which can only be listened at your computer. otherwise songs are $.99 per download (in.WMA format! YUCK!).
Also, as a mac user on campus, i am still technically paying for the use of napster, despite the fact that i have no way of using it at all. This topic really angered a lot of my instructors last semester, particularly in the comp sci department, as we just got a new building. However there is no longer enough in the technology budget to stock all of the new computer labs in this building.
This caused the school to beg microsoft for a donation, which means that it looks like we wont be using SunBlades in any of our new computer labs. I've got to be honest -- one of the big reasons i chose penn state is because they werent using windows machines in the intro programming classes, but now that is changing, even contrary to many professors desires.
i hope i dont have to transfer to CMU -- cause im a poor college student!
oh man, ouch, blizzard, ouch. im in the same frat that this guy was in in college (presumably UCLA). i hope maybe he can still get me a job there:-\...

If you havent seen the movie, dont read this.
If you are confused about the nature of the One with regard to his overall role in the Matrix's design,
Neo is the bug report
The architect is like the guy that looks at neo, sees how they got to that place and fixes the flaws that led him there. By entering that last door, it's like a breakpoint inserted into a program's source, the architect can stop, look at everything that happened up until this point
