I speculate they're heavy and they're complicated, but they seemed to work pretty well on the Vikings and the Russian-built Venera.
the Venera project by the Soviets was used for landings on Venus by method of protective hemispheric shells, three parachutes, a disk-shaped drag brake, and a compressible, metal, doughnut-shaped, landing cushion.
reposting with some mod points because this message is dead accurate
Debian has been a joke in the business community for a long time now but now even the geek community is jumping ship. Back 6 years ago I used to tolerate the constant political infighting and slow release schedule of Debian. But lately other distros have surpased Debian to such a degree that it makes debian look ridiculous and using Debian an excercise in masochism or stupidity.
Why does Frankenstein's monster want to kill Frankenstein. Perhaps it was for making him flawed.
i don't wanna come off like a nitpicking bastard, but in Mary Shelley's version (the original), Frakenstein's monster doesn't want to kill Frankenstein. the monster only wants Frankenstein to suffer for him not creating a female monster.
i actually just finished reading it yesterday, and all i can say is, if you haven't read the original, you're in for a real treat. all those movies are stupid in comparison (except for Young Frankenstein, which rocked).
wait hold on everybody. i think we're (or me) getting confused on 'why' a package should be upgraded in the first place.
on production servers, security is a high priority while new features can take a back seat. if a new hole or exploit is found in some service, will the 'STABLE' package be upgraded for protection?
i use Debian on a daily basis, but there are quite a few things that really turn me off from the distribution (and what makes other distributions more attractive). i'm not trying to troll here, but if my facts are wrong or perhaps i lack information, please someone let me know so i can adjust my thinking.
one of the number one reasons i don't like debian is that packages in the stable branch are typically full point releases behind! have you seen the version of vi in their stable branch? holy, say hello to the 90's please!
i sysadmin 5 debian machines at work, and all i gotta say about debian is this: 1995 called. they want their linux machines back.
however, i do feel very comfortable configuring debian. it's exactly like redhat 5.2, but with a good package management system.
personally, i'm going to stay the redhat route and use Fedora on my workstations (using freshRPMS as my apt respository).
why is everyone on this kick that fedora is completely different than RHEL? it's not!
fedora is basically just rawhide under a new name. it's exactly the same as redhat with newer packages. i just don't understand why this is so hard for everyone to understand.
so, all the CG studios will continue to easily use Maya with fedora; end of story.
Unfortunately, this seems to be well beyond the range of the average driver.
this problem exists more often in countries with poor driver training. in counties like Germany, you will see exactly what you describe, whereas the fast lane is always faster then the next lane.
i commuted from Santa Barbara to Santa Monica every day for a year, and let me tell you that American drivers absolutely suck.
it would be nice if modern cars had a little infrared ranger on their front bumpers, so when you encounter heavy traffic, you set your ranger to automate braking and accelerating to keep your car in perfect harmony with the car ahead of you. perhaps there could be a little light on the back of other cars to let you know they are using their rangers as well.
also, it would be nice if red brake lights had varying degrees of brightness. most of the trouble in heavy traffic is a person might barely tap their brakes, and the person behind over compensates his tap with a harder tap. that first tap actually caused a 5 second wait 500 meters away. a gentle tap should barely illuminate the brakelights while a full stomp should be very bright. by knowing just how hard someone is braking ahead of you, you can act more appropriately.
Debian releases timely security updates for it's stable branch
one of the number one reasons i don't like debian is that packages in the stable branch are typically full point releases behind! have you seen the version of vi in their stable branch? holy, say hello to the 90's please!
i sysadmin 5 debian machines at work, and all i gotta say about debian is this: 1995 called. they want their linux machines back.
but i don't feel uncomfortable configuring debian. it reminds me of redhat 5.2, but with a good package management system.
also, telling my boss at work that our debian machines will be using the 'unstable branch' really isn't a good idea.
no thanks, i'll stick with fedora using apt from freshrpms. i've never seen a stability difference between debian and redhat.
this 'nigerian spam' idea has appeared in other forms as well.
i'm trying to sell my car and posted it on a few free car sales websites. so far, i've received 4 of emails exactly like this:
"We have a client who is interested in purchasing your ( 2000 vw gti vr6 glx ) for the price of $( 14,500 ).Please forward me your final asking price "
of course, i then reply with the price confirmation, but then i get this:
"Hello,
Thanks a lot for your mail and the information, also for all your efforts towards making this transaction a success, i really love it and wish to buy as soon as possible. Anyway, this is how we are going to seal this transaction there is an associate of mine in the US who is owing me $19,800 i am going to instruct him to send you a cashier's check for that amount, and when it clears your bank you can now send my balance by Westernunion. Although i know that the value of the check is more than the price of the 2000 VW GTI VR6 GLX, but i am willing to trust you with my balance So if this offer is acceptable to you,let me have your contact information so that i can instruct my associate to send you a check, that is your name, address and phone number Please get back to me as soon as soon as you get this mail so that i can know your decision regards this transaction. I am banking on my balance so that i will be able to settle my shippers here in there local office because it is cheaper and faster. My regards to the family
Banks"
so this scam basically falls upon the same principle. obviously we all know where this is going, but i decide to play along anyway and sent him a bogus PO box to send the check to.
the next email was this: "Thanks so much for the mail and the rightful information. Anyway, i just want you to know that what is required is your physical address and phone number, so as to deliver the payment to you in person. So, do well to let me have your Full name, physical address and phone number, in order to get the payment to you as soon as possible. And what do you mean by "terrifc deal"?. Waiting to hear back from you soon. Thank you and God bless.
Regards
Banks"
my question: why does he need my physical address and phone number? it's obvious at this point he will let me know about some snag and that i need to send him some money for whatever reason.
They told the guy point-blank 'we don't like what you posted, so you're fired'.
um, did you RTFA? microsoft said that they didn't like what he posted because it was considered a breach of security.
taking pictures of the loading dock and then describing where on the campus it was was considered to be too much information given to the public.
look, i don't support MS in the least (and in some regard, i downright hate them), but this isn't a free speech issue, it's a breach of security issue.
i am sure that somewhere in his employment contract (either with MS or his temp agency), it mentions that information regarding operating procedures are to be kept confidential.
he violated that, MS called him on it. it's as simple as that.
hopefully, he'll be able to find another job soon.
it would be interesting to take everyone's contacts and find matches. you can have a special people.google.com where you can search for 'popular' people.
Just to clear up a little thing about Debian, yea, stable is some pretty old packages/versions, but it is very well tested, and rock solid.
i keep hearing this about Debian, and indeed it's true. however, i run redhat 9 on all my production servers using the latest packages from the apt-get repository from freshrpms. i have zero stability problems and my servers run rock solid as well.
even though i run redhat systems, i still use vi for every configuration; that's one of the things i like about redhat is you can configure the machine with gui tools or you can do it the old fashioned way (i prefer the old way myself).
besides my redhat experience, i am also the sysadmin for 5 debian (latest stable) boxes at another company. just about every package on there are full point releases behind that latest release (some are 2 year old packages, look at the old clunky vi for an example).
the debian machines are rock solid and i don't have any problems with them at all. of course, the redhat machines are problem free as well.
with my experience, my distro of choice for a production platform? redhat. it has all the great features of debian, plus.
i geuss my point is that debian folks are always saying how stable debian is, but i find that other distros are just as rock solid.
I just hope RedHat 10 includes a 2.6 kernel, so I don't have to bother compiling it myself.
man, i thought the very same thing for the last month or two. but the other day, i downloaded test8 and i've been a happy camper ever since.
actually, compiling the 2.6 kernel is a lot easier than the 2.4 one. there's less commands to deal with and there doesn't seem to be any compile breakage.
And I don't understand this why you need this l33t mentality of yours.
look, i make a lot of money because there aren't many linux developers in comparison to windows certified folks.
I suggest you move on to the BSDs if you want to preserve your feelings of superiority. Or, even better, make some contributions to projects.
i don't need to use any of the BSDs. linux does exactly what i want, and if it doesn't, then i can make it act/feel exactly the way i please. contributions? i maintain 2 sourceforge projects.
You just won't be able to laud it over your friends by saying "I use Linux! You use Windoze? LUSER!"
hehe, too late for that. most of my 'windows friends' have already been converted by yours truly.
however, i do agree that more linux users will mean less open file formats and reduced costs for proprietary software, so your post wasn't a completely wasted effort.
do you realize that most Brits don't realize that the world busts on them for their bad teeth? it's true!
it took sometime to convince my British ex-wife (her teeth were fine).
but the evidence that finally boiled it over was when i rented Austin Powers and made her watch it.
not personally, but i bet Steve Mann does

Venera didn't use retro rocket thrusters.

The Wrights contribution was controled flight, not flying before anyone said it couldn't be done.
i think to be more specific, the Wrights contribution was powered flight.

not anymore. didn't you hear? they got married..
awesome Gleef, thanks for the breakdown.

yeah, mod me down for flame bait because I DARED to profane NGE and Akira
no, the slashdot crowd is passed that. now you just can't say anything bad about debian or kde...
thanks tyler

set your bluetooth setting from 'automatic' to 'on' and it will remain discoverable.

on a side note, i am selling my Volkswagen GTI VR6 GLX if anyone is interested.
so, people selling their autos online, be wary of this scam.
heads up, the standalone composer is the WINDOWS VERSION ONLY.
there is a linux version there of composer++, which is dated in june and is coupled with a mozilla browser.

privacy link or no, aren't what they are doing illegal?
here's a quote from the article:
"Plaxo contains a hack that mines your Outlook profile password so that it can retrieve your contacts unhindered."
isn't this circumventing a security device?
wouldn't this qualify as punishable under the DMCA?

useful to hear the pilots yelling 'holy crap, the controls aren't responding!
