The thing about Virgin's top tier bandwidth offerings is that there are no download caps, as far as I know. There's certainly no bandwidth crippling in place, which the other tiers suffer from.
Glad you liked the list. I just want to point out something about the other two lists posted. First, there's no point in listing ad1.doubleclick.net, ad2.doubleclick.net, etc etc. They're already all blocked, because the doubleclick.net domain is on there. so *.doubleclick.net will be blocked. Secondly, a lot of the hostnames are dead. Also, the akamai servers are not just used by one company, so adding them can cause you to lose content from other sites. Would have been nice if you'd sent me your lists in the first place! But never mind, they'll get added now.
Does this mean that patents held in real life don't apply in cyberspace? What about domains? Intellectual property? What laws are there in cyberspace? Can I copy mp3s online as long as I don't burn them to CD and listen to it off of that?
NO I am NOT stressed. These claims are totally unfounded and I don't know ANYONE who is IN THE SLIGHTEST BIT STRESSED AT ALL. Just because I don't get paid enough, work 12 hours a day and get up at the crack of dawn, it doesn't mean that I AM STRESSED! OK? Now leave me alone!
does anyone have any contact info for the guy who runs freeboxen.com? I've tried emailing the two addresses on the contact page (jlincoln and spamdrop@mindspring.com) and webmaster@freeboxen.com, but they all bounced. can anyone tell me how to get hold of mr lincoln?
> I'm sure that the RIAA has statistics that will say the opposite
Apparently they do, but according to The Register, "the data was collected before Napster's launch". I can't say I've seen their survey myself (I only heard about this today and I have an important meeting at the pub right now) but I wouldn't be surprised.
Raph said "For now, I'm only intending for the grant to extend to the GPL". I think this may have been answered previously in another discussion, but is it actually possible to change the license on code that is already GPLed? Am I just being stupid here?
I don't know about you, but the new slashdot site crashed my browser (Netscape 4.08 on FreeBSD 3.4) every time I tried to load it. I just turned off java & javascript and it seems to be working now. Odd, I wouldn't have thought that a simple server change would be cause that kind of effect - maybe it's just a coincidence or something, but it does seem strange that slashdot worked fine up until today. Netscape under FreeBSD is horribly buggy though, it doesn't really surprise me.
I don't think so - the article says the files were available to "11,000 members of the university's computer network", which makes them publicly available. Also, CMU had policies specifically against this, they just hadn't enforced them up to that point.
OK, so everyone hates JP. But this is a chance to ask him some questions to his face - Slashdot is giving you the opportunity to quiz your nemesis on all those things that are bugging you - why boycott slashdot for that?!?

If we had to use cellphones that were as big as we were, I think the radiation might affect us slightly more as well. (I think I'd be a bit confused as well if I had to go swimming round in a pool of milk after talking to my mate on a 6 foot cellphone, too...)

You can view the list in iptables format anyway:

maybe we need to assume that any given type of crypto is only temporary
Maybe? Since when has any crypto been considered even remotely permanently unbreakable?
Maybe one day we'll be able to illuminate the earth by pointing the moon this way!

Isn't the Internet great? Even script kiddies can get jobs!
You should have seen a couple of the places I've worked at. "huge and partly unmaintained" is an understatement.
So THERE.
he said "jazz".
maybe because it's a free, open standard? or perhaps because it's better quality than the non-free standard?

A colleague pointed me to this article on The Register - looks like there's now a napster clone specifically for finding Metallica music! Check it out: http://metallicster.freeservers.com/.

What are the possible outcomes if it does go straight to the supreme court? What's most likely to happen - Microsoft getting split up, fines, or what?
