He must take cold showers, because heating water generally requires a device called a "hot water heater", in which an electrically-operated device is actually submerged in water! Horrors!
!!!? WTF? Haven't you ever heard of gas powere water heaters? They're safer, more effiecient and MUCH cheaper to operate. Anyone who is using an electric water heater in this day and age is a buffoon. The only experience I ever had with an electic water heater was when I was in college in off-campus housing. It sucked. The water was either tepid or extremely hot. They seem to have problems evenly warming the water. And from what I understand the electric bills were ungodly.
..what about those people who DON'T want to be social? The library isn't really meant to be a place to socialize, nor should it be. If anything it can be a refuge from the horrible forced interactions the some have to endure in daily life: being nice to the boss, saying something nice about someone you can't stand at work or school, etc...
But I think the term "wackaloon" firmly applies to Darl McBride and his associates. So far, they've come forth with nothing, they've criticized the GPL and said it is invalid and now they accuse IBM of conspiring with the OSS community to get them to attack SCO? Does he realize how insane he looks to people who are deeply involved in OSS?
Just thinking about his statement that OSS isn't about free software but it's about taking away value from "intellectual property". And putting it side by side with what the CEO of Ernie Ball said yesterday, I can only come to one conclusion: The proprietary non-free software community is afraid. They are worried that we're winning. We used to be a gnat buzzing around their heads, but now that more people are starting to take notice they are running scared.
Even more amusing is that they make all sorts of crazy statements and claims in order to make it look like OSS and Linux aren't really doing very well, but then they step back and say that we are "de-valuing" their "IP"? How can these two statements co-exist logically? Either OSS is total crap with no real value over non-free/proprietary stuff (as they claim loudly), or it's better than their stuff and therefore makes their products less relevant. They can't have it both ways. To be honest, I think this is the true situation:
OSS IS beating proprietary non-free software (de-valuing their IP). Which means it's not total crap. Because if it is total crap, then what does that say about their software if OSS usage is devaluing their IP?;P I'll leave it up to you folks to battle that one out.
That works as long as you have a piddling small business like yours. People are much better off with custom software in the real world than they are with boxed crap from Microsoft. Like the poster before pointed out, there are plenty of real business applications that will run on OSS platforms. Some of them aren't even OSS! (gasp!) The point is that with a distor like RedHat, the install is even easier than Windows AND it gives you the flexibility that Windows lacks. Finally, it gives you the freedom to avoid forced obsolecence that are the vanguard of Intel and Microsoft. As far as what you said about having to compile the OS... WTF are you talking about? RedHat CAN be recompiled if you really want to do that, but it doesn't need to be. IF, as you say, you are in BUSINESS, then you really don't need things that aren't well supported under Linux. From most of the posts I've seen you write, it just seems that you have a sour grapes attitude about OSS because *YOU* don't get it. The Ernie Ball company apparently does. Your loss.

Just make it so that the Samba code won't run on SCO's products. This is the wisest approach because it's tit for tat. If we pussyfoot around saying that we're going to stick to our ideals while other people abuse them, then we are nothing more than doormats.
Moderation is fine as long as it doesn't water down what people like me are trying to do for the rest of the world: give people what they need with no strings attached.
You right-wingers crack me up. You think YOU are the majority? Hah! The only reason you come out of the woodwork to defend your greedy leaders (who incidentally don't give a damn about you) is because you are so afraid your side will eventually be found out and called on the table for it. *IF* the next election is honest, and *IF* the candidates are decent, then *MAYBE* we'll actually get a government that is there for us and not the corporations. Rememeber this; you're company cares not one iota about you, but people like me and Dennis Kucinich do. You've just been too brainwashed to notice.
"See? See?!! We don't need to patch our systems because Microsoft is doing it for us by mailing us the fix in e-mail! See?! I'm not afraid of worms because eventually someone will fix it for me!"
If being opposed to people who have no conscience when it comes to matters of their fellow man's condition, then call me Osama! Being a good "American" these days is nothing more than being a yes man for the current regime and a blathering idiot who waves flags with no regard for what that flag was supposed to mean when it was created. You fools who think you are good Americans are dupes. Pro-French
Hmm?? Who brought up the French? Leaving aside the fact that they are largely responsible for many great things where it counts: intellectual, artistic and culinary... what did the French do to you? I mean personally? Or are you just joining the rest of the mob and saying "me too"!? Pro-welfare
Just look at any country that actually makes provisions for it's citizens welfare and I will show you a country with a happier citizenry. As it is most Americans are boorish, selfish crabs. To most "good Amreicans" it's all about "me" and everyone else be damned. That's why we had the dotbomb bubble and Enron. That's not business, that's incompetence. But it's also no surprise given most American's penchant for mediocrity. Anti-religion
Religion is fine as long as you don't try to force it down everyone else's throat. When you do that, you start to act like the religious extremists in the middle east. Kind of like Bush encouraging "faith-based initiatives". Why on earth should someone who doesn't believe in Bush's god (ha! fucking sinner) have to go to a church that supports Bush's god and expects that person to also convert or believe in Bush's god? Why should a person who doesn't want to have anything to do with Bush's god have to suffer because the church WON'T give them help unless they convert. If you are "pro-religion" are you saying that people who don't believe what you believe should suffer? Doesn't sound too "christian" to me. I hope Jesus pokes your eyes out when you meet him.
Oh... I see you are trying to start a flame war? OK. Try harder.
What the hell is so hard to understand about French pronunciation? I took French in high school and so should everyone else. It's not that difficult of a langauge given that it's very similar to Spanish and Italian. Sorry, but the "Zoo-vair" pronunciation sounds much nicer than "Ex-Oh". And "qua-saunh" sounds a hell of a lot nicer than Crassandwiches. (Note that CRASS is a big part of American "kulture".) Open your mind and realize that there is a whole other world out there that's been around a lot longer then the blasted U.S.A. Maybe you can learn a thing or two. Let's start with learning a little something about aesthetics.
Too cool. If only I was as interested in politics and world events. I'd probably make better statements about my feelings on American policy. Anyway... welcome to my friends list.
Why was the parent modded down as a troll? It's just a freakin' picture of space and the poster has a sense of humor. Hmmm... maybe the moderator lacks that same sense?
Just take a look at any anti-Bush comment. Most of them get modded down to -1 pretty quickly. But the neocons here usually get modded up by the vocal minority of conservatives.
True. Although it wasn't instant boot, my Atari ST would boot from ROM within 15 seconds if I didn't put in a boot floppy (never got an HD for it).
The thing is that I believe with all the processing power, RAM and HD space making a computer an instant on affair should be relatively simple. It's the useless POST stuff that happens when you turn a system on that screws it up. A PC shouldn't need to POST anymore. Instead there should be a prePOST that happens as soon as the PC gets plugged into the outlet. The status of that perPOST should be stored in non-volatile RAM until the next loss of power. If you really wanted to be paranoid, the prePOST could happen at times when it wouldn't inconvenience the user. Then *IF* the system failed during one of those prePOSTs, the next time the user turns the system on they would be met with a "service me now" message asnd a code in plain engligh saying what is wrong. The point being that POSTs really don't need to inconvenience the user unless something is wrong. Otherwise they should be transparent.
Remember, there is no point in computing if you can't do it with flair and style. That's why I was always impressed with Caldera's ability to allow you to play a game of Tetris during the install of the OS. Now THAT'S stylish...
...is that computers still aren't the same as televisions: You hit the power button and it's just "there". Sure, we've got suspend and standby and XP boots faster, but it's still a few tens of seconds before the desktop is up and running. Even BeOS wasn't up instantly. Until this happens, PCs will not be where *I* expect them to be by now. The PC should be an appliance by now, and it really isn't.
One thing that still tends to suck these days is mail access. With the exception of Evolution and Mozilla Thunderbird, the e-mail experience is really lacking these days. Web mail is nice, but it's still really slow unless you are dealing with proprietary packages. MSN and Hotmail suck compared to what could be if the right combination of technologies were used.
With the departure of Outlook Express, a void will need to be filled and I believe that this opens the door to new alternatives. If there was a project that combined web mail, a mail client and an IM client to produce a seamless user experience no matter which component is used,I think it could blow away anything that MS has to offer. Couple that with a solid backend and a new spam proof protocol and I think e-mail would be revolutionized. As it is e-mail doesn't scale well at all when it comes to content. It should be media rich, but capable of being thinned down to be able to work within a simple text only interface. That's something that is totlaly lacking right now. There's lots of work to be done to turn e-mail into something universaly useful and valuable. Let's take this opportunity to start something now.
You actually believe that reading/. makes you smart? Apparently, you never read comments below 5.
I read below five all the time. In fact I read at -1 flat. That makes Slashdot sooo much more interesting. And truth be told, a lot of comments are only -1 based on political bias more than content.
Maybe they should focus some attention on advertising
For people like me, advertising doesn't work. I would hazard to guess this applies to the majority of the Slashdot readers. If anything, when something is heavily marketed as being "the best" I am more likely to scrutinize it more since it's likely not the best, it's just popular. There is a difference. The masses don't have a good handle on what is "the best". Being #1 is not as important as providing a quality product.
Why must you post such tripe anonymously? Are you afraid we'll find something out that you don't want people knowing?

Just because you lack that same level of intelligence doesn't mean you can go around bashing other people's comments. Go back to your Windows box with your small brain pan and play more Solitaire.
