I'm deeply saddened to read of this incident involving the firefighter. Based on my experiences and observations some 15 years ago from living in the area, there is a deep history of racial tensions and racial segregation among 'whites' and 'blacks' in the area as a whole. Africville, which is now know as Preston/North Preston, generally seen as a community of repressed 'blacks' dating back to the 1900s. Wikipedia has a summary, but if I correctly recall there is a museum in the Halifax area dedicated to explaining the history of the segregation.

In addition, I lived in the Coal Harbour area of Halifx/Dartmouth and left some 15 years ago. I was witness to the first (of now several) riots that broke out at Cole Harbour High School. The first riot was certainly racially motivated, and the later ones from CBC accounts were as well.

From what I've understood, iPhone apps can only be made with XCode. It seems to me that this is also a great way to suck people into Macs. And to properly test your app, you also have to buy an iPhone or iPod touch. And I'm sure people will want to make iPad apps to which requires buying one too. So sure, XCode is free, but to develop the apps, its going to cost over $1500 (if you don't already own a Mac). You still need to make a return on that to recoup investment.

Seems that as long as you own a PC, the Android and Nokia SDKs are more accessible to Devs and you can make the apps in Nix or Windows AFAIK.

Even as Sierra became a bigger game company (up until say 1995), the games they made were somewhat risque and I think they were able to try it out simply because of the low(er) budget constraints. I won't say their adventure games were cheap to make relative to industry costs but, I think games of this sort are more sustainable than the latest 3-D shooter. Without the smaller budgets, we might not have seen games like Police Quest, Space Quest and Leisure Suit Larry (don't get me started on the newer 3-D games. I love Wing Commander 1 and 2 and X-Wing fighter. I don't think any newer games I've played have been as memorable as any newer games I've played.

Funny, before to be a complete ass-hat and douche-bag award winner, there were several career choices and prospects.

Now all you have to do is get a talk-show radio gig or a TV gig that allows you to vent your non-newsworthy anger, opinion and non-sense. Once you get a faithful audience - your anger and opinions rub onto them. The nice community spirit this makes.

Its an unfortunate turn of events. I really like the old-school investigative reporters. They were often criticized on their business and science stories because they aren't experts in the field. I loved the Minidisc. The battery life was nothing short of phenomenal as well. It was too bad the format died off. I'd like to see it come back. I've seen some stereo decks that have MD players on them. I would LOVE if my entire music collection were on MD. It would save space and there'd be less chance of scratching and other problems with CDs.

It was the *software* to upload the bloody songs onto the MD that also drove me mad. Sony should have hired better programmers to make the software and management should have removed some of the restrictions on the format.

There was an interview with a (younger) Sony exec I remember reading ... I think he was in consumer electronics division. He was well aware of the great technologies Sony had made and he'd always been trying to convince the higher-ups to help out. Those execs were much older, didn't understand technology and wanted to protect all other divisions of Sony - music and movie especially. Shame, they'd have a ton more sales from me.

From talking to friends and co-workers that have FB, its either to stay in contact with the BFF (best-friend-forever), because you run a business (or the company you work for) that requires a lot of public exposure to generate money and a reputation, or everyone just asks you do it.

Even though I'd have quite a few people in my profile, the only advantage would be that I could easily reach people outside of where I live. But there's not a lot of people in that category that I know well enough. There's just way way way too much info that goes into these profiles its too dangerous. It just takes one person who knows someone who knows someone who knows *YOU* to spoil everything. I've heard there's still the option of 'private invite only', but someone will have to convince me why this might be a good idea.

IMO, the whole thing just feels like all the GFs I've had that want to "talk on the phone" with me or any other guys their dating for 2 hours asking "what are you doing?" - this just seems like a "What are you doing?" for everybody you know and don't know + your GF.

Only one login-in per CD - you can only use the CD once and then CD expires. You need to keep these CDs secure and when you want to log in and you're out of CDs - you only have to order more CDs.

Since the CD has a custom build OS, it should be set at a reasonable price to account for the fact an OS is on the CD. $20 wouldn't be a bad deal. And you don't have to worry about remembering tricky passwords or key phrases.

You just might have to work a few more hours to make up for this convenience. But for any items of convenience, when do we not spend money?

I think the term "Statistics" has become too general that people don't understand how complicated it can be. People think of Statistics as Bob saying to Alice - "Get me the stats on this weeks' sales." Alice just goes digging around and gets Bob the total sales in $, # of units sold .... etc. People don't understand or know of the concepts that are involved in polling, they just thing they called 2,000 random people and that's it. That's statistics to the public and many college graduates.

I had to take a few stats courses for my BA. Learning stats is humbling - I know I really know nothing about it now after taking a few courses. The classes I took assumed you have no inkling of the basics of calculus or algebra (much past grade 9 level). I didn't know any calculus - I took some 1000 level Algebra but, after graduating a few years ago, I'm teaching my self Calc now and I'm realizing how much less I really understood about Stats at the time.

When people really don't understand the underlying mathematical principles they shouldn't use SPSS or Excel. Heck, if you ask people what 2+2 is, they know the answer. But you tell them to apply X or Y to such and such data set with SPSS, they probably won't investigate the results. Print it out with the report. Done! If you use a Stats program you should understand what your data means, what is happening to your data, what it means when X is applied to your data and what the end result means. I don't think a lot of people are humble enough to say they don't really understand. Little white lies!
