This really sucks for hackers that want to help out with projects on their own time. I hope this doesn't come down to having to clear stuff with one's boss before you can start work on personal projects.

I, occasionally, like to fiddle around with stuff on my own time. Hell if anyone's going to own what I do on my own time. Of course, it's one thing if you use company resources to do the projects.

Well, if this was settled at a District Court of Appeals level there is still State and Federal Supreme Courts to consider. If it went up to the Federal Supreme Court I, and hopefully more affluent groups, would file an Amicus Curiae.

Life would have been a lot different for me if I didn't have the eye problems I have.

The fake book titles was suppose to illustrate a point that the things that government wants to look out for aren't going to infringe on people's freedom. I have nothing to fear by reading up on how a nuclear device works, or the government knowing my travel habits on the airlines. Why shouldn't the FBI know if I'm reading something that could mean they need to pay attention to me, or paying cash for one way trips on a commerical airliner? This seems more like a privacy issue, rather than a freedom/liberties issue. I, for one, don't want this great nation to become a surveillance state (like the former USSR). However, how else are we going to find the people that want to commit these acts? I'm open to ideas.

I don't expect the federal system to play nanny to me. I expect the federal system to protect me from those who would want to kill me (for no reason), as well as protect my freedom and liberty.

Ethics and morals are what I think determine what is right. I believe in the natural law (which comes from God) to determine what is right and wrong. Not _majority_ rule! It sure seems that the current culture has lost that, and has moved to a more "what do I want?" way of thinking.

The quote should actually read "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.". From what I've found the quote comes from the time period 1755-1759, so I assume the context of the quote has more to do with addressing those that would not stand up against the British to fight for their freedom and liberties because it was safer than rebelling. So, I don't think the quote should be pulled out of context like that, although I could be wrong about the context on which Franklin is speaking about. It would be more appropriate for the quote to be applied to situation where people that just sit back and let the government do whatever because they don't want to bother with getting involved.

As for the control of information, that imo is a red-herring too. In a "free" society, there should be no control of information as the free flow of information is crucial to an informed citizenry, and thus to civilian oversight of governmental deeds and misdeeds.

I fail to see how being able to read up on "Nukes for Dummies", "Bio-Terror 101", and "You Too Can Be A Suicide Bomber" is crucial to the free flow of information to keep the citizenry informed, and thus creating oversight of government.

Ok, yes, we need to make sure that government can't hide any <sarcasm>evil plans for world domination</sarcasm>. There should, however, be controls and limits imposed by government to protect its citizens (i.e. the PATRIOT Act), even if that means restricting people's ability to do whatever they want.

GASP! He said he wants to revoke all our civil liberties, and bring about 1984! Seriously, if you think this is going to happen I'm not going to change anyone's mind on the subject. As long as everyone participates, and doesn't turn a blind eye to what goes on, it will not be a problem. People complain too much about not being to do whatever the hell they want to do. What is right, does not always coincide with what you (or a group of people) want.

However, it is true that elements of other religions, or philosophies, can be in line with Christian teachings. But, to say that Christianity recognizes all World Religions as just another path to God is an absolute fallacy.

One of the main tenants of faith in all the denominations of Christianity is that Jesus Christ is the only way (as a previous poster pointed out) to God. If your faith does not agree with that, well then, you aren't Christian are you?

Piece of advice for any College Students that may read this: Get an internship. Think about what you would like to do once you graduate (even if it is a few years off) and try and find an internship in that area. It will get you experience that looks good, as well as possibly a future job offer from that company. That's probably the biggest mistake I made in my college career.

The one interview I did have went well, and I think I was in contention up to the end, but I got that "letter of regret" after a long while.

Personally, I think that the idea that companies are outsourcing because the college education isn't _up to snuff_ is ridiculous. There is a reason that you get a degree from an _accredited_ school. If you pass, then you should know enough to get in the door and get trained on specifics. Do companies expect us to know everything coming out of college? I thought that was the point of the entry-level positions?! If companies don't feel that BA/BS in computer science is teaching enough they should be complaining to who ever the big whigs are that come up with the guidelines.

I don't have a problem with outsourcing to those countries because I see it as helping those who are less fortunate than myself. Yes, I've been searching for work for the last 4 months since graduation and nothing, but I'll survive, eventhough it would be nice to have a job. If my hardship means that several people (and their families) have a better life than poverty, so be it. I know that not everyone's situation is the same as mine when it comes to this issue, and I sympathize. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I don't necessarily see this as totally bad.

On a closing note, I wanted to respond to one of the first comments on this story. If you are just doing computer science for the money I don't think you are in the major for the right reasons. I did it because it was interesting and I was good at it. If you wanted to make money you should probably consider something else like Business. Eventually you may make the money you wanted, but despise the job.

Yeah, from the article it sounds like there have been a lot of stupid mistakes made, but I'm sure that's happened at one time or another with the old system as well.

They just need to sit down and figure out how to secure it better.
