Note that only the Express Betas are free - the final products will be a low-cost alternative, I suppose, for the hobbyist or beginning programmer.

What I would love to see is a return to the days when a development environment was automatically included with a system (like QBASIC was with DOS.) I think a lot of young programmers would get a good start if some bundled, easy-to-use development tools were waiting for them on install (Like C# Express right next to WordPad in the Accessories folder.)

It's sort of amusing that as Microsoft continually "expands" the concept of what qualifies as an OS (Web Browser, Media Player) they've removed another element that used to be considered primary and indispensable.

Perhaps you could think outside the box and read past the title. It might have been phrased too broadly, but the author states very specifically that he is writing about the commercial Linuxes high-priced releases and their deficiencies in competing at that price point (i.e, with Microsoft Windows.) He uses the hardware issue as his main argument.

Apparently you read the title and assumed that the content of the article was "Linux Is Bad," and since you have attached your ego to a piece of software you became personally offended at the suggestion. A flurry of angry bold tags ensued.

You may also want to contact the estate of John Steinbeck to demand they remove the word "Mice" from the title of "Of Mice and Men."

    2. They are just plain, old-fashioned assholes.

Then again, perhaps I'm being naive. I'm curious to see if you have any evidence to support this.

Look at the home entertainment market. The plasma screen TV is essentially a big monitor, and offers high enough resolution and sharpness to display text and anything else you might like. The PC is slowly morphing into a Home Entertainment Centre; the X-Box itself is just a glorified PC! It's already pretty common to walk into a well equipped Home Theatre room and see a wireless keyboard and mouse on the coffee table. In short: convergence is going to make the distinction between consoles and PC's meaningless. As it stands, the only difference left between the two is the position in which you sit, and how close the screen is to your face.
