  1. Unabomber? on Why Do So Many Terrorists Have Engineering Degrees · · Score: 1

Theodore Kaczynski was a mathematician, Western educated, and by all accounts a model student and young academic. Was the CIA involved in turning him into a manic individual ? There is something about the obsessive nature that a person needs to succeed in science, engineering or maths that is part of the terrorist psyche.

  2. That's a lot of rigs dude! on $25,000 of Communications Gear In a $500 Car · · Score: 1

What has been seen cannot be unseen. That car reminds me of the Homer Simpson bit where he plugs in every accessory into the car. I'd get pretty nervous leaving that much expensive kit in the car, it might get stolen. However a thief could only use it to talk to radio amateurs. I see no Morse key. For more "whackers" check out http://www.hamsexy.com/ it does poke fun at a hobby that can take its self too seriously some times

  3. The future of space business on SpaceX Boosts Malaysian Satellite Into Orbit · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wow, that video of the launch was awesome! There's still stuff that can make my jaw drop. Its a testament to the technical prowess of the USA and the engineers working at SpaceX, this really is the future. On a side note, with more commerical players sucessfully entering the low earth orbit launch business, space junk pollution will come a real big problem in the next decade. Time to launch a space garbage truck!

  4. Re:That's incredible on Listen to the Sky · · Score: 1, Troll

The guy thats doing this is a failed architec, he teaches now.check out http://www.haque.co.uk/ for the most pretentious arty twaddle you've ever seen in you life. Well if its a windy night, it would be fun to see it all braking its guy rope and seeing it drift into the flight path over Heathrow airport. A quick quote from his website "To chart this unexplored territory, shortly before dusk in Spring 2004 the Sky Ear structure will be released from its ground moorings and slowly float up into the sky sampling the electromagnetic spectrum as it rises, rather like a vertical radar sweep." The rf spectrum is hardly unexplored, over used a crowded maybe. The various government agencies constanly monitor all parts of the RF spectrum.

  5. who will play the Master ? on New Dr Who Actor Named · · Score: 3, Interesting

Arch villans. The Dr must be pitted against a worthy advisory, the Master. He really was very evil, in fact the Master invented evil. The chaps in the shiny suits and trash cans on wheels never really scared me at all, the Master on the other hand was equipped with a TARDIS that actually worked and all the knowledge of a time lord. The Master was Moriarty to The Doctors Sherlock Holmes, and or course he wanted to rule the known universe.

  6. creepy head! on Lost Doctor Who Episode Found · · Score: 1

shudder, that creepy head thing again.
Early Dr Who was bloody hilarious, I mean giant bumble bee people. I nearly peed my pants when I saw that on UK Gold (retro cable tv channel insb the UK)

  7. open design scientific instruments on Build Your Own Scanning Tunneling Microscope · · Score: 2, Informative

I think a similar thing was done with robots that carried out part of the human genenome project. Sorry I forget the group that put the plans out on web. Any how, there is certianly a demand for scientific instruments that can be assembled for relatively low cost. A good thing for universities in developing countries, that can't afford the cost of brand new equipment. I saw a pH meter made of the carbon rods from D size cells made in India. A lot of labs in developing countries either buy second hand equipment, but just like every thing else there is planned obsolesence, and parts get hard to find or make.

  8. Sir TBL on Tim Berners-Lee Attains Knighthood · · Score: 2, Insightful

Well I wonder if TBL will ever be asked to go on a crusade to the holy land or re-claim brittany from those Frenchies. Theres certainly no damsels in distress, imprisoned in a tower by an evil uncle. There are no dragons left to slay and the holy grail got sold on ebay for $5.99 Sorry but a real knight belongs in our stories and myths. The highest honor we can give TBL is not a three letter prefix Sir, but the recogniton that his work, kick started all this web stuff and his ideas for the furture of the web are more important than making a fast buck.

  9. Ben Franklin reloaded on The Expensive Hobby Of Kite Aerial Photography · · Score: 1

Try taking a photo of being struck by lightning, however does require flying a kite a night in an electrical storm, well it could be the next adrenalin junkie fix to replace base jumping.

  10. Re:$5,000 a test?! on Measuring Pollution In Humans · · Score: 3, Informative

Testing 116 different chemicals is hard work, for a start not all the chemicals can be tested on one instrument, for instance they looked a uranium and other heavy metals, a inductively coupled Mass spectrometer isn't cheap 250,0000 and the mercury well that is tested on a special instrument to check for low levels. The organic molecules need to be tested on tandem LC mass spctrometers and also head space GC-MS. An enviromental lab could well be kitted out wil up to $2-5 million US dollars worth of the latest equipment, not to mention staff and other support resources.

  11. If Arnie ran Mars..... on Holding On To Hope For Beagle 2 · · Score: -1, Redundant

    1. Vote Arnie for the first Martian Emporer.
    2. Then he'll divert all Californian wealth into building a giant nucear powered rocket to Mars.
    3. The fallout from the Orion nuclear rocket kills off all the trees which stops thoses pesky forest fires in San Diego.
    4. Arnie lands on Mars, and finds cave with big nuke generator. He puts his hand on big three fingered console.
    5. Taxes Air
    6. Profit!
