  1. Democratic Media on The Media in 2014 · · Score: 1

If politicians are the inevitiable side effect of democracy then doesn't it make sense that a democratic media would create equally hideous monsters? That's the question he asks but he doesn't try to answer it. If news is as customized as he proposes then it doesn't make sense to classify news as one thing. My media would be totally different from someone else's just like people today have the choice to read The Globe and other tabloids. Media doesn't shape society as much as it is a reflection of our current level of awareness. Fix the education system and the media landscape will magically transform in 10 - 15 years. It's too bad people don't vote for the long term benefit of society.

  12. Graphics Issue on BZFlag goes Platinum · · Score: 3, Informative

There was an attempt to fork Bzflag and use an updated graphics engine called OGRE but it turns out that the bzflag code isn't very modular so it has stalled.

I think open source games are on the cusp of a major breakthrough because of the maturation of third party graphics and physics engines like OGRE and ODE. I'm helping with a project that has been running for a little under a year and we've released a pre-alpha already because we didn't re-invent the wheel.

I think a lot of people go into these open source game projects without an understanding of the amount of work involved. It's sad because a lot of great ideas and great code are lost when developers become overwhelmed with the details. Flight/driving simulators are much easier to create in an open source environment because of the lack of a plot requirement so you'll probably see them first. My point is that as soon as flegling OSS game devs look to open source middleware first then hand code things only when necessary, we'll see a lot of great stuff in a very short amount of time. An entertainment singularity :) Don't take my word for it though...

Unlike a world war, though, civilization cannot get back to normal afterwards, as much of the landscape will have been drowned, effectively forever. We consider the threat to be imminent, the timescale of the global changes seeming likely to include the lifespans of our children."

If we really are just the smartest monkeys (and it looks like we are) then it stands to reason that we are nowhere near intelligent enough as a species to manage a global ecosystem and sustain economic growth at the same time. I'm a believer in the idea that everybody, even the great leaders of yore, were fallable humans with specific talents so we can't assume that they'll just take care of it. I hope this article is a wakeup call because I'm sure as hell not having kids until someone comes up with a plan. Not having kids is bad for the economy though and the economy runs on hydrocarbons so maybe that's a good thing.

Maybe that international consortium of countries pursuing fusion will pull their thumbs out when a big chunk of the coldest continent slides into the ocean. I think the best application would be the ability to wire your brain directly into another person's to express ideas without waiting for our mouths to do the work. There is a gob of tissue that connects the left and right sides of the brain that when cut leads to all sorts of weird problems.

If we can borrow the right side of someones brain for an art school assignment then wouldn't humanity start to look a lot like open source software? We own our brains now, they're proprietary. What happens when we connect a bunch together? What happens to "self"? Are we the final Beowulf joke?
