  1. Why doesn't apple port to Intel? on Confessions of a Mac OS X User · · Score: 0, Troll

Just curious by why doesn't apple port OSX to the intel platform? The only reason I can think of is that they're concerned they will lose out on hardware sales. But if OSX was available for other types of hardware I would give it a try and maybe even switch. End result is, if MacOS is as good as they say, more people would switch to it which would probably lead to more hardware sales.

  2. Bad Batch on Confessions of a Mac OS X User · · Score: 1
It can happen to any vendor. I've seen the same with IBM laptops. A bunch of my friends ordered them at the same time and all of them had to send them away for servicing many times. If you ask me, sometimes they get a batch of bad components or whatever and they don't pick up on it. Then its a crapshoot when you return your laptop for servicing if you'll get another crappy board.

Personally i've used Toshiba, Dell and compaq laptops and they have all been good for me. (I even dropped the dell on a concrete floor from 3.5 feet, cracked the case a little but still worked like a charm. Long story but it involved me with no socks, the laptop power cord and an urgent nature call.)

But anyways, back to the point... Laptops aren't known for their reliability and when something goes wrong, since its all integrated they might as well give you a new one. You've lucked out (so have I), lets hope that doesn't change.

  4. The Biggest challenge is finding an idea on Unemployed? Why Not Start a Software Company? · · Score: 1
Forget business plans, forget financing, first you have to come up with an idea. Sure, there may be tons of software that needs to be written but unless you've had exposure in these areas then the software you create isn't going to be that good.

Sure, i'd love to write some code from biotech but I wouldn't have a clue where to start. Sure, with research I might be able to find something that people may want but it would take alot of ramp up to even consider writing an app.

Your best bet is to write something in the area your very familiar with and since you were previously employed chances are there are already apps in that area.

For every 100 ideas theres probably only a handfull of usefull/needed apps. How do you pick the right one? Your betting alot on something that may not return anything.

As with inventing the best way to get 'rich' is to solve a problem thats you've personally run into. The trick is, realizing that this is a common problem that may affect alot of people.

For instance, not computer related but in my area there was a couple that had a dog. I don't remember the exact details but they needed to muzzle him but the on the shelf muzzles didn't work, so they created their own. Soon after, they realized others had the same issue and they started selling them at a flea market. A couple of years later a guy stumbled upon them and wanted to license the product from them. Plans are for millions of these units to be made and sold around the world and they get a few bucks a pop. Needless to say, they can retire quite confortably now.

Usually its the simple solutions that reap the greatest returns. How many times have you been watching an infomercial or saw a product at the store and thought, why didn't I think of that?

A tech related example, remember that Y2K program that checked to see if PC's were Y2K Compliant? If I recall correctly Dell licensed it from a guy and he got a 1$ for every PC it was put on... Several hundred thousand.

Anyways, i'd love to develope my own software (even tho i'm a DBA :).. Anyone have some ideas they'd like to share?

There was an article on yahoo yesterday talking about the latest Mar's rover. One of the scientists said that it would take 30 days to do something that an astronaut could do in 1 day. Sure, robotic probes are the first step to colonizing a planet.. It would provide information on the conditions and hopefully better prepare for a manned mission. But at some point were going to have to put real thinking people up there, otherwise its going to be hundreds of years before we make any significant progress. It took them 8 hours or so the other day just to move the probe 10 feet. Also, we are eating up earths resources at an alarming rate.. Currently in the United States we produce 2 pounds of plastic for every 1 pound of human in a single year. We going to need to harvest other planets/asteroids for their resources at some point. Having the entire human race living on a single planet is like having all your eggs in a single basket.... Would it surprise anyone if we destroyed the world through polution or war? How about natural disasters? An asteroid could hit any day, another ice age.. who knows? I'd feel better about the human race suriving if we were spread across the universe/galaxy, etc. We also need to go for the most basic reasons.. Human beings are explorers and personally i'd give my left nut to be on a one way mission to mars. That would be an adventure of a lifetime.

Supporting their software on Linux also benefits the OS community. Oracle is a 1 point of contact for any problems on the support linux platforms. Thats a HUGE deal for companies considering moving to Linux. No matter what the problem is on a linux server Oracle will support you.

As for actual code here's a quote from an article:

Officials at the OracleWorld conference here last week said Oracle will continue to contribute development work and code in areas such as management, clustering and enterprise database to the open-source and Linux community in association with companies such as Red Hat and SuSE Linux A.G.
