If all your doing is simple DML then your not using a database to its full potential. I've been a DBA for 7 years now, a few of those years spent in development shops. Lets take Oracle for example, there are tons of features in there to help performance, managability, etc and alot of them are unique to Oracle.

Database independance is all fine and dandy but its a trade off. Your trading for time to market. ie, if your application is complex then your going to end up writing features that are probably available in the database. Thus, your time to market will be longer. I'm not talking about simple applications here.

At one location, even tho all of our customers would have been using Oracle as the backend, management decided to write a few features that were already available in Oracle. You don't want to know how much they expected this to cost or how long it would take.

Another thing to keep in mind is market share.. Why develop for a database that has less than 10% market share? If you take Oracle, SqlServer and DB2 you have over 90% of the market covered. (Alot of DMS's comprise of the remaining 10%.) Personally, if I was a developer, i'd worry about getting my app to work with those databases first. I wouldn't be too concerned with a database that has a 1% market share, opensource or not.

Your still missing the point and its obvious you don't have much real world experience in this area. Also, you can't compare how long it takes postgresql to Oracle in the time it takes to come out with a fix without knowing their testing procedures.

If you had much experience in the real world you would understand what i'm trying to say. Yeah, i'd love to use more opensource, GPL'd software but I love having a job that much more. More and more so in the corporate IT world its about covering your ass because there are plenty of people out there that like making others look bad. And its getting worse day by day. 5 years ago I didn't see nearly as much internal finger pointing as I do now.

But hey, go ahead, choose what you want but becareful it doesn't bite you in the ass. But hey, at least i'm brave enough not to post anonymously.

And as for bugs in Oracle (core rdbms).. I don't recall any incidents in the past 6 years that were show stoppers and I had to install an emergency patch. And I have worked with _alot_ of large database infrastructures. If it is a critical bug, you can be sure there are people working behind the scenes 24x7 to get it resolved and put out a once off patch. I don't have any production experience with postgresql so I can't comment there.

Yikes, thats a long follow up. In general I agree with almost everything you said, but as you state, your not a DBA. There is a market for a high end databases and advanced features that opensource is years away from solving. (In the database arena anyways..) Sure,t here are alot of apps that would run great on mysql or postgresql.

Also, in terms of support, its not an issue of suing someone if something blows up. Its about covering your ass. Yes, its all in the mind but its easier to blame the problem on a bug in Oracle than one in postgresql. When your working with mission critical databases, you don't want to be the fall guy, trust me.

  13. Oracle vs mysql vs postgresql on Dreamweaver MX, Flash MX With CrossOver Office · · Score: 1
First of all, let me say i'm a DBA. Second, let me say that I haven't seen too many databases that couldn't run on opensource databases like mysql and postgresql. Most apps only require the basic's and mysql/postgresql has them covered.

I think its too early to predict the demise of companies like Oracle, MS's SQL Server and IBM's DB2. For the forseeable future (I hate to say 'always') there will be a market for high end databases for mission critical apps like banks and other financial systems. And there will always be companies than feel 'safer' with the support offered by said companies. Its easier (CYA) to blame an Oracle or a Microsoft than an opensource solution. Who do you point a finger at if postgresql crashes (not saying it will, just an example) and your company fails to meet quarter end? I know who your boss will be pointing his finger at....

One thing I don't understand is why more people are opting for mysql over postgresql. I looked into both for a small home project about 6 months ago and postgresql was the clear leader. Mysql was missing some key features that I think alot of apps use or it would be at least an inconvience to get around.

I also think, most people, like myself are sick of 'leasing' software and tired of upgrading every couple of years. Really, what does the latest and greatest MS Word do that I couldn't do in WP 5.1? :)

Look at the belt realestate a camera, phone and PDA takes up. Adding the capabilites of a phone to a PDA probably isn't going to increase the PDA's size significantly at all. The benefit is, I don't have to carry a second device.

I'll still have my digital camera for good pictures but i'd love to have a tiny 1 megapixel camera that I could carry around in my pants pocket to capture spontaneous moments. Since I always carry my PDA, i'll be all set.

Its obvious that people who make comments like 'crappy camera' don't really use theirs. Because if they did, they would realize that there plenty of occasions that they don't have it handy to capture spontaneous situations. Or, maybe they just don't have any friends/family/kids.

Currently I always carry my phone and my PDA. This smart phone looks alot smaller than 2 of these put together and it has a toy (KEYWORD) camera in it. The pictures will only look decent at a 4x6 but hell, thats better than nothing.

My phone has some PDAish features in it and its internal capable but I don't use them. Why? Because the screen is too damn small and useless. I want a PDA that has a phone built into it that I can read a decent size email or surf to a webpage without giving me an aneurism!

Yeah, it might not be the best camera, or the best PDA but i'm sure it will do more than enough and i'll certainly use it more than the one I have now.

Better than nothing. Sure, my 5 megapixel camera would take a better picture but I always carry my phone and PDA but not my camera.

I won't be buying another PDA until Internet connectivity is reasonably priced and available. I want to be able to check my mail, surf the web from anywhere and until that happens I don't think the sales of PDA's and smartphones are really going to take off.

I must say, I was rather disappointed with the tone of the article. If this was, say, Microsoft persuing a company who had violated their licenses, it would probably only be granted a small mention in the press. The basic fact is when companies decide to use software published under the GPL, then they have to abide by the terms of that license. If they are distributing their final product then they _have_ to provide the source as well.. In exchange they are saved alot of money by not having to buy or develope said software. Why is that so hard to understand? Its a mutually beneficial partnership. (I'm sure this doesn't need to be said, but companies who use GPL software, make modifications but dont' distribute said software doesn't have to publish the source.) Personally, i'm rather disappointed that a magazine as respectable as Forbes is taking pot shots at Linux. Its just another example of ignorance that we, as Linux advocates, have to work through.
