  1. Why doesn't PostgreSQL get more press? on PostgreSQL Beta Testers Needed · · Score: 1
A little whiles back I looked into open source databases for a little side project. I specifically looked at mySql and PostgreSQL. In the end I choose PostgreSQL for a number of reason I won't get into here.

Lately whenever I see articles concerning databases I rarely ever see postgreSQL in there but I see mySql more and more often. Why is mySql so popular? Is it that the name mySql sounds better than postgreSql?

But from my experience, which is rather limited, i've run into different bugs on different OS's because of problems in the jre.

When you guys write java applications/applets, do you state they need a certain version in order to run it? I coded a simple web application that worked well within Jdeveloper but when I loaded it into tomcat I had a ton of trouble with different browsers and I can only assume that if I actually made this accessible to the internet i'd have a dozen different browsers and versions of the jre trying to connect.

How do you get past those issues?

And also, i've had tons of GUI issues between linux and windows. For some reason the fonts used in linux are larger and it makes the whole thing look messy.

I haven't read up on mysql lately but i'd double check and make sure that isn't an issue for you before you make a jump.

IMO OSS is fine for internal low-key applications. But for production financial systems I wouldn't bet my career on an OSS solution. The biggest reason is support. While OSS databases may have more 'developers' they don't have the same level of support as say Oracle. If I have a P1 problem, I can get a technician working on it 24x7 until its resolved. Sure, i'm sure there are companies that may offer support for OSS databases but like I said, i'm not going to bet my career on them.

There could also be financial arrangements within the level of service contracts.. I doubt you'll see anyone in the OSS community providing that.

Besides slashdot, I haven't run into many people pushing OSS software (including linux) and i've worked for a couple of large IT organizations. Unfortunately, there seems to be too many 'zealots' out there ready to push their own preference of software without actually looking at the issues objectively. I see it everyday here at work. The oracle people push Oracle, the microsoft people push SQL Server, the OSS people (haven't run into any of those yet..).

I agree but I also am of the view point that most software should be free for home use. Take Oracle for example, you can download all their software for personal non-commercial use. Basically so you can play around and learn the software.

Now say said person who downloaded the software was working in a company and their dept. needed a database. Well, this guy is almost certainly going to recommend using Oracle because that is what he is familiar with.

Same can be said for graphic design, development environments, etc.. I would say most of the money is getting big companies to buy and license your software, not home users. (I realize that some software is aimed at home users, thats another story..)

There have been strides with respect to multiplayer capabilities but lately there is no depth to games. Games are released buggy and before they are ready, etc.

What did EQ have over muds? Only graphics, there are many muds out there which provide a more enriched user experience. Its just people these days like eye candy and have to be forced to use their imagination.

Multiplayer isn't what its cracked up to be anyways. Take Command and Conquer Generals and try playing a decent, fair game. Impossible. In 90% of the games the other person cheats or if you start to win they drop to avoid affecting their stats. There are so many arseholes playing online games nowadays that i'd soon play single player missions/games or just network with my friends.

The game industry is officially big business and there doesn't seem to be the same pride/effort put into the products. They are continuously rushed out the door before effectively tested or complete. MMORPGS are perfect examples, ex Asheron's Call2. Its been almost 10 months and they still don't have in game chat working! A feature is 'monthly content updates' but thats just so a game can be pushed out before its ready. I can't believe some people fall for that marketing. Look at EQ, one zone was so hard that they didn't expect players to get to a certain area in it so they didn't even bother completeing it.

Sure, there have been some breakthrough games but how many games out there today differentiate from games in the early 90's? With respect to graphics and multiplayer sure, but most are old rehashes with some slight twists and alot are no where near as indepth.

  24. Its lack of imagination on Computer Expectations of Today, and a Decade Hence? · · Score: 1

How many people, especially teenagers do you see playing pen and paper RPG's these days? I used to play them all the time in my teens but I don't know of any D&D style groups in my area. So while programming/technology has gotten better, these guys haven't been working their imagination.

As per the question asked in the article. What do I expect? I expect applications to run faster than they did on my previous computer. Lately it seems that after every upgrade things don't seem to be much faster. (ie desktop applications, word, ie, netscape, etc..)

I haven't timed it (I should haul out my old 486) but I bet WP 6.0 on an old 486 with 16megs of ram will start up just as fast as word on an athlon 2000 with 128megs of ram. Its rediculus.. I upgraded my computer at Xmas and games are faster but I don't see any different on the desktop.
