Well, I would say a change like this to an environment such as an MMORPG would be pretty drastic and could be detremental.. There's no telling what the side affects are yet.. Sony many be opening new servers as a testbed.. I wouldn't be surprised to hear this being implemented in all servers (and their future titles) in 6 months.
This secure service will allow EverQuest II players on specific servers to buy and sell the right to use items, coin and characters. To be clear, all we are doing is facilitating these transactions. We are NOT in the business of selling virtual goods ourselves.
Basically what they are saying is half their time is spent resolving issues from failed transactions so there are support cost savings in putting in an effective forsale/trade system. They won't be selling items themselves, only help facilitate the trade.
Personally I have no trouble with players selling virtual items but I would not support the company doing it. Players should have equal opportunity to get the same items with their monthly fee. But hey, I may be in the minority of people who only want to pay a monthly fee.
there has to be something said about fair competition. There is a reason why doing business in the west is more expensive.. Labour and Environmental laws just to name 2.
I have no problems competing with industries half way around the world if its fair. IMHO tariffs should be place on any goods coming in from other countries that don't meet our same standards. If at the end their products are still cheaper then i'll agree we have to revise our business practices.
Personally, I think Sony hit the nail on the head with the PSP allowing it to do other things like watch movies, etc.
Personally, while I think they are cool, i'm not going to buy one unless they open it up more. If i can record TV shows on my PC and then burn them on a UMD disc to watch later on the PSP (say i'm at the doctor, or waiting for the wife shopping, etc) then i'd definately pick on up. But i'm not going to go out and buy a ton of proprietary memory sticks and constantly have to be reformating it to watch a show.
There is a huge potential for the PSP but I don't think sony will take advantage of it. They have already said that their business practices have hurt them in the past... we can always hope they come around.
He hasn't stated anything special to opensource products that are different than buying commercially licensed products.
That means that at some point in the future the market will consolidate and a number of these products will disappear. This may not matter too much if the products are not that important to you, but it certainly does if they are strategic.
You have to consider the above no matter what product you choose whether its opensource or not. If I have 5 products i'm evaluating and one of the companies is on very shakey ground and may not surivive chances are i'm not going to consider it unless it offers something critical that I need that the other products don't.
I agree on one point tho which he eludes to at the end. More and more companies will offer freely licensable products and make their money off of support. Which in my opinion is the way it should be...
Or nucleus... I've been using it for over a year and its pretty stable with lots of plugins. I installed a bunch of blog software before I decided on nucleus.
A couple of questions.. anyone have stats out there on which is the most popular OSS blog software? There don't seem to be many comparisons on the web. I've been considering trying some new software but I don't want to waste time with one that doesn't have a good community behind it.
Does the first line of your post foreshadow your own comments?
There's a reason why you put constraints in a database.. Its much easier to change them there than it is in the code. So it depends on your application on to what extent you will use them.
Honestly, i'd have to say your a troll. Crippling a piece of software (as another user said) and then testing it against another piece of software is a pretty shoddy test. To get a good idea of what you can expect you should tune mysql and oracle to their optimal level on the same hardware and then compare.
Lets take a Ford Escort and drag it versus a Porche...But we modify the porche such that its acceleration and top speed are fixed. By chance the escort wins, does that mean its a faster car? Ok, probably a crappy comparision but you get the idea.
I do have access to both those pieces of software but I wouldn't waste my time doing a test like that.
I guess the point is, your doing extra work on behalf of the database that other RDBMS's provide. Its a complete and utter waste of your time to do transaction logging at the application level.. Its not like you will have to pay for Oracle or DB2.... Other OSS RDBM's provide you with that functionality.
I've been a DBA for 8 years and i've seen countless developers spend days, weeks programming features that are already in the database. I thought developers loved to reuse code but I guess some like to do everything from scratch by themselves.
I dunno, maybe if you had real dba's to tune the DB rather relying on developers supporting it, maybe you would see the same performance out of the 'slower' RDBMS like oracle, DB2, postgresql.
Personally I'd rather rely on transaction logging, integrity being handled by the database.. Why? Because depending on the RDBMS they've been there a long time and pretty stable. Not to slight your skills but your time is probably better off spent on other parts of your code rather than somethings thats been tried, tested and true.
A friend of mine at work took random screen shots while he was doing work and turned them into a slideshow screensaver. One day I went by his desk and assumed he just stepped away for a second until my plans to leave him a nasty message failed when I moved the mouse and a password prompt came up.
Apparently he does it so people think he's working. Fooled me.
I agree.. Mine phone has some nice gouges out of it.. Add to the fact how many times i've drop it on the ground getting out of my car and the holster breaking twice and sending my phone tumbling.. I don't think a HD based MP3 player is going to be a very good idea.. Now the flash one would be another story.
Ignoring this, who the hell is going to pay to download a song to their phone when they have already legally purchased it? I have camera phone and its rediculus how much they charge you to email/upload a 10k picture. To add insult to injury, you pay 100 bucks for a data to go cable and software and the only thing you can do is sync your phone with your contact list. No outlook syncronization, can't upload ringtones, download images. Its a freaking ripoff... At least my company is paying for it.
Unfortunately due to the laws of physics most vehicles on the road won't hear you until its too late. People like to say loud pipes save lives to justify that horrible noise we all have to put up with. Most cars you have to be worried about are coming in the opposite direction and usually turning in front of you.
For the record, I do have a motorcycle... Its not extremely loud (stock pipe) but my neighbour, well, 4 houses away can wake the dead when he starts up in the morning.
Sad thing is, your friends story isn't unique.... Most people scoff at the idea of MMORPG addiction but its mainly because they dont' want to admit they are addicted. Like any addict they will say stuff like "I could quit but I don't want to." Well thats just an excuse. If you can leave a game (or whatever else your addicted to) for a month then your not addicted but how many gamers could?
If you want to read horror stories goto the yahoo group EQ widowers... Its simply astounding at how addicted some people are to MMORPGS. They lose their jobs, their families, their posessions, everything!
I'm not sure how this works in other companies but from my experience QC/QA only guarantees the process is followed. I have yet to see QC pass back a change because there is a flaw, or it doesn't work properly or whatever.
Alot of QC/QA people also aren't very technical, so the only benefit i can see is they take some load off of the technical resources by making sure process is followed, the correct approvals are maintained and manage the over all change control.
What else are they supposed to be doing? I'm not trying to be a troll but i'd like to better understand what their role should be and how it works in other companies.
I'm curious how they gather these viewer statistics? Is it only based on viewers in the US? I find it hard to believe that there are less than 3 million people watching theses shows across the globe.
I'll voice my support for Enterprise as well.. This season, is by far the best one i've seen yet.. The reason I like it, is because the episodes are more closly intertwined. Last season there were a couple of shows that deviated slightly from the main storyline but the overall theme seemed to be better handled than voyager.
In voyager we knew they were trying to get back home but alot of the stories had nothing to do with it.
Anyways, I hope the fans save it. I'll certainly miss it.
I've been floating around the IT circuit for about 8 years now and I don't think i've ever had a truely exciting job. Can anyone honestly say here that their job is exciting?
I guess it depends on the company but most companies these days are too conservative to make any bold moves. A few weeks ago it took me 6 hours to get approval to push something to production that only took 30 seconds to implement and would not have any impact to users. SOX (Sarbane-Oxley) has really put moral in the tanker for anyone that works with financial systems. The red tape in IT these days is simply incredible.
I'm sure there are some companies out there doing cutting edge research/development or supporting these environments. But quite frankly 99% of them don't.
Also, most of the people I know in IT would have chosen a different career if they had the time back. I loved computers as a hobby but sitting in a cubicle all day, putting up with people that shouldn't be in IT and the red tape is the opposite of exciting.
this isn't for a soccer mom or surfing the net in the food court while the wife is shopping. Its for soldiers, people who are used to carrying around 100 pounds of equipment. I don't think this is going to be that much of a bother for them.
My god, i've never heard a sorry bunch of whiners complain so much before over something like this. I go to blockbuster a fair bit, mostly for the kids and I love this program. With a very busy schedule its very easy to be late a day or two if you have the movie for a week. The late fees add up really quickly.
Maybe they didn't do a great job of explaining the program for customers but blame is a 2 way street here. All their signs refer to the phamplets available at each cash (and throughout the store) which explains the program in detail.
The way it is now, you have around 37 days extra to keep a movie and return it for the same cost as 1 day late fee before the program. I swear to god some people here can complain about anything.
One person above was paying their monthly fee to netflix and kept one of the movies for 3 months. You could have bought the damn movie but you'll complain about blockbuster?
With a rigid structure like the ISS there is no 'give' if an object hits it... But with an 'inflatable' structure maybe it can absorb more of the impact? I'm no engineer but if you punch a wall your going to break your hand. But if you punch one of those inflatable houses that you see at fairs (the ones kids jump around in) your hand is going to sink in.
Obviously an object the size of a quarter traveling at tens of thousands of miles an hour may be a different story but maybe you can design these things so that they are strong enough to absorb the impact long enough to slow it down or 'push' you. Might be a bit bumpy in there but you might have a better chance of survival.
The whole thread is based on people complaining about licensing with dual core chips... Yes, you can toss hardware at an application to improve performance but your not getting the best bang for your buck.... You need to solve the root cause otherwise your just delaying the problem.

I find it strange that someone is denouncing OSS when they themselves develope and distribute freeware...
You know, there are some people out there that have found a way to make money off of support software rather than making their customers pay through the nose for the sofware. If you ask me, thats pure capitalism.

Up in Canada we can't afford roads like that cause we spend all our money on the military. No? Forgive me... Keeping our quebec friends happy. :)
They are going in the _opposite_ direction sherlock!
Even on my bike 500lbs I get tossed around alot on windy days... I wouldn't want to be on this bike if an 18 wheeler passed me on the highway.
how original
