No, not really. Its like going out with a group of friends. You don't just hear the things they say to you, you also hear other people communicate with them. If you really want a communication to be private you do it via private messaging.

I agree though that this is one area that Facebook and all other social network sites could improve themselves by having finer grained control of who could see what wall posts.

Can you honestly say that you go to events that you would not have heard about except over Facebook? That you did not receive any emails, phone calls, or hear any of your friends (in real life) talking about?

Yeah actually that's how I hear about most things first. Then when I see people we might talk about the event, but its a great casual way to organize an event amongst groups of friends. Less intrusive than a phone call or aim. Email could be sort of an alternative, but not as rich.

For most catching up of friends you are right, but you can also discover more common interests than what was possible before through a quick aim chat. You get to listen in on their conversations with other people and see how they interact with their friends and how they react to the days events. I can honestly say that I am now a much closer fired to some people I went through high school with, than when we were in high school.

Ok, I see now what happened. Linus won the technical battle, but wasn't satisfied at Cox's capitulation. Cox wanted to lose the argument with grace, Linus wouldn't let him.

A classic moment in arguing. A sly technique in the midst of an argument when you realize that despite everything you said to the contrary, you are really, really wrong. But, you don't want to admit it and the other person hasn't figured out that you know you're wrong. So you say something deliberately confusing that could be interpreted as supporting your opponent's argument, or your previous one. He assumes you are supporting the same side as ever and continues to hammer the point. You continue to make misleading statements, until you've slowly started to argue his side a little clearer. At this point he's really confused and asks you if you support your original statement, you say that's absurd and would never believe such a stupid thing. He's won, but you don't agree you were ever wrong. Just a "miscommunication" and "we were both right".

My younger brother used to do that to me all the time. Drove me nuts.

Cox -> submits code with a bug in it

Cox -> blames other code, doesn't acknowledge bug
Linus -> blames Cox for ignoring bug
Cox -> states that he's been working hard to fix bug, not easy. He quits.

Can't tell from the selected communication, how much Cox had ignored the bug, blaming other people or if he explained in a email the complications of the fix.

Tough to judge, based on the limited communication presented in public.

Q:Was the discovery of GPL'ed code made before or after MS released the code?
A: Before. They were approached silently and with out fan fare by Novell and correct the situation by releasing all of the code for the driver.

Q:Was the GPL'ed code able to be licensed through other means?
A:Well, you only have so many choices when you write a driver for Linux. I'm sure they could have argued like others have that their driver was not a derivative work of Linux, and just submitted a binary blob. The fact that they tried to have it both ways indicates that they didn't think this was the case.

Q:Is there a possibility they decided to make this GPL'ed code a while ago and decided to link to other GPL'ed code because of this?
A: Probably not. The driver was all their code, they specifically chose to put the GPL on only part of it.
