Strangely enough, most of the people who did manage to have the resources to get out were the white folks. When you take the fact that the government rescue effort was abysmal at best and didn't really get rolling until the airwaves were blanketed by some pretty ugly imagery, some might even speculate that 'George Bush hates black people'. Of course I would never ascribe to malice what can be explained by incompetence. All the same, it seems like a sad state of affairs when the preferable alternative is multiple levels of sheer incompetence.
Well, I don't see what George Bush has to do with Katrina. It is not the Federal Governments responsibility to take care of local disasters. The Federal Government may providing funding to local agencies should they decide the disaster warrants it, which they did. Then the local agencies and local governments are expected to take care of the issue. How can we criticize Bush for not doing enough when he was not required to do anything at all? There was no Federal aid for the Great Chicago Fire which also affected many poor people, most of them white. Nobody seems to have faulted Grant for not having the Federal Government rebuild Chicago.

All Comcast has to do is show that cable TV and set top boxes are not separate products, and *poof* the antitrust suit disappears.
We are in a bit of a Catch-22 here. Because all of the cable companies (not just comcast) require you to rent a box from them in order to have their digital or high definition service, technology companies know that there is very little money to be made in making a standalone box. Then, because there are few alternatives, cable companies can claim that the hardware is part of the service.
For Christmas, we got a second HDTV. In order to get high definition service to that TV, I have to rent another box from Cox, or get a DVR with tuner that is compatible with Cox. When I went looking, I found three groups of choices. The Tivo group, which I was lead to believe would require a separate monthly subscription fee which I am not interested in because I just want to be able to change channels and record shows. The second group was DirectTV, which I was lead to believe is not compatible with Cox, and the third group was really just a single stand alone DVR player that I was able to find on Amazon. Unfortunately, on this one, you could not record while watching another show, so that pretty much eliminated that. There were also some Scientific Atlantica DVRs of the same model that Cox rents, but from what I read, retailers are not allowed to sell these to consumers and of the two reviews I could find for this product, one indicated that the cable company listed its serial number as a stolen unit and he was fortunate to be able to send it back and get his money back. The other indicated that he never received the unit, but the seller did eventually give his money back.
So, essentially, by having anti-competitive agreements in place, cable companies are able to stifle competition and can thus show that the hardware and the service are a package.

Now, if they would like to compensate you for all of that training, plus pay for you to learn another industry and compensate you for setting your experience clock back to you, that would be fine.

I came home late the other night and as I got out of the car I heard the magpie, I looked up and spotted my "dumb" magpie sitting on top of the street light stuffing his face with moths and beetles that were swarming around the light.
On the vein of smart animals, last year I purchased a bug zapper (yes, I know, you are better off buying one for your neighbors than for yourself, but there's no arguing with the missus). The first night, it started zapping bugs and attracting June Bugs. The second night, just after it came on, I noticed 3 or 4 toads showed up and hung out underneath it, gorging themselves on June Bugs that landed underneath it.
For those not familiar with June Bugs, they are the answer to the supposition that Bumblebees shouldn't be able to fly. June Bugs truly can't fly. Which doesn't mean that they don't get up in the air and try. I think if they survive in the long run, they are going to end up having to grow landing gear out of the top side of their body, because they always seem to be upside down on the side walk, or more commonly, drowning in the swimming pool. You can pick one up and throw it in the air, and within two seconds, it will have hit the ground again. It is a miracle of nature that these things have not gone extinct.
