My dad bought one of these, and I have played with it a bit. Its pretty cool, but it is a little "buggy". Sometimes there are glitches in video playback, once in a while the unit just "freezes". You can ssh into it and poke around, but everything is pretty obfuscated and certainly not trivial to figure out enough to know whats wrong with it.
In general, its pretty neat, but not quite good enough to "just work" like you want a set top box to. Nothings worse than having your geeky toy screw up movie night for your friends that just want to watch the movie.
I've used mythtv myself, and mythtv wins hands down for functionality, but you have to fiddle with it to get it to work right. If this new box uses mythtv, and does it well could be very cool indeed.
If you have more questions, I'd be glad to answer them, just shoot me an email.
I'm a system administrator at a small college. While I was in Mexico for a week, with my computer off our network manager recieved a letter that my ip (static) had been sharing the movie "elf".
After some googleing I found that many other schools had recieved similar letters that were bogus. Either referring to ip addresses in ranges that had NEVER been assigned, or other circumstances that made it clear the letters were bogus. Our legal dept says we cant do anything except shut down the machines listsed in these letters because to do otherwise exposes the institution to legal liability.

I wouldnt be surprised if 'click together' mortar racks with single attachment points for electronic control and air for each rack started showing up.
Each launcher could have an id number for the tube firing solenoid and for the igniter for the time fuse. All the launchers on each rack would be tied to one input/controller with the single control point with an high pressure ait hookup.
Sortof like a SCSI enclosure has a different id for every drive, and single SCSI and power connectors on the back.
For a mobile shows, the racks could have pre-assigned locations and numberings, and the fire control program could already be written. When the techs show up, just lay the racks out like you normally would and then run a control and air cable to each one and then load all the shells.
What about barebones shuttle cases? Mine has a heat pipe and a fan on the back of the case for cpu cooling. No intel reatail fan here. Sam goes for most rack mount cases as they have their own cooling solution.
If it is difficult to get them to refund your money, contact your bank instead. Usually they will refund the charge and deal with the investigation themselves just on your word that the charge wasn't authorized.
Last time this happened with my American Express card, they just said "the charge has been reversed, if we need any forther information we will contact you, otherwise consider it taken care of".
Your bank and ultimately visa/mastercard has a lot more leverage with a given buisiness than you. They can threaten to not allow them to process visa/mc/amex transactions if they are the cause of too many fraudulent charges or complaints.

And then it doesn't even walk, let alone have an autocannon...
Maybe statistical analysis can determine if a given image or other medium is possibly hiding information. But if that information is encrypted, doesn't it look like random data without the key? Without knowing the key or even the cipher used to encrypt it... how can it be shown to actually be information?
"That's just random noise/corruption in my images your honor... I dont know what your talking about"
Not necessarily, my buddy just bought a dell notebook, and i can watch a movie at about 170 degrees off... and the colors are all there, just like you are looking straight at it, except of course the skewing because of viewing it an an extreme angle. the colors and contrast and such are all great at the angle, however.
You can order thermite, and lots of other cool things you never would have thought you could order from www.unitednuclear.com
i have done buisiness with them in the past and would highly reccomend them to any other college students with time on your hands =)

there are a few models out there that actually have both an LED and regular bulb. as a member of a search and rescue team i need less light and more battery life about 80% of the time, and the other 20% of the time i want a very bright light. switching to a differnet light or carrying two is not a practical option.
petzl makes a model called the "duo", black diamond makes one called "gemini".
both of these have served me and my coworkers very well, even after being subjected to some serious abuse. not only do you get the best of both worlds, but if either the LED or bulb side of the light dies, you still have a working flashlight.

i am on a search and rescue team. we have at least 4 of these in each truck. some of the newer ones we have bought are the LED model, both are quite very durable and waterproof. the led models last forever on a set of batteries. these light are far superior to any of the "mag-light" types out there for anything but beaning someone over the head with.

exactly. the onyl way this will work is if this is an "i want spam" list... and something tells me that list wont be very big, so companies will just keep doing what they're doing...
in a well designed key system you wont get the master this way, at least not at first.
most large systems with a master key also have several sub-master circles of keys as well, and if they have been designed properly, the first workable cut that you find will only be a sibmaster cut on at least one pin. usually the rest are all designed so that a lower key cannot be filed down to make a master, so hopefully the pins which are reversed (submaster is higher than master) will be the minority.
this does complicate the problem, and potentially add a multiplication factor to the number of tries and keys to file. a design like this will at least make this method take longer, and require that the person attempting it go try the key on more than one door, specifically one that that the submaster doesnt open.
Emergency rooms typically have this type of lock, since the keypad is exposed and you definatly dont want anyone milling around the entrance to be able to pick up the code since it is entered so often. At the ER i worked at, they just rotated the code every once in a while just in case, since so many people knew it.
With this type of system it is impossible to get the code by watching from anywhere but right next to the person entering it.
my sister goes to SPU, and in their new lecture hall, every seat has a lan plug and a power plug.. i thought that was pretty slick.
as far as battery life goes, its getting better. i have an ibm X series, and i can go through a day of class on one battery and only rarely charge it in the middle of the day if i know im going to need it for a project or something later. most classes have at least a few plugs along the wall, so if your battery is low, just sit near one and plug in for an hour or two...
I am a junior in college at the moment, and in the last year or so my school has added 802.11 access points in a few buildings, so i have wireless access in all but one class now. i have always taken noted on a laptop since i can type faster than i write, and dont lose them that way. as a general rule, i still take good notes and pay attention in class. sure mozilla is up in the background, and i may flash over to the other desktop and glance at email every once in a while, but it hardly distracts me from my notes at all. in fact the only time id say i really goof off on the internet in class is those few times when im so tired or burnt out that i wouldnt be paying attention anyway. also, in CS classes for example, it is almost essential to be online in class, so i can get/update/view code that the class is working on at the moment or do a quick google search for something the class is discussing or wants to know about. in those classes almost all of the students bring laptops and are either connected via wireless or wired lan, and make use of their internet connection to contribute more to the class.
maybe its just that wireless internet isnt as much of a novelty to me that makes it such a distraction as it generally is to the non-cs oriented crowd, but either way, the bottom line is wireless in the classroom is a good thing, if students are being distracted by it then they need to learn to focus better.
I'm on call 24x7x365 for my county's search and rescue team. My pager (and my cell phone for that matter) is always on vibrate unless I'm sleeping.
I like seeing movies sometimes too ya know. Throwing Ice at poeple who's electronic toys make noise in the theater seems to work for me.
