f only they were in a position to do so. Most first time or independent developers have a very hard time getting the cash needed to finish a title. Who provides the cash? That's right, the publishers. Not only do they help get that game finished, they also provide marketing and get a game on the store shelves. Because of that, publishers get to be picky about what games they want due to the large amount of developers trying to get their attention.

The reason that developers can't develop a decent industry is because like musicians they can't create a hierarchical structure and unify their company. A huge firm is owned by specific people and when money is earned it is distributed on that basis. Game companies tend to spring from friendships and mutual regard not good business sense, when you start putting a game together you should already know where the profits are going and who owns how much of what.

A better solution might be to have fans fund a game (in advance) but we'd need to get our shit together and that aint gonna happen :(

By now you probably know how easy DirectX makes things, it's pretty increadible actually. OpenGL is not as widely supported and is implemented diffrently by Nvidia and ATI.

Carmack using OpenGL doesn't really say anything, he could probably write a game in COBOL but it doesn't mean it's a good idea for the rest of us. Carmack thinks that the final engine will be produced in the next few years and people will just liscence/develop based on it. That's why he's hammering away in OpenGl because he'd like it to be universal and free.

I'm sure his work has gotten harder and harder since the inception of OpenGL. I don't think OpenGL has been moving forward with other gaming technologies. Course what do I know, maybe DOOM 3 will swing people out of the MS camp.

Sony entered the console market because the other console makers were not being creative enough, they knew 3d was where it's at, now look where they are.

The chances of them demolishing Nintendo with it's pathetic gameboy are pretty good, the psp is going to have PS2 games and the DS, well it'll have 2 screens!

Adding movie support for a proprietary format is going to be easy, it's just allowing a game's intro cutscene to run for 30 min with a little menu :) Easy, the FACT that Nintendo doesn't know anything about their audience anymore is what's going to kill them.

Also as regards earlier conversations involving DVD players in Gamecubes, I know 3 students who purchased consoles in order to have DVD capacity at university. Any arguements that DVD's would make the system more expensive are so ridiculously stupid it's funny, there might be liscencing costs involved with using DVD's (I.P. on Dvd's is owned by japanese company and they guard religiously), but it's a cheaper technology and much easier to obtain in bulk. The value lost by NOT having a dvd player, no media capacity of any kind due to this in the system and NOT using standard sized disks is huge. The only mitigating factor is the lack of piracy, and even that is only so-so.

Well the ATI chipset will be the followup to the ATI9100 (integrated) running on an ATI mobo so costs should be approx $50-75(massive bulk 2k6) at about 9800 pro speeds (integration makes it faster/ dropped support of all unneeded extensions makes it faster and cheaper). 2-6 gigs of flash mem will probably run you about $35, that still leaves dual CPU's which I assume will be produced off whatever surplus silicone IBM has lying around at the end of their processor fab 3 generations from now, prolly in the order of 3800+ x 2. Approx CPU price $55 each. 1 controller $12. You can calculate total price but these are based on current pricing models other than assuming a couple very modest increases over the scheduled release period.

I have a modded Xbox with a 120 gig cap on my game library. I filled it up quickly and am having a really hard time finding new games, I still have several titles I'm not happy with. Xbox owners do realize that there are some weaknesses in our title libraries, the situation has been getting better though.

There is a significant amount of functionality the xbox has is better than the other two systems, as a student I needed a media centre.

The only game I lack is a FPS with good multiplayer split screen support. Xbox has several system killers, KOTOR, NHL:2k4,HALO. Despite this the other systems have clung to life, most of the games listed as great games for the PS2 and GameCube are available for Dreamcast. I suggest a dreamcast Xbox combo for anyone buying a system, Between the ps2 and Gamecube I might pick up a gamecube, it has a couple decent titles, I looked through the Top ten lists and I don't think every gamer should give some of those a try, Metroid Prime is ok but it's not a decent FPS, without AAA fps' I just don't see how gamecube can appeal to gamers over 10.
