    1. Descent - 6 Degrees of freedom done right and one of the first games to push beyond earth normal physics arguably paving the way for other games to move outside reality.

    2. Quake 1 the first fps that allowed for tactical gameplay akin to chess, your skills developed as you played and there was always something more to learn, birth of first game player as idol "Thresh".

Starcraft - Micromanagement and Resource spooging.

Civilization 2 (I just played all 4 it's the best one) - Showing how gaming can make you see the world in meta. Very important because it shows how gaming's active involvement can show you the methods in a system, the better you get the closer your creation approaches reality (hopefully).

    5. Planescape Torment - Why? Very simply, get this get that quests are out and you are really curious about what will happen next unlike ff7 where you merely care about the characters, this suspense and good writing actually allows you to try and predict what will happen, most games penalize you for doing this by being poorly written but Torment's Twists just add to the experience.

Honourable mention: Star Roads - No twitchers on the list you say? Star roads is here because it likens to the days of pong and pac man yet it has aged FAR better than either game (or galaga) it brought in elements like time limits which have become a huge staple, might not be the first game but it's still tonnes of fun, also a great midi soundtrack (Which pushed it past Tetris).

Blu-Ray is a non starter $600 is absurd, I don't care about inflation, they could choose their feature set and try and keep the price down, instead they decided to leverage their interests and build their tech base and launch at a price that doesn't appeal to consumers.

X-Fire, Damn finally Sony does something right, Slashdot in shock.

Basically X-Fire is an alliance between IM software like icq and an amazing game browser like all seeing eye.

It tracks stats and gives other players links they just click on to join the server you're in (find out what song you're listening to etc.

Endorsed by Thresh (The gaming god) it's got a tiny memory footprint to save those precious fps.

It also provides sound so you can ghost (A Form of cheating where dead players tell their friends where other players are allowing them to effectively look through walls and see 2 perspectives at once... look for telltale prefraging when two players have the same clan tag, you'll see it a lot).

    Also what happened to 802.11i?

Maybe I'm being paranoid but is it possible the standard is being delayed for something like Vista or Intels new chipset? Something to package into new machines to ensure people buy them?

Damn you microsoft I now have paranoia that you are negotiating the built in media service with someone like Amazon and are meanwhile negotiating the wireless standard with the isps in order to get users to pay for such and such a wireless service (First three months are free!) and your media box now buys music only from Amazon (Who needs the liscence from Plays for Sure in order to keep operating)...
