  1. Re:HTML on Using gzip As A Spam Filter · · Score: 2, Informative

Another problem with html is that, if there is some level of sophistication on the part of the spammer they can embedd a file (a gif or jpg) in the html that has a unique name that is uniquely associated with your email address. You open the mail, the file is requested (it doesn't even have to exist) but the 404 error or the html get can be logged on the server, and then it is a simple matter of matching the requested files to the email address and you have a list of good email addresses. This is a really useful technique for "closed loop marketing" which is the corporate edition of Spam.

many years ago while in University DCU a computer studies student found a still logged in Vax terminal session belonging to a first year business student, and decided for the hell of it to send a mail to Bill Clinton, where among other things threatened the presidential cat, it was called "socks" I believe. Computer studies student goes back to the bar and continues to drink heavily. Fast forward a couple of weeks and the father of the business student gets a knock on his door. It is the special branch (Irish version of the FBI I guess). After having the story explained to him and having his rather generous offer of tea refused he is finally getting the picture, it is "a federal offense" to threaten the life of the president and they US authorities handed this to their Irish counterparts. College sys admins lock the business student out, and word gets out that the Business student is in deep poo with the ploice, the computer applications student then owns up to it and has his time with the police. Apart from getting around his school trip to "SOVIET RUSSIA" when it still meant something and his little hammer and sickle badge the police believed that he wasn't actually in a position to follow up his threats. And they all lived happily ever after except that

    1) Nobody had told the university president and being asked to comment by the newspaper reporter was not the way to tell him
    2) The rumor was that the Computer applications student was put on a blacklist which would mean never being allowed into the US
    3) His family was put on the same list
    4) As was the business student
    5) And all her family
    6) Socks the cats is fine...

The problem as I see it is as mentioned above is that windows attempts to hide everything, which if you are sitting in front of your high spec P-IV, and you are on a Giga bit LAN to everyone you ever talk to will probably cause you no loss of sleep. The problem is that as well as hiding a lot of the detail, it hides the potential problems.

Picture this, you're marketing guy creates and sends a 300 Meg powerpoint from his Pentium 4 machine to some guy by (dial in) email, who has a crappy old PII running office 97 without multi media flash, blah blah, nothing even suggested to the marketing guy that it would not work. Where windows falls down is that it doesn't even blink when you try to send it by email, and it actively discourages you thinking about, never mind actually checking the file size because it has hid the file in C:\Documents and Settings\usr_id_nothing_to_suggest_that_it_is_anyt hing_to_do_with_you\My Documents\powerpoints, and hell I just sent it by email to Bob without any problems (Bob of course is on our Giga bit LAN..)

What is needed is a bit of cop on, don't just tell people how to do things, but try to tie it back that what implications this will have for the "system" or the big picture.

I have to agree that in a flat/declining market, that it is more about who you know than what. Having said that you are in this for more than getting a good mark in an exam, getting a good mark has to be your first step, without this you will find it difficult to get a job, with out a job you will never get experience, without experience you will never get a job catch 22. The only way to break the loop is to get some exams under your belt and then impress the hell out the people once you have the job
