As well as that what is the advantage to the customer?
I can see how the law of averages works (or works more quickly) for the Merchant, but picture the situation that I buy one item per month for 6 or 7 months @ 50 cents a go, but due to randomness I am included in the 95% of those tokens that are thrown away. Then on the 8th month I get hit by a 10 dollar charge for something that should cost 50 cents, and even assuming I remember I have had 7 freebies, I am still out of pocket. This means I have to keeping buying, and hope that I can get 10 dollars worth of stuff, and then get out before I get hit again for another $10. This then leads to abuse/gambling, how much stuff can I get without getting charged and then get out or quit?

  10. Not clever on the part of the music industry on Uni Students Slammed For Music Swapping · · Score: 2, Insightful

While I am sure that the music industry has to try to recoup what they perceive as lost revenue it is in stark contrast to the approach a lot of other companies use when targeting students. Namely giving there products away for nothing.
Yeah sure at present student live on 10 $/euro/pound/drachma a week, and 98 % of that goes on drink and mind altering substances, but the students of today are the consumers of tomorrow (and the next day and the next day), or that is they will be if they don't get butt f#$@$ked left right and centre for making there spending money go a little further.
Compare the record companies approach to that of the credit card companies (stolen or otherwise). CC companies allow relatively high amounts of abuse on the part of students as the are in it for the long run, they know that the dreadlocked Muppet in front of them now will some day come, cap in hand looking for a credit extension for what ever....

Of course the record companies could say that by the time these "cyber pirates" start to put their money where there mouth is the out-moded business model they now use will be part of every business 101 class on how NOT to do business.

A few posters mentioned why don't the Uni(versities) get behind the students, if their uni is anything like mine (www.dcu.ie) then students are a necessary inconvenience that must be tolerated in order to continue to receive revenue to fund the construction of white elephantesque structures, what seats and space in the library, naw we don't think that is needed.

The latest series seems to consists of exclusively of US teams, although it appears still to be set in the UK (UK number plates on the scrapped cars etc). In addition to shipping the teams in they also appear to ship cars in, like Oldsmobile and the like. The challenges are getting a bit repetitive too, last night (I live in Holland) we had the "build a old fashioned diving bell and get some treasure off the bottom of the pool". Been there done that.

If they are going to repeat these things can we have repeats of the ones that involve building guns and siege weapons, you can never have enough of that.

  15. Proactive approach on New Antitrust Complaint Filed Against Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

While this kind of initiative is always good that is attempting to bring an entity that is (perceived to be) abusing it's monopolistic position, at the end of the day even if the case against Microsoft is proven, it still relies on Microsoft playing ball, and based on the fact that the last time this went to court and went against Microsoft (I think? Right?) it took a hell of a long time to resolve, and then without a clear cut "win" (no one was burned at the stake, or even disemboweled).

What I would propose is that the CCIA (is this a government agency with a stammer?) put a percentage of their allocated budget for this case say, 100% into funding a Europe wide alternative to Microsoft,

with the current chill in the political air I think this should be written in French and called Iraq ;-)

While Linux is pretty cool, open source, felxible, public minded, etc etc, if it is going to go main stream it has to work, full stop. I'm not talking about it working, once you re-compile the nuts off it and spend whatever amount of time tuning it, it has to work for a wide range of people "out of the box" . For fear of getting shot to hell it has to do exactly what M$ does, and then people (those who pay the bills) will buy into it. Add in the value added proposal that it is free-(ish) and that it is open source, and then you will continue to gain market share.
