Putting XFree86 in non free would mean that all software which depends on X would have to move to contrib. That is unacceptable.
But The main issue isn't about freeness, but about that it is not legal to link something like VNC which is GPL with the new license.
You can connect using a persistent connection instead of a short one. with the php function ibase_pconnect. That way your connection will be reused.
The database performs quite well in my experience.
I can conform this. While working everyday with PHP and Firebird (database), it has become harder to search on google. PHP an Mozilla Firebird are often linked.
Sometimes I have to use the word interbase as a substitute. But as the source code seems to have forked permanently now, this trick will be less usefull in the future. And besides, I want Firebird not Interbase!
Ok that would be an option. I think there would be problems running the same image from multiple computers anyway.
Actually I was thinking of something even more complex.. 9 win98 clients with cygwin for terminal server. 1 server. 10 images of win98 on server. Isn't lisening per SEAT? It boils down to the question if you could have win98 installed twice.
And what would happen if someboby logs in from his own computer at home????? aargh. Maybe I will have to read and understand the EULA.
Is it legal to have a windows 98 installed on something like bochs/plex vmware and run it from multiple workstations over xdmcp? with 1 win98 license?
If not, is it legal if you make sure there can be only one instance of win 98 be run at the same time?
This is not correct. Communism is an political system, which according to Marx starts of with a dictotarship from the party. This is to remove all personal property. After this there will be ruling by the people. The plan economy is usual the economic system used by communist countires, but china for example uses two economic systems (Hong Kong). Unfortunatly I haven't heard of a communist state were the goverment is controlled by the people instead of the party, so marx ideas were fully implemented, unless I am wrong.

Well, talking about stopping myths...
SID is the same as unstable, the developement branch.
Testing which I think you confused with unstable is now sarge. It will be the next stable when it is finnished. Packages from unstable flow to testing when there are no dependency problems and critical bugs
Current stable is woody. Woody only gets security updates from debian. This is to ensure that a running system will not break because of an upgrade of software. But there are many backports available of newer software on www.apt-get.org

It seems that the Debian organization's main
purpose is to emulate OpenBSD... They are dedicated to maintaining older, stable versions of software, they use NetBSD as the core of their Debian BSD distro, and now they almost directly copy OpenBSD's recent security efforts.[/quote]
As I have said before, this project is independent from debian. Some work of it might be included in the future, but it's an independent project.
>bad/evil marketing by debian This project is based on debian, but not by debian. It is an independent project. Hence it cannoty be bad/evil marketing by debian.
The discussion shouldn't be if mozilla can legally name it's subproject firebird.
I think it's pretty clear to everyone that using the same name will probably cause all kind of troubles. Think of url's, sourceforge projects, registry setting, package names, user confusion, directory names, explaining what you mean every time you talk about firebird etc. etc. etc.
The only party in this conflict to provide a solution to this is the mozilla crew. You can't reasonably expect the firebird crew to change their name every time someone wants to use it.
I saw the list of votes. Sphinx was the nr 2 with only 7 votes between them. Why not see if this name is without problems and use that, or do a revote? It is not like the mozilla crew loses anything by doing this. It seems the most practical and reasonable solution

Plan: 1. Suggest your own name to the mozilla crew 2. Complain your name has been taken 3. Get a lot of publicity 4... 20. Profit!

I strongly disagree. Use use both projects. There will be a lot of naming conflict problems, and confusion by users.
I think the mozilla crew is the childish party here. Why don't they choose a name that hasn't been taken? How hard can that be? That would avoid all problems.
I would prefer that they don't call it firebird. It is hard these days to ask a question about gentoo on irc, and then you have to explain you mean the file manager.
I use firebird myself, and I swear by it. It is very easy to install, it's portable, it can be embedded in commercial applications for free.
From a technical perspective it's has many features mysql doesn't have. not trolling here, I need them, they are referential integrity, transactions and subqueries.
Only thing that I find missing a bit are some tools to work with it on linux. There are many windows tool though. But I guess that's natural for a project which hasn't been open sourced that long.
Please consider again if you want to leave your computer on just for seti. This is contibuting to global warming. Is that worth a few extra packets?
Of course you can do whatever you do, but running setiathome is at a cost of the enviroment in this way.
>The mozilla license has a paragraph that says: you can convert this license to the GPL and mix it with GPL software legally.
My understanding was some MPL software like Mozilla was dual licensed under the GPL. There is no such clause in the MPL license text.
If there was Sun had to take it out.
Ok. I tried to explain what the reason was for doing exactly that. And I use debian myself too :)
Cheers.
Three times hoorah for sarcasme. Not sure what your problem is. If you don't like it, don't use debian.
Putting XFree86 in non free would mean that all software which depends on X would have to move to contrib. That is unacceptable. But The main issue isn't about freeness, but about that it is not legal to link something like VNC which is GPL with the new license.

I forgot to mention, there is a very powerfull webbased administration tool available for firebird. It's called ibwebadmin.
Firebird (and Interbase) are also supported in PEAR which enables you to write database portable code to a large extent. I use PEAR DB myself.
I can conform this. While working everyday with PHP and Firebird (database), it has become harder to search on google. PHP an Mozilla Firebird are often linked.

He said he considered going back to plain woody.
That sounds to me he already tried vanilla debian once. It's ok not to review all distributions in the world.
>But who knows why he's been subpoenaed.
I think they will ask him questions about the GPL since SCO wants the GPL declared invalid.

Thank you for the reply. I was planning to do this kind of setup on a terminal server.
One more question. We have 10 win98 licenses. If we would have 1 terminal server and 9 clients would it still be illegal?
Is it legal to have a windows 98 installed on something like bochs/plex vmware and run it from multiple workstations over xdmcp? with 1 win98 license? If not, is it legal if you make sure there can be only one instance of win 98 be run at the same time?
I mean never fully implemented

This will not help you against publicity unknown security bugs. Not all security are made public.
But I would prefer standard debian myself despite of this.

This project is based on debian, but not by debian. It is an independent project. Hence it cannoty be bad/evil marketing by debian.
I expained problems in an other comment

Seriously, this is obviously not what happened.
