The fact of the matter is, I don't give a rat's jabutty. If I have to, I'll modify my kernel and Apache code to say it is running a "Non SCO Proprietary OS"

Ponder this, what if MS decides to throw their weight around and support SCO under the table... It could happen and would be a great ploy so MS doesn't look like the bad guy.

Microsoft could easily get rid of Linux this way without having to spend a bunch of money in marketing and "Innovative" technology.

I think Bill is finally getting what he wants. The control of millions of desktops at his fingertips. This would be his own super computer that only allows software to be installed which services his media center in his new home. It's obvious to me.

Seriously though, I think if this really happens, my app development will be totally *NIX and Windows will go out the window and into the shallow end of the gene pool. More feed for the herd.

I think it is time our goverment looked at the H-1B situation again. I think SUN is using the system to it's advantage but should realize there are unemployed techies out there who would take 25 to 50 percent less than what they were making a couple of years ago just to have a job.

I don't mind H-1B's when unemployment numbers are low and there aren't many qualified candidiates available. But right now I have a lot of buddies chomping at the bit for any kind of gigs like SUN has right now.

I would be interested to see how many H-1B's are at M$ and IBM since they both have a big presence in India as well.

  12. Crikey!! on What Fruits Will Reduced R&D Bear For The U.S.? · · Score: 1

Personally, In my opinion if a company hires a foreigner for their R & D and they get shipped out 2 years later, they deserve what they get. What since is it to have someone write code and not have the person around any more.

Consultants are fine, but you better have someone around who has had their toes in the water or you are only asking for trouble down the road or worse yet stuck with $100/hr consultant fees for the next year.

    Short Example:
My company had a project a couple of years ago which required a JAVA XML engine. We needed it fast and our Project Manager hired a consultant from a firm based out of India. Well the first morning the consulant came in and I had the displeasure of meeting him first. The guy didn't speak a lick of English. I had him sit down in the lobby(by pointing) and let my Project Manager get an earful from my boss. Needless to say the consultant didn't type a line of code and the Project Manager was let go. In the end we put our heads together and pressed on with the XML engine.

I have over 10 years in the industry as a coder and not once have I seen where a foreign programmer benefitted the project because of quality of code or cost benefit.

Maybe the big companies should invest some of their R & D in our schools and not some foreign country.... i.e. M$ in India

The truth of the matter is both OS's, *Nix and Windows, have their strengths and their weaknesses. You have to be able to identify how they affect your environment and work around them.

I like the article because I like to see what goes on behind the green curtain. I just wish Bill would let us see if it is a giant or a little person doing all the work.

  17. Re:Well duh on Win2k Cheaper than Linux · · Score: 1

Yah but with Linux, you get the choice of having both the automatic and the manual. If you want a GUI admin tool, you don't need to install X. Webmin works great for most admin tasks on a Linux box and you can turn it off and on when you want to. I'd like to see a five year test with Perfomance and TCO comparisons. I bet Linux would beat Windows handily.
