I agree, but not in the Big Iron implementations. Linux has to become more mature with it's 64-Bit flavor of the kernel before I would choose it over Sun.
My company is a Financial ISV, and when you need to shave milliseconds off of price updates, you want the fastest OS/Hardware possible. The higher investment in a Sun implementation will be payed off by faster execution times - especially when you can load the whole market into memory and not have to worry about memory crapping out.
I'm not saying Linux 64 Bit won't be there in the near future, but right now it doesn't measure up.
Yeah Redhat dropped the ball on this. I would say there were as dumb as MS was with W2K (Web Services enabled by default).
They should disable everything and leave socket connections to localhost only in a default server install. I don't need lpd, sendmail, portmap, etc. enabled for a firewall damn't. Luckily I have a script together which disables all this.
But everyone knows not to plug the network cable in until the box has been locked down right?
Personally, I would rather have a software based firewall (Open Source). Atleast you know the code behind the curtain. With the other guys, you don't know what is going on.
Give it a rest. We all know C and C++ are faster than JAVA and C#. The only reasons why IT chooses either one is because of the time it takes to get the app to Production.
If C or C++ application didn't take as long to develop, then we would all be writing our code in either one.
According to IBM, it's not what's underneath but how "Productive" you are.
Only 400 simultaneous connections... That's not that many.
I've run a lot of different DBMS and find SQL Server to be the best based upon Performance and Price.
My hardware guy and I clustered our database w/ SQL 2000 Enterprise over a year ago and it has only gone down once and that was for maintenance. We spent $65K on the hardware, OS and SQL 2000 licenses. To do the same with Oracle on an x86 platform was going to cost almost $200K
I don't doubt the capabilities of PostGres and MySql, but when your DBMS is doing memory dumps, you don't want to have to scour google for an answer. You want the vendor on the phone as fast as possible and MS, in my exeperience, is very good at phone support when it comes to SQL Server.
Eventually OSS DBMS will catch up,but right now I don't see how u can use replication as a viable clustering alternative.
All I know is the salary once payed to a US citiizen is now going to a foreigner. Who then saves his money, takes it back home with him, and then spends it in his country's economy. This causes our economy to weaken and the foreign country's to strengthen.
Now the company in the U.S. has a short term gain, but three or four quarters down the line they show a net loss because they have too much inventory sitting in their warehouses. All because the American consumer lost his job and can't buy didly squat.
I'm thankful for the job I have and hope those who don't have one, find one soon.
Quake shouldn't be played on a University network. What do you think all the bandwidth is yours and you don't have to share with all the other users who have payed their money as well to surf the net?
Sounds like a selfish college student who rather than playing Quake, Playstation/XBox/Nintendo, etc. should have his/her nose in the books and learn something. Or did you forget your mother and father were paying 10's of thousands of dollars for your FREE EDUCATION.
How am I supposed to new when a web site is using JAVA or Flash when I have never been there before and it automatically loads? Atleast with most sites running Flash, you can skip the intro if you want to.
JAVA has a long way to go before it is close to Flash. Example the runtime for Flash is less than 1 MB. JAVA is atleast 20 times that just to run. There lies the deficiency. It's bloated just to run an applet.
The problem is, they can focus all their attention on how to get around the filters, we on the other had have many hats to wear throughout the day. There simply isn't enough time my friend and the spammers know this.
I for one would be glad to see Flash flushed down the toilet and JAVA put in its rightful place, in the backend.
Keep JAVA out of browsers it simply doesn't belong there. I hate when the JVM takes 15 seconds to load up and 60MB of RAM just to view a f'ing webpage.
I like both KDE and GNOME, they both have their strengths and weaknesses. If I know I'm going to be developing software, then I install KDE, else if a friends needs to browse the internet and read e-mail then GNOME is my choice. And if they don't like either of them, then Windows is the final choice.
Previous responses are right, don't take away choices. No OS is right for everything and neither is one desktop.
What's great about the different versions of the *NIX flavors is you have a choice to install a desktop or not. I would much prefer if MS gave you the choice to install the desktop or not when it comes to their Server OS's. I don't need a GUI Bill, I'm not your average administrator - I am just fine with the shell and my database would enjoy it if you didn't take cycles away from it with your GUI
Most of the culprits out there are earlier Windows machines pre W2K. If you think about it, none of those OS's were designed to be hooked up to the internet or even a lan for that matter. It's all money driven.
Remember when Gates thought the internet wasn't going to be anything and then suddenly IE came out. A trend was set and MS adapted to it and put its iron fist down. Now they realize in order to sell more licenses of their latest version of 0's and 1's, they need to make it more secure especially for businesses which are looking at alternatives.
They are taking a step in the right direction by putting a firewall in their new OS and turning off unneeded services. I just wish they weren't 3 Years behind the *NIX community when it comes to security features installed by default.
If I'm going to put a box out in the open, there is no way I am going to put a Windows box out there for the taking, I simply don't have the time to take care of the damn thing 24/7.
You know if MS would have just taken from the *NIX community and put a simple firewall in their desktop OS's this thing wouldn't have happened.
There is no way I would allow them to automatically update "MY" computer without having knowledge of it. But hey maybe that is because I am a geek.
There are flaws in every OS, we all know that but with all the R & D money MS has, you can't tell me they couldn't port something like ipfilter or ipfwd. I know this wouldn't solve viruses, but the average user should know better to click on an E-Mail from someone they don't know.
If they wan't me to purchase a license, then don't they have to show me the code which impedes on their intelectual property or atleast make it public.
I'm going to stick with my penguin and keep the moat stocked full of other penguins.
Why don't we just put a few drops of blood in the water and have Bruce(IBM) finally devour SCO(Dorie).
I'm sure it is a drop in the bucket for IBM to buy SCO out compared to the lawyer fees they are going to incur in the coming months and maybe even years.
IBM should also think about the potential customers they may lose because AIX is currently "Illegal" right now. I know I wouldn't buy an OS if I knew it was in this state.
Star Wars hasn't been good since Return of the Jedi. I won't spend one cent on a product Lucas has his fingers on. He should let it die instead of trying to make a buck off of the drooling herd.
I can't wait until Triumph get's ahold of the Star Wars nerds this time.

If Windows is so bad, then state your case why. I would like to know the reasons behind your statement

Were any of you under the impression they might have found fossils of organisms not of some rock?
I challenge the idea of calling these fossils. If that is the case, I have a bunch of fossils in my driveway.

With the ability of today's Media Players, why hasn't the industry come up with the ability to download the whole album on a trial basis?
If you want to keep the album, you pay the full price of a regular CD. Otherwise it is either locked or deletes itself.
If this bug is eating up MS bandwidth right now. Main site was down at this time of righting
And I thought Java was the end all language -- sorry C Zealout here i couldn't resist
