  1. Re:Interesteing Problems on Microsoft Ends IE for Mac · · Score: 2, Interesting

There is always Virtual PC 7 for the Mac.

I work on a Power Mac and for the majority of my workflow I can accomplish everything I need in OSX. For those few administrative details and even fewer sites I need to deal with that depend on Windows or IE, Virtual PC comes in handy.

"How is this an issue? Explain to me, please, how having oversight of the people you're supposed to have oversight on is a bad thing?" You must be glad you're smart, but not as smart as Alphas because Alphas work too hard... You do look glum! What you need is a gramme of soma.

"Seriously, do you think a perponderence of people even use the features that Photoshop has over Gimp?"

Yes, the _preponderance_ uses the features not found in the GIMP. This is mostly due to the fact the preponderance of people using the GIMP are not entry level web weenies in need of a better crop tool. The PS native format PSD files are standard for AE, Print design, 3D imports and exports. I can edit my PSD and have live updates posting out to my media work.

Photoshop isn't just the 800lbs gorilla for web, it's the 800lbs gorilla work _all_ media work.
It integrates with just about anything an artist needs to work with. From Greg Martin, to SKG, Photoshop's utilization goes far beyond web work and is flexible enough to accommodate the movie industry, the print industry, advertising, multimedia and web.

Ask any artist, if he can only have two tools to do all his work: video, print, advertising, tv, dv, web... It will be Photoshop and After Effects, hands down.

The GIMP is very good at what it does, but don't go jumping out of your /. jeans thinking you're an Art Director just yet ;)

Cheating online at chess is much less sophisticated.

    1. Open chess program
    2. Input Opponent's move
    3. Chess program offers best possible countermove

You never need to know why the move works, how it will help you win or even when mate is near. The program does it all...

Of course online veterans can spot someone using a program fairly quickly. Some sites even try to discourage it by not letting you move your mouse off the app. If you do your opponent is notified and they can adjourn the game.

Even then, all you would need is a laptop and some creative timing skills. But if you need to cheat at chess that badly, when it doesn't effect any legitimate rank you may have for the "traditional" clubs, you need are in desperate need of getting laid and should put away the computer...

Trinity in leather made us go: "oooohh pretty" I haven't seen this yet, but if these two basic fundamentals are in place, I'm a happy guy. What the hell is the world coming to when grown /.'s can go see a flick about beautiful women in leather, _liking_ computer geeks, and then reading about how the film didn't quite capture the essence of dramatic cinema...

Again - a preset parameter set before the game. Bottom line, set to KILL a computer will only make the best possible move. And around they go.

  9. The flaw of being perfect on Chess Championship: Humans vs. Computer · · Score: 4, Insightful

Chess programs have always been limited by the fact they try to find the most logical move; that leads to the most logical sequence for the current board position.

    They are hardly cheaters.

True they capitalize on mistakes, but if you play Fritz, or Chessmaster on the most diffuclt setting, even a relative novice can make it to move 20. The computer will try to read your opening and play "book" against it.

Whereas if you were to play Kasparov as a relative
novice, I would wager the game would be over, or at the very least you would be in a position that could not be won, by move 15 or so.

If a human sees you make a move that isn't the best possible move, they can switch their whole strategy to be more aggressive. Computers play the board not the person.

So far programs treat Kasparov and a relative novice the same. Knowing no difference aside from how the game develops.

A perfect thing can only make the perfect choice.
Luckily we aren't limited by such trivialites ;)
