Of course the answer to my question was "yes":), and the sad thing that most people here are... I don't know what percentage of people believe in Creation Science, but i'd be willing to wager that it's about the same percentage that go for shit like this. No wonder republicans cater to the more religious people, if someone believes all the bullshit that goes along with christianity, then selling them on other outrageous ideas isn't nearly as hard.
Well, that sounds like a good idea, but think about it..... What if information on Saturn were to fall into the hand of terrorists? Releasing the data into the public domain could be a threat to national security, plus, its not like the project was funded by your tax dollars, oh wait......:P
I've seen it, and its a great episode. I plan on ordering the whole set of faimly guy dvd's once they've all been released in the US. If you've never been to http://www.familyguyfiles.com They have a family guy trivia thing there, pretty good way to waste some of your freetime:)
Didn't read the article, but they might not like this because it could make bootlegging easier/chearper/higher quality/accessible to more people. The RIAA didnt seem to get really pissy about mp3's until napster came along and made it easy for any idiot with a net connection to download mp3's. People had been swapping mp3's on irc for years before napster without very many problems from the RIAA. If this device makes it easier for the average joe to make bootleg recording at concerts then they might want to stop it form being sold. Then again i could be totally off, it was just a thought.:)
Family guy rules, glad to see it got picked up by cartoon network, it was definitely one of the funniest shows i've ever watched. Maybe we'll see some new episodes eventually:)
I'd like to see some statistics on what percentage of people who smoke pot die in accidents compared to people who dont, until you show some numbers your argument is just opinion. That being said there are some activities that aren't such a good idea when you are high, drunk, etc.... like DRIVING. So don't be so quick to blame the substance, maybe blame the person for being a dumbass. How many deaths each year can be attributed to a persons own fucking stupidity?
I live in Pennsylvania, and i had no idea that this had passed here until now, but im not surprised at all. The town I live in has NO crime at all, i leave my car unlocked with the keys in it while i'm at work and don't think twice about it, and alot of people i know NEVER lock their house! But the size of our police force has increased exponentially in the last few years. We have absolutely no need for more than 2 police officers on duty at any given time, the biggest "crime" around here is kids drinking beer. So as a result, the police have nothing to do and pull you over for 59 mph in a 55, or somethign else along those lines. I guess my question is why, when there is no crime do governments (federal/local/state) feel the need to make or enforce ridiculous laws to turn more people into criminals, instead of being happy that there is less violent crime, which is much worse than somebody stealing cable. I havent heard about many laws getting passed lately that have a positive impact on anyone except the people in power. Why doesnt the government put more resources into recycling programs, a better healthcare system, maintaining roads and highways, recognizing people who make positive contributions to their communities, making PC's and internet more accessible to everyone (rural broadband), the list goes on and on. I don't like the direction our country is headed, I dont think I have to explain further (especially on slashdot:P). I really hope that we can stop this sort of thing before it goes too far and we no longer have the power to, after all, it's OUR country. Well, thats my 2 cents, sorry for the rant, I'm waiting on a solaris install:)
really, how hard can it be? I've thought about this before but never did anything about it. I suppose you could write it in perl pretty easily. Why not take it a step further and instead of only converting win32 setting to linux make it so it can move settings between all major OS's. That would be a much larger project than just win32->linux converter, but if it was done right it would be worth it.
right on, lately ide has gotten way better, plus scsi is still shitty expensive. 80gig wd - ~85, 73 gig seagate cheetah - ~290. 300 dollars can get you a decent ide raid card and 2 80gig western digitals. so scsi is pretty much completely pointless for anything but a server.
one 72 gig seagate cheetah:/dev/sda:
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 1.49 seconds = 42.95 MB/sec
I had a 9 drive raid 5 at one time, external scsi tower and all, it was wicked fast, but it was so loud it could wake the dead, ended up trading it for an lcd monitor which was well worth it:)
Had the same problem with yamaha burners, but instead of gettign fucked over by yamaha it was compaq. I ordered a refurbished shitpaq something or other for my sister because she needed a cheap computer. When i got it the burner didnt work, so i called them and sent it back, it took them almost a year to get the thing back to me and then when i did get it, the replacement didnt work either. when I called them back about getting it replaced again, they informed me that it was out of warranty and suggested that i buy a new burner. this post is definitely redundant, along with the 30 other ones that deal with yamaha burners being shitty, but that fact speaks volumes about the quality of their products. plus it feels good to diss compaq and yamaha since the fucked me:P
It could link such different electronic sources as video feeds from airport surveillance cameras, credit card transactions, airline reservations and records of telephone calls. The data would be filtered through software that would constantly seek suspicious patterns
that says it all right there, guilty until proven innocent
better yet, get 6 of them and a promise supertrak sx6000 and run raid 5 that would give you ~600gigs for ~$700. This would be real news if less than $1/mb counting the space you lose to raid 5. Since these things are so big now i would never run them without some kind of redundancy. if i lost 120gigs of data i would be pretty pissed. imho raid 5 should be standard on anything other than low end bargain pc's. just my 2 cents
I was just wondering yesterday how someone would get training in video game development aside from teaching themselves. Glad to see this, and i hope it works out. Hopefully this will mean games will kick even more ass in the near future:)
Well, I looked at the page for the exhaust system and it looks pretty neat, i might even buy one to check it out. So maybe this product being featured on slashdot will boost it's sales, and the story could even possibly be seen as an ad, but i dont mind advertising if it's done right i.e. introducing me to a product i didnt know existed that i might actually want to buy.
Call me crazy, but i think micropayments are a good idea. If the whole thing was standardized.... like maybe you sign up for micro payments with your isp and then have an "account" that you can add money to whenever you want or need to. Then when you go to a pay site you just enter your account number and everything takes care of itself. Of course this means that alot of corporations would have to agree on a standard and not bastardize it(hopefully if you read slashdot you dont need any examples of companies "extending" standards) which is highly unlikely. Yeah, i know it sounds kinda like the.net single sign on thing or whatever it is, i dont really keep up on MS products too much. I guess my point is it looks good on paper but people/corporations being greedy will ruin the whole thing.
just my.02
I agree, paypal is a total mess. I had an account with them a year or so ago and suddenly they stopped accepting my credit card so i was unable to pay for some stuff i bought on ebay and got bad feedback:( Also you have to go though a whole bunch of bullshit to get your credit card validated for your paypay account(or at least thats how it used to be, i haven't used paypal since last spring. Paypal is based on a good idea but it's very poorly implemented. Hope someone comes out with similar service with more security and less hassle.
I've had 2 raid setups, a promise fastrack 100 with 2 80gig WD drives, it was good and fast, even in windows;). The other was an ami megaraid 434 with 128 megs of cache and 9 9.1 gig seagate barracuda's in a raid 5 with a hotspare. IDE raid is definitely cool, worth the relatively small investment, and simple to set up. It took me a while to get the scsi one up but it was INSANELY fast. i guess i really dont have a point, except raid kicks ass, and aside from adding ram, its the best way to speed up your box.
Maybe you could give them all cd's of Knoppix (http://www.knoppix.de). That way if they want they can try it at home without any risk of screwing up their parent's computer. Definitely teach them to install linux or maybe FreeBSD, since knoppix doesnt require any install.
Lisa, in this house we obey the laws of thermodynamics.

I like how they changed nothing about this plan exept for the name, Do they really think we're all that stupid?!

Good one, i should have put that in my original post :)

I don't know if Dell ships boxes with redhat, but they still support it, i got tech support today on a driver conflict in redhat.
