It seems like he'd be less biased if he didn't assume that the windows way of doing things was somehow the correct way of doing things.

I think the ubuntu devs have done a very good job, in that respect, of copying the windows/mac philosophy of usability. Just like with those two platforms it is very easy to use as long as you want to do what the developers want you to do with it in the way they want you to do it. Too bad none of them ever take into account speed or comfort when designing their systems.

And never attribute to incompetence what is clearly not. Diebold makes TONS of other electronic transaction machines (include, probably, your bank's ATM machines) and they don't have these kinds of problems. Perhaps they do it on purpose to give them a cover of incompetence. Perhaps it really is incompetence on the part of the guy they get to write this stuff since whoever is hiring him doesn't care if he's incompetent because they're going to fool with the results anyway and it will only add cover for them.

But CLEARLY this kind of stuff is not because Diebold isn't capable of doing it properly. It's because they explicitly don't want to do it properly.

If we're going to have electronic voting machines, and I don't think that we should (not even optical scan), they should be developed, owned, and maintained by the government. Period.

Madden uses them well if you ignore the pointer functionality, which is VERY difficult to do since you have to use the pointer to select plays. This is one of the most idiotic design decisions I've ever seen. There are more than enough buttons between the remote and nunchuk to select plays in the classic Madden style, making you point at them just makes it slow and annoying.

It isn't helped by the fact that the pointer isn't adjustable in any way and doesn't provide a built-in offset so you have to point DIRECTLY AT the "sensor bar" in order to point at the middle of the screen. It feels similar to what happens on the Wii menu when you sit WAY too close to the screen. This makes changing players excruciating without pointing off screen and using the cycle method, which only goes in one direction since they don't have the second button to reverse cycle as is used on other platforms. I have no idea how Madden got out of test with these issues, which occur regardless of distance from the television. It's the primary reason I played like two games and haven't picked it up since.

The two-on-two mode (that doesn't use the pointer at all) is quite fun however (if you've got the controllers and friends around for it), as the motion-based features are quite enjoyable and work really well.

Additionally, from the article: "I've wondered for a while why Microsoft doesn't just include Word 97 or one of the other out-of-support-lifetime versions of Word as an installable freebie with Windows."

I think we can all agree this guy's opinion is worthless if he's too stupid to realize that microsoft only makes significant amounts of money off of two products and even then only by locking people in to them. Word 97 is still way more than most people need and would kill probably 90% of the ms office revenue if it were given away.

In either case, both windows and Ubuntu suck. Ubuntu has the advantage of an admirable aim (easy to use Linux), they just fail at the implementation.
