If I were shelling out $150 for windows I'd be pissed if that shit were spying on me too. I'm pretty sure the pirated copies of windows don't have windows genuine spyware installed anyway, so the only people who are getting spied on are paying customers and pirates dumb enough to download it.

But I don't care, I run Slackware and think that companies using illegal monopolies should be subject to an old school government breakup.

The play mechanic of MMORPGs just isn't fun. And neither is the "social" aspect of playing a game with hundreds or thousands of the most annoying, immature children on the planet. Sure you could spend unreasonable amounts of time meeting people who aren't douche bags and making "friends". But if the only reason the game is fun is because of your "friends", I'd much rather have my buddies over, drink some beers, and play GameCube.

I really don't mean it disrespectfully, but there are certain types of people who are down with the grinding (yes, PvP in MMORPGs is grinding) and loot questing. Which I guess is fine, to a point (never leaving the house and not working while your gf pays the bills is beyond that point, and yes I know a guy who did that until she tossed him out), but the rest of us just don't find that fun. Some day I'd like to see someone do a study on what makes some people like that style of gameplay and others not. Because one of my best friends has been playing World of Warcraft several hours every day for over two years and I tried it out and lost interest after a few weeks, which is about the shelf life of any of those games for me. Would probably be shorter if I didn't feel like I had to get my money's worth out of a $50 box with an expiration date.

The motivation of "competition" against other players seems to be related to the competition for loot. Somehow competing against other people that might as well be AI, and (in most games, MMORPG or otherwise) would be more entertaining to play against if they were, just isn't entertaining.

  5. Re:Yeah... on Just Let Me Play! · · Score: 4, Insightful

Video Games are GAMES, they're meant to be challenging and competitive. Locked content is part of that, it keeps the game fresh longer and gives you some goals to shoot for.

This of course assumes that a) the locked content in any way adds to the fun of the game, and/or b) that the process of unlocking the content is actually fun. The vast majority of games with unlockable content don't give a good enough incentive to do so because the features add nothing to the game once it has been completed (yippee! I get a new costume for my character when I'm NEVER playing this game again!!!) They also fail at making the tasks actually fun, and a lot of times the tasks are repetitive and boring and serve no other purpose than as a length-extending feature to be plastered onto the back of the box.

The only kind of people who find this fun are those with whatever compulsive collecting impulse people possess who continue to play MMORPGs long after they have ceased to be about anything but collecting loot.

The author definitely has a point, and it's not that games are too hard or that he sucks at them. Most of this "unlockable" content is just garbage filler to add features and playtime (which in most cases is already too long.) The real point is that most games just aren't that fun and adding on crap that makes you replay large portions of them over and over is even less fun.

Are you fucking serious? The way to keep people from coming here looking for illegal work is two fold.

First, make harsh punishments for those caught hiring illegals. Something with real teeth, let's say mandatory ten years in federal "pound-me-in-the-ass" prison before they're eligible for parole.

Second, make it so that there's no incentive to COME here not to exclude them once they pop over the border. If there was a $4/hour minimum wage in Mexico no one would bother coming here to work illegally for basically the same money. We've created this situation ourselves by constantly beating down wages and workers in Central and South America for our own greed.

You're a moron and a fascist to suggest that linking DNA to employment records is anything but insane. Bloomberg should be thrown out of office for even suggesting. It's undemocratic. It's fascist. And if you support it you'd better get the fuck out of my country because the real Americans are getting a bit tired of your bullshit.

The saddest part for me is that they're spending all that money and the games don't look any different than they have the past 5 years. For all the graphical improvement I haven't seen a single one where it is going to change the gameplay, which in most genres has gotten pretty stale.
