  1. This is not a race to the finish line on Gnome 2.0 on Ximian Installations? · · Score: 2

With RH 7.4 in beta now, ximian needs to get in gear.

Ximian should NOT release Gnome just to beat RH7.4 to the finish line. They should release when the product is ready. Initial reports show that Gnome2.0 is almost ready, but still has a few issues to work out.

Plus, I run Ximian Gnome on Solaris, which means that I'll probably get it a month after all you RedHat Weenies^H^H^H^H^H^H^Husers , so I need to be EXTRA patient :)

However, according to various reports,(none of which I can find right now) there are no "Feral" Ferret populations in the USA.

But according to the State of California ferrets can establish ferral populations, and have done so in New Zealand & the UK, among other places.

The Center for Exotic Pest Research at UC Davis said if ferret ownership was to become legal, there is a "high risk" of feral populations.

Groups like Ferets Anonymous say that Ferets cannot survive in the wild and grow in population. This does not make sense. All other domesticated animals; Cats, dogs, rabbits, rats, cows, and even parrots, can and have established feral populations. But some magical force prevents ferrets from breeding outside of a human house? That doesn't add up.

Domestic Ferrets are legal in all continental states including Alaska, and excepting California.

California & Hawaii also have the most to protect.
California has more native plants an animals then any other state, and the second highest percentage of surving native species (Hawaii is first) (Sorry, can't find a link, and I've sold my biology texts).

Indiginous animal populations are already threatened by feral housecats, feral ferrets would only threaten more species.

Tell me, when it comes to protecting the environment, who do you trust more: The Sierra Club, the Audubon Society, the California Department of Fish & Game, and UC Davis ; or Ferrets Anonymous?

but ferrets are starting to look fun too. Which pets are especially trainable? Which will be entertained by (yet not intrusive upon) a typist with a flashing screen in front of them? Is cable-gnawing an issue?

I know several people with ferrets (Including my mother in law).

Ferrets are very cute and very fun, but they don't meet all of your criteria. They are difficult to train to to tricks, they are pretty dirty animals (They don't potty train very well, and often prefer to poop in a dark corner vs in a bed of kitty litter), play with and chew cables (My mother-in-law had one that kept chewing through hot electrical wires), they do not enjoy cages, and they are hyper hyper hyper... nonstop nocturnal action. They do like to cuddle with you, but they are also libel to pee and poop on your bed while you are sleeping.

Also note that ferrets are master escape artists, so if you do get one, make sure that ferral ferrets won't threaten indiginous bird populations in your area (Which is why ferrets are illegal in California & Hawaii, and should remain illegal according to the Audubon Society, the Waterfowl Association, and The Sierra Club).

Something tells me I can do better than simply a dog or a cat."

Don't disregard a dog or cat simply because they are common pets. There are hundreds of millions of dog & cat owners in the world, with good reason: dogs & cats are (usually) intelligent, clean, easy to train, and very loving animals.

I should mention; I've also tried two different those FM transmitter things (Send a radio signal from your portable CD Player to the radio), but they also have serious problems: I get a lound whine from the engine, if I pass by a building or under an underpass, I get wierd static noise, etc. It's like listening to a radio station which fades in an out (But the quality of the sound was pretty good).

A wire that connects the portable CD Player directly to the stereo would be much less noisy then the FM Transmitter thing.

Why do more car stereos NOT have an Auxilliary Input?

The only thing I really want in a car stereo is an Auxillary Input. I want to be able to take my portable CD player, iPod, whatever, and plug it into my car stereo with a minimum of sound quality loss.

I have used one of those Tape Deck inputs
(One end looks like a cassette tape, other end is a stereo jack. Plug the stereo jack into your device, insert the cassette into your tape deck, hit play), on & off for 15 years, but the sound for those things is horrible: all treble, no base. Sound is muffled (This is on 5 different stereos).

Is there some conspiracy against manufacturers putting a simple stereo input jack on the front of my stereo?

MozillaRC3 is still a little slower then NS4.7 in some regards (But it is faster in rendering pages, so the speed trade offs are worth it_, but it is completely usable now. As time goes on, I'm sure some developers will introduce some speed tweaks for we Solaris users.

I didn't realize that a slow NFS would impact Mozilla this much. After all, the NS4.7 cache is on the same NFS drive, so I assumed the NFS impact would be similar.

Plus, I was using RC2, which does not have the option "Edit->Preferences->Advanced->Cache->D isk Cache Folder". (RC3 wasn't available on http://www.mozilla.org/releases until a few days ago, and the netadmins don't allow FTP access, so no ftp.mozilla.org for me. Feng Shui is largely a superstition, but it also has a great practical aspect to it: It is also a great decoration & design strategy.

Houses that follow Feng Shui can look nice, clean and organized: not because of the spiritual aspects, but rather because Feng Shui helps you to reduce the clutter, keep things clean, and to find a place to put the flowerpot and hang the mirror.

Bad analogy. While the supply of air on the planet is finite, it's also constantly being regenerated quicky, on a large scale by the ecosystem.

Oil is also finite, and is being regenerated on a small scale over a period of millions of years.

Its not that we love fossil fuels but currently they are the only economically viable fuel source we have.

Yes, but it's also a heavily subsidized fuel source. Since the birth of the automobile, our governments (especially here in the US) have given away huge amounts of money to the oil industry to fuel research, build oil pipelines, build refineries, etc.

We go to war, remove governements and in the past colonized dozens of countries to maintain a steady supply of oil.
