Some people shouldn't be allowed to carry passengers. Some people shouldn't be allowed to use cellphones while driving. Some people shouldn't be on the road in the 1st place, let alone with a passenger or a phone.
If lots of existing MS Office docs & PDF's need to be indexed, take a look at Perspective. Nice Wiki, easy install (Windows/IIS based meant it was easy to get it running in a largely Windows shop).
It uses the indexing service in Windows to search external documents. This can (I've had mixed results) index PDF's as well as any Office format file.
Results of searches are returned as links straight from the Wiki. Works great for me (much of our doc was already in word/visio etc). As time goes on, more stuff gets documented directly in the Wiki.
May not be the best solution for you but suits us very well.
The most obvious method would be top-down. Stick one block there, then dig away the sand underneath. Slot some more in around the sides..... repeat.... Then level the desert around your new pyramid =)
Someone put effort into this website. Someone is paying for the hosting, bandwidth, etc.
I am paying for my access, my bandwidth. That money doesn't go directly to Slashdot of course, but some of it must eventually end up there. Of course, statistically - most of it ends up in Bill's pocket, even though I don't buy M$.
Big Iron allows multiple virtual machines to run at the same time. This can be done by partitioning the machine near hardware level (LPAR) or with VM (O/S that allows multiple guests. Imagine 5 machines each serving different time zones. Peak load for each machine will vary, but you must be able to cope with the peak. Combine the 5 onto one physical machine & you still have the ability to perform OS maintenance etc seperately, but a single machine could perform the work of the other 5 - just spreading the load. Me - I can't wait for this to become more affordable than the current Z & I series machines.
I prefer to aim for 100 (160km/h) before the end of the onramp. With our measly onramps (GNU Zealand) you need something with 2 wheels... and around 100 ponies between your thighs.
Showing my ignorance yet again (no such appliances where I live). Pirating shows with such a device never entered my feeble mind. I just figure that if you bought it, you own it and anyone that then decides to remotely disable it should get their ass kicked. Of course if you are stealing shows, that changes things a weeee bit. But hacking the box doesn't mean you are a pirate - does it?
If I call my company an 'oppressed minority' trying to 'establish a homeland' then it will still be OK to be a spammer/terrorist and you will just have to suck it down. Even if the aim of my mountains of spam is to ddos your inbox into the sea.
After all - Arafat and the PLO aren't exactly under a lot of pressure to stop.
/Me2 - RPM blows and I can't see it getting better in a hurry. I've updated hundreds (thousands?) of packages with APT... completely pain-free. RPM fails me so often it's unspeakable. Compiling it yourself is often easier.
As a long-time Mainframer I am keen to hear exactly how well Linux performs on big iron. I've heard Linux under Hercules Under Linux performs OK in Intel hardware but I've heard nothing encouraging about Linux on the real thing. Any comments? Stats?
I don't know what it costs over there, but I suspect you can get a lot of cable laid for the price of the wireless access points. On the other hand, being able to drag a laptop outside while enjoying a coffee under a tree sounds rather pleasant. Perhaps there is a main central area that would benefit from wireless, while the rest could be cabled on request.
None of this addresses security concerns, but plenty of others have opinions there.
After September 11 our president told
us and the world he was going to root out all terrorists and the countries
that supported them
Arafat must surely be at the top of the list?

More like XXXX - they can't spell 'beer'!

How else can I help improve the gene pool?
Sponsored Research is fine - Sponsored Results is not. Me - I just wish I had the bandwidth to download a movie.

I knew you lot were lost in the dark ages and still used gallons, but I never would have guessed you couldn't spell "litre"!
It's not a right or (IMHO) a priviledge, but a responsibility.
You know it's true, you read it on Slashdot!

... you can be shut down with no notice, no recourse, and there's nothing you can do about it--
Just begging for a lawsuit, surely?
Surely nobody trusts M$ Passport enough to actually buy and sell using it!
...
Then again, force IS implied

Please excuse my ignorance, but is bitkeeper a requirement for kernel developers now?
Does everything kept under bitkeeper revert to a different licence?
If not, what is the problem? If it will make Linux better and doesn't impose on the open licencing I'm all for it.

Heads are rolling and arses being kicked, but I bet the tax payer has to dig yet deeper to pay for bailing out of the contract.
