I'm curious if you actually read my comment. My point was that scientists are no more or less compassionate or cruel than any other person. I am a scientist and I truly believe that there is a lot of beneficial as well as harmful research being done in the world.
As for religion starting war, that is nonsense. Religion is an excuse to start wars. I just chose to use religion as my excuse to be a better person. I honestly belive that people will do what is in their hearts whether they belive in god or not. What more people should try to do is think about their actions in terms of benefit to others.
Yes, many scientists do show compassion on a daily basis and this drives their research, I work with many of them every day. But look at the scientists who develop weapons, landmines, chemical warfare agents, do you not believe that they could show a little more compassion in their daily lives. Personally, my research deals with chemical warfare agent decontamination, so I have some idea of the lack of compassion some scientists show. The point which should have been made is that if nearly everyone could be just a little more compasionate, the world would be better off. If you think that most religions in the world are out to hurt people, you have missed the point.

How the hell did you get modded informative? Isn't slashdot supposedly populated with educated people? Or am I confusing education with the ability to recognize and appreciate a joke. Mod me down if you want, but the parent is obviously a joke.
My understanding of the way most open source and free software development, and the rest of life in most cases, is that the largest groups of users get their complaints fixed first. From this we can see that increasing the size of the user base for linux will create increased demand for fixing UI problems. I am just a linux user, not a developer, but as I understand it, linux is one of the most development friendly environments, which attracts more users, which creates incentive to fix developer issues, etc. By attracting gamers, we will also attract general users, increasing the potential to fix UI problems, as well as create better games. That is what good games on linux could possibly do, attract more users.
In regards to you comment on gaming on linux and returning to windows to do other things, the only reason I and many others keep a windows partition is for games. When good games come to linux, more users will migrate because they don't have to give up their favorite games.
My point is that these games could be the best ever of a given type. The linux community is constantly extolling the virtues of an incredibly large group of developers. The community as a whole should be able to get together and make some amazing games which would provide the incentive to try linux. Especially when the game is advertised as "Made by liux, for linux" and the windows version is just a port.
On the side issue of a knoppix game disk. What is the benefit of having people treat their PCs as a glorified console to play a game, then going back to windows for everything else?
Imagine if the open source comunity were able to develop a couple of really good games, say just an FPS and an RTS, then release both windows and linux versions. The catch being to charge for the windows version, while releasing the linux version for free. If the games are good enough and don't focus on the activities of penguins, this would be incentive for windows gamers to try linux and see the benefits. I know that the games would then not be considered "free", but the developers could still release the game engines under the GPL or whatever.
I upgraded Slack 9.1 from 2.4.? to 2.6.1 and it went very well. I would assume that with some of the simplifications made to the build process this time out, fewer people feel the need to comment because fewer problems arise.
I wouldn't trust my life to these. Just because they are planted in a mined area does not mean that they detect all the mines out there. In this case, the consequenses of a false negative result is devastating. Just because all the genetically modified flowers are one colour, don't go into the field.
This is an interesting technology but not something that I personally would rely on. The consequences of a few false negatives would be disasterous. Just because that field planted with mine detecting weeds is filled with flowers of only one colour doesn't mean that there are no mines out there.
Note the phrase, "either this drug or a better drug we have in development". That is the best way for any of the big drug companies to make money off of a discovery like this, by offering a better functioning alternative. Your point is valid that older drugs still function and are still available, but if there is a faster or more effective alternative, almost anyone will spend more to give their older relations the better drug.

By letting individuals and small groups take risks that NASA is unwilling or unable to take, progress can be expected much sooner. This isn't simply a matter of limiting the access of kids to violent games by not buying them. After you finish a game that you particularly enjoy, arn't you likely to lend that game to a friend who doesn't have access to the same resources (cash or permissive parents)? Hell, when I was a kid I would sell older games which had become boring to buy newer, more violent ones and my parents never knew. I'm not saying that parents can not stop their kids from playing violent games. Rather, I think that parents cannot rely on not buying violent games for their kids. As always it all comes down to parent's attention to what their children are doing.
