I think the more sane of those arguing against throttling are those who point to the ISPs' advertising, which is often at best misleading and at worst fraudulent.
Many fewer people were dependent on the Internet at that time. I think the point is that some people are starting to recognize where our society is heading.
Yeah, they didn't literally sugarcoat it. The submitter felt it necessary to hint that they are using wordplay, for those who might not otherwise catch it.
It's not your opinion if you state it as fact (i.e. "Hovering your hands over the keyboard and moving them as little as possible is exactly how you get CTS"). Besides, I wasn't even really replying to that part of your comment as you'll notice by what I quoted in mine. I was making a point that using the home row is perfectly possible and comfortable (using myself as anecdotal evidence) when one rests their wrists in front of the keyboard as you mentioned in your earlier comment.
How is that at all relevant to my comment that proper typing technique is valuable and does not lead to injury (at least for me)? According to Wikipedia the causes for CTS are less than obvious, although you pronounce to know "exactly how" one gets it from typing. Here's the word: quit being such a self-righteous and pretentious douche. kthxbai.
This is why kids don't get taught the "home row" method of typing anymore. Correct posture is to rest your wrist in front of the keyboard and reach for the keys. This is called, among over things, the "reach method".
I must be some kind of anomaly then because I rest my fingers on the home row as well as resting my wrists in front of the keyboard and reaching for the other keys. I am a programmer so obviously type quite a bit and I have never had RSI. I think proper typing is still valuable, you just need good hand posture as well.
You are overlooking one crucial point. To the average user, buying a song from iTunes is easier than finding a reliable p2p service, installing the software (and possibly configuring it properly), and searching for the songs they want which may have several versions and different availability. Simply put, it's possible to make the legal channels much easier and friendly to use.
MTV Networks has been giving benefits to life partners since long before homosexual marriage was briefly legalized, and they haven't stopped since it was overturned.
Nah, I happen to think that people in LA are better at driving on freeways than I have encountered other places. Seems logical since they get the most practice at it.
It's in reference to a Gentoo Stage1 install where the system is compiled mostly from scratch. It looks like it is only recommended for l337 developers now as that FAQ mentions that end-users shouldn't use it.
Where I went to school there weren't any IT staff that worked at the school, so tech savvy teachers and students—like myself—handled most of the issues. There was district level IT that took care of some infrastructure, but they were far too understaffed to do the types of things we were doing.
Here's a thought, library books! Instead of wasting our money making sure every bumpkin has a boob tube, we should be investing a fraction of that money into ensuring accessible and abundant libraries.
but why the keenness to make sure the user's players were up to date?... I am guessing that the update is DRM updates
While I agree with you that it is most likely what you said, you did not mention the possibility that it is just plain old bug fixes for serious problems in the firmware that would cause the user to be unhappy with their purchase. Hey, it's possible.
if a law enforcement official asked someone to stop taking pictures, detained the person or asked them to delete the photos of public transportation I'd be happier than if they just sat idly by out of fear of stepping all over their precious dignity
We can't have people running around with liberty and dignity—that's just too dangerous to "the safety of the masses." I hope not, but am afraid that too many people are starting to think like you. You posture yourselves in fear and hope the government will protect you, rather than resolutely supporting the Rule of Law even when bad things happen.
I haven't seen even one person throw out the idea that perhaps those in the Middle East that would prefer to return to the Stone Age would have any interest in cutting off access to the Internet...
The first thing I did after receiving my RFID-embedded passport was to pick up one of these.

You mean you had mod points. You've now participated in the conversation.

I'd be embarrassed too if I was trying to extort children and grandmothers.
This is not to be confused with COPPA, which is also a 1998 law protecting children online that exists and is enforced.

If you provide customer-friendly channels for obtaining music legally online, your sales will increase. Quit yer bellyachin' already.
You hit the nail on the head for the difference-making margin. I can't believe more people aren't talking about this.

You're right, a +5 Informative post that included just the URL to the comic would have sufficed because xkcd is obligatory knowledge for true nerds.

No. Like DRM, they will just keep thinking up more obtrusive ways to prevent exploits rather than scrapping a fundamentally flawed idea.

most of what I listen to is about to lose its protected status soon
Not if Disney has anything to say about it. ;)
Minority Report. Serves the double purpose of marketing to individual preferences, and also keeping track of the populace.
