I completely disagree with you comparitive to Real, Quicktime and Winamp, Windows Media player is far better in interface and playback of all video formats they play.

You are correct I did not take the SAT and no I am no longer in highschool thank you. the reason I didn't take my SAT score had to do with the fact I wasn't goign to get into college on a Scholarship White/Male/Working Class had a little to do with that the rest had to do with my apathy for doing homework. having a 3.4 GPA based soley on taking tests really doesn't help you get into colleges now. Although I did take a PSAT since that was required. I got a 1480 I believe maybe it was a 1482 or 84 not sure but I got a perfect on my math I didn't do as well as hoped on my English but such is life.

I hate to bring this up but you ever see a Grownup learn somethign as fast as a Child. Some people who work on computers are absolutly terrified of messign things up. I have had many people ask me what to do when they are prompted by a software installation or get a warning message from a program.
Children do have an advantage they don't think they can harm anything. Adults who have experienced bad software and constant problems however do know they can mess things up. So a lot fo them ae afraid to learn from their mistakes and would rather be told what to do.
I support a group of people who constantly complain to me about simple things they can do themselves and no matter how often I show them how to fix it or do it themselves or show them what caused the problem(which is usually a normal behavior) they still call me to fix it. So the prospect of working with a miriad of Linux distribution and all the extremely buggy software that runs on Linux is not somethign I look forward too.
I think the Open Source Community really does need to stop Fragmenting the desktop and end user applications environment. Maybe sit down with the major players have one big conference on what to hash out make some proposals and maybe in a year or two come out with a unified platform Desktop. Then MS might have a real Competitor in the desktop market.
OK let me start off by Saying I am a linux Newb. Not to say I haven't worked with it before but I generally haven't done much with it. My first Experience with Linux was in 1997. I installed a Distro of Linux I believe it was Redhat. I found the experience of installing rather annoying and the Driver support was Ghastly. I used it for a week and then formated and reinstalled Windows NT 4.0. So I statyed away from Linux for a long time. I have ran Windows, Solaris, and Free BSD since then. Now I am a System Administrator for a Company. I am the only System Administrator and i have inherited 8 servers running Linux.
So here I am trying Linux again. I have 3 different Versions of Redhat over these 8 machines. Now I am a big Fdan of Windows 2000 for all its Security holes and other problems its integration is very simple and easy to use a nice strong Firewall and Antivirus software running at a server level makes my job pretty easy. Most of my Users are power Users (those of you who do not understand this it means unlike most companies I do not give my uzsers root level access). This works well for me my exposure to Viruses is pretty minimal. I update based on severity of problems when necessary but I can generally keep my systems clean with 1 hour a week of Updating the servers.
Now to me the proposition of Running Linux Desktops is too Daunting for me to even Concieve of. Why because I have a lot of Marketing people at this company everyone has there own ideas how they want things to work and what they want to use. Giving these computer users(slightly above primate intelligence when it comes to computers) does not sound like a very nice experience for me. I just convinced them all to stop using Gator. I spend about 2 hours a day explaining very simple things to these people and these really does cut into my time when I have things I need to get done. So giving them an operating System like Linux would be the death of me. If ther was one Distribution one Desktop environment and one set platform I might actually consider it. Servers well thats entirly different make as many Distros as you want Only Professional IT people shoudl be using these anyway I am currently experimenting with replacing our Redhat Servers with Debian or Mandrake.
Now to me Suns Mad Hatter is interesting to me. Although My experiences with Java have not been pleasesnt I will give Sun teh benefit of the doubt they Created java they probably will be very proficient in programming with it. But this is a system with a company backign it up. Why does this please me.
There is the aperence of a reponsible company behind it easier to sell to the Executives
They are offering an entire platform this gives me as a devloper an interface I can develop for(yes I know GNOME and KDE I can develope for but Personally I would rather have one ring to rule them all)
This Gives me a One stop place for an extensive Knowledge base that will be present

Although My experiences with Java have not been pleasesnt I will give Sun teh benefit of the doubt they Created java they probably will be very proficient in programming with it. But this is a system with a company backign it up. Why does this please me.

OK I have to say this. Protecting a file format is one thing. if this was not allowed Real Co. wouldn't exist today since there Media player absolutly sucks. However there are other alternatives. Hell streaming video itself has a patent on it. Patents like this no matter who holds them are total B.S. think about it. Why does IBM, Sun, MS, and Oracle all are filing patents like crazy. To protect themselves from these idiots like Eolas. Despite what people say about MS they have kept things very open on things they have inovated. And yes MS has made some inovations or purchased them. The clear loser in this is the consumer.
Think about it Eolas holds patents on common processes. it like pateneting dark skin and then puting caucasions in a warm climate as they evolve and get darker you start charging them. it total B.S. Prior art existed hence patent should not be enforceable. regardless this patent is way to broad.
Most patents in the software industry are overly broad. Protecting an a specific encryption of file format there is nothing wrong with that.
What humors me most is how Eolas expects everyone to support them since they are sticking it to MS. However, What cost does this represent to the rest of us? this is setting one hell of a horrible precedent. This is worse then Adobe suing Jasc abotu their interface. Which again was total crap. Either way the only people who lose in this is us the consumer.
If this guy thinks that because of what he is doing he will level the playing field with browsers as he has stated. I say screw that. I am goign to uninstall all the browsers I use except for IE I will go whatever way they take me. Why because I will support those that are being oppressed and in this case their is no doubt that the world would be a better place if Eolas never existed.

If SCO wins against IBM and they certainly could. They will go after Microsoft next. Although I think Microsoft will either buy them out or pay them off. The Really scary thing you have to think about is if SCO does win and Microsoft buys SCO what will happen?
If ford made the cars and Pioneer had an exclusive liscence to engineer to Ford Cars and improve on them. Then in terms they were not allowed to use the same engineering design to enhance Chrystler cars is stated in the agreement the design modification although owned by Pioneer are essentually exclusive to Ford. Now lets say Chrystler buys Pioneer, then applies thattechnology to their own brand of cars. They have just Violated teh Agreement with Ford and are now subject to Lawsuit. Its really Very simple if this is the Case SCO is right IBM did violate a liscence agreement. Is it immoral Sure as hell is but then again. You make somethign that costs 699 a liscence and someone else comes around makes a near identical product and charges nothign for it you would be pissed as well.

The Guy invents nothing he patents ideas. You really should look here and check out wht this guy has patented image mapping, cryptography over the web. But one thing you shoudl really notice is that lack of ANY products He makes nothign but patents Scum like this should be shot and dragged through the streets. I mean please if this guy had even had a product and had some source code to support his claims I could maybe understand his position. but the comapny has nothing.

I Have to Toally Agree with your post this patent is utter crap If you read the patent here It basically states any Object viewed in a browser thats a very broad spectrum.

This company now has Leverage so now any company that makes a browser and does not pay them will then be liable. So Opera, Apple and any other company out there making a browser that has any kind of Money will be a target if they haven't bought a licsence to use there patent. how many people here have taken a scantron examination. and when given said instruction are told to completely fill in the box and only mark the box when you are absolutly sure because and erasings might cause the system to give you an incorrect mark.
